lakpan··on Microsoft Edge ignores user wishes, slurps tabs from Chrome without permission
Things that did not happen.
lakpan··on Ask HN: How can I back up an old vBulletin forum without admin access?
Sometimes people just don’t care.

I moved on, please don’t bother me about it and let the website live or die.

That’s about the answer I got the last time one of my favorite websites was due to be deleted.

lakpan··on Ask HN: How can I back up an old vBulletin forum without admin access?
Did they block the IP?
lakpan··on Modern CSS One-Line Upgrades
Thank god. Most if not all “smooth scrolling” suck on devices that already offer smooth scrolling natively. I tried contributing solution back but they just didn’t care.
lakpan··on Android now lets you transfer eSIMs between your phones
See you in 2035

Unfortunately we have to suffer for a long time before regulation follows, if ever.

Then regulation follows and we get cookie banners sometimes.

lakpan··on Android now lets you transfer eSIMs between your phones
From the article:

> Although carrier support is still limited,

Nope. eSIM is crap on android too.

lakpan··on How to Control JavaScript's Strict Mode
That seems weird to me. Does strict mode affect parsing?

I thought that parsing completed before execution, so why couldn’t the parser generate the same AST for these two functions?

(a) => a === undefined ? 1 : a

(a = 1) => a

lakpan··on Show HN: Start every terminal session with a vivid reminder of life's value
Ah yes, I’d love to start the day reading a fresh “Numbers 31:17” verse. For pair programming I’d just stick to “Leviticus 18:22”
lakpan··on Git Branches Have No Rules
To be honest, describing a branch the wrong way is only going to confuse people more.

The “dots on the line” visualization is pretty clear: you can have any number of branches pointing to a specific dot/commit. How do you add “branches” without fundamentally breaking that concept? When you create a branch, you’re not copying the line, you’re just adding a pointer.

lakpan··on Git Branches Have No Rules
What? If you’re looking for “the most natural” then you’ll find it in the name. You can’t “explain” branch by using a synonym.

Plus that definition describes both tags and branches, how do you tell them apart? It’s clearly lacking. Actually that definition fits commits too.

I’d rather use these:

Branch: a pointer that advances

Tag: a permanent pointer

Commit/hash: an even more permanent pointer (because even a force can’t change it) that also describes the changes.

lakpan··on Git Branches Have No Rules
That’s not right. A branch is a single pointer to a single commit. Just open your .git folder. It’s then Git itself that follows that commit’s pointer to its parent(s).

The branch, like the tag, is a single reference to a commit.

Do this:

    $ cat .git/refs/heads/main
lakpan··on iOS Wi-Fi Profile Generator
Yes but for what? Why should I install a profile instead of just scanning a QR?
lakpan··on Quairading shire erects signs telling travellers to ignore Google Maps
Then Google Maps becomes unavailable in your country and I want to see how long it takes for that to be reinstated with a “Sorry oh Google”
lakpan··on Quairading shire erects signs telling travellers to ignore Google Maps
Grab (the South East Asian Uber) lets you place the pin.

I did just that when I grew tired of delivery drivers entering the wrong gate because the address’ pin was closer to the other side of my corner.

lakpan··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
Maybe my comment is out of date, but the patterns around Prime caused the FTC to sue Amazon just last summer:

https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/amazon-rosca-pu...

lakpan··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
The Prime unsubscribe flow is a master class of darkness.

Try it. It takes several clicks, multiple word-heavy pages, hard choices, flat-out lies, and in the end maybe you just accepted to be reminded 60 seconds before the renewal date.

lakpan··on T-Mobile introduce fines from Jan 1 for "Code of Conduct" violations
It’s always “funny” to me when I see private companies and establishments trying to “fine” their customers.

I refuse to pay, what are you going to do? Would this ever hold in court?

lakpan··on She Gave a Hotel a Mediocre Review. Then Came the Badgering
Yes totally, I do mention things I don’t like in reviews, but “great stay, but no coffee maker (****)” seems excessive.
lakpan··on Qatar Airways Bans YouTuber for Negative Review
QA vouchers are a scam.

First of all they don’t give them to you immediately, so if you just want to cancel a flight and book another, tough luck. Wait or lose it.

Second they promise an additional percentage if you get the voucher instead of the refund (this was started in Covid so people would not request a monetary refund). Then you go use the voucher and lo and behold: the voucher was not for 100% of the fare, “some fees are unrefundable”, and that extra percentage just about restores the fare to the original price you spent.

So it’s nice that they offer the voucher, but why lie about any extras? This bit me in the ass when instead of requesting a “full refund within 24 hours” I just requested the voucher instead, locking me into Qatar unnecessarily.

lakpan··on Volkswagen Will Bring Back Physical Buttons in New Cars
> outdated in two years.

More like already out of date. There’s no chance that any system that doesn’t play Spotify is a match with my phone. Or any navigation that isn’t based off Google Maps. And so on.

If I have to connect my phone, they already lost.

lakpan··on She Gave a Hotel a Mediocre Review. Then Came the Badgering
That’s just wrong. Plenty of useful information in reviews, even when most of them are gamed. Bad reviews are always useful so you should leave them, especially if they exist to counter the good fake ones.
lakpan··on She Gave a Hotel a Mediocre Review. Then Came the Badgering
I mean… they’re not 100% wrong.
lakpan··on She Gave a Hotel a Mediocre Review. Then Came the Badgering
I don’t trust the positive ones but their content is useful. Sometimes I want to know the entrance price or if anyone complained about something.

Most people don’t know reviews are largely gamed, so that’s why people believe them.

lakpan··on Show HN: NowDo – MacOS todo app for procrastinators
Pretty sure that exists already. I’ve been using this in a similar way: https://sindresorhus.com/one-thing
lakpan··on Windows Protected Print Mode
I wish I knew anything about printing, but why can’t my computer just send a PDF to the printer and have it deal with the details itself? I don’t quite understand the need for the computer to have to get into the nitty gritty other than just sending the source and a JSON. Printers nowadays can handle the printing autonomously (obviously, since they can print via WiFi/bluetooth/pendrive since 2005)
lakpan··on An Empirical Study and Evaluation of Modern CAPTCHAs
This is exactly what I was referring to. “Minimal compliance” and unmaintained websites.
lakpan··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
eSIM is a failed technology. Instead of making it easier to move, they just gave the operators more control. In some cases, transfers are simply not possible (like with most eSIMs on Airalo)
lakpan··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
Sometimes you don’t have a choice. Sometimes even if have that set up, the service will still send an SMS.
lakpan··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
That’s what I said, and I think it’s opt-in. GA is just one of many who silently opt out of iCloud.

> you must enable sync to your account

lakpan··on An Empirical Study and Evaluation of Modern CAPTCHAs
That’s excessively optimistic. The most likely scenario is that we’ll have captchas for the next 30 years but only humans will be bothered by them.
