lai-yin··on Live feed of Starship SN15 flight test [video]
Is it just a state of mind? I've been perfectly happy and even proud to do menial work on nights and weekends when it was for a cool cause.
lai-yin··on The Unlikely Success of Fish Sticks
That fish sticks episode of South Park is so good. Can't wait to watch it with my grandkids and admire the puzzlement in their faces.
lai-yin··on Lambda School agrees to end deceptive educational financing practices
I was a student at Trilogy. Not sure what they mean. The course was fun. The good students leveled up in their careers. I certainly did.
lai-yin··on Gravity batteries try to beat chemical ones with winches, weights, mine shafts
Sorry but you don't get to discount wind turbines' ecological damage just because no more mining is involved post-construction.
lai-yin··on Gravity batteries try to beat chemical ones with winches, weights, mine shafts
Land AND resource use. Just because a single wind turbine takes up a small patch of land doesn't mean it's not extremely resource intensive. Case in point: https://twitter.com/extrachelle/status/986599367049179136?s=...
lai-yin··on Nassim Taleb: Bitcoin failed as a currency and became a speculative ponzi scheme
Yes, you need to read millions of tweets. Have a nice weekend.
lai-yin··on Nassim Taleb: Bitcoin failed as a currency and became a speculative ponzi scheme
Taleb dumped bitcoin because he couldn't stand seeing its community almost unanimously oppose the COVID lockdowns, while he was taking his precautionary principle to the extreme. You could see the divergence playing out on Twitter for months before Taleb actually came out against bitcoin. The only fact that changed about bitcoin during that time period was new all time highs and institutional adoption.
lai-yin··on Neurons might contain something within them
I thought I hit rock bottom, but then I realized there were more rock bottoms beneath the rock bottom. It's rock bottoms all the way down.
lai-yin··on SpaceX wins contract to develop spacecraft to land astronauts on the moon
I've heard Bezos' approach with Blue Origin compared to the 'tortoise and the hare' allegory. Slow and steady may work when your talented opponent is taking naps along the racetrack, it doesn't work when they are as driven as the SpaceX team.
lai-yin··on The case for trailer parks
Every alternative to suburbs has its own serious problems.

People like living in suburbs. I like living in them. And maybe if we rebrand trailer parks as tiny home communities it will change attitudes about cheap, affordable homes.

lai-yin··on U.S. Supreme Court rebuffs Facebook appeal in user tracking lawsuit
This article's webpage displayed a few rug ads. I was shopping for rugs a month ago. The rug ads haven't stopped since. I don't care though tbh.
lai-yin··on Young Goldman Sachs bankers ask for 80-hour week cap
I majored in Finance over 10 years ago and this was common knowledge then. A recruiter even warned us about it. Graduates still applied for the program. It's just bankers larping as Navy SEALs in BUD/S training.
lai-yin··on Magic Mushrooms Are Decriminalized in DC as of Today
America is worse off after months of BLM protests. So you could argue that being broke, woke, and violent can make a difference.
lai-yin··on Bitcoin Is Dead – Tracking all notable Bitcoin skeptics since 2010
I'm not seeing many bitcoin defenders here. Maybe it's because they're celebrating 61k.
lai-yin··on So You Want to Abolish Time Zones (2015)
Wow! Never mind!
lai-yin··on So You Want to Abolish Time Zones (2015)
Couldn't we just strategically position some gargantuan mirrors in outer space so that the entire planet is always sunlit?

lai-yin··on Every $1 of BTC value responsible for $0.49 in health and climate damages in US
Great now do the U.S. dollar
lai-yin··on 75 Years Ago, 'War of the Worlds' Started a Panic. Or Did It? (2013)
The Slate article suggests that Radiolab sensationalized the Orson Welles version. Quite the opposite. Jad & Co told the shocking truth - that the whole event was not that eventful. Then they got into the tragic story of the Ecuadorian radio station that tried the same experiment in storytelling.

lai-yin··on Raiders of the Lost Ark as a Black-and-White Silent Film (2014)
I know this is an easy downvote and foolish statement, but I find very few pre-90s blockbuster movies to be watchable. Spielberg's movies hold up well though. There are a few others, like When Harry Met Sally, that I also still love.
lai-yin··on Nearly half of Texas wind turbines are frozen
And TX wind power projections are dropping to 500MW out of 24,000 MW wind system. http://www.ercot.com/content/cdr/html/CURRENT_DAYCOP_HSL.htm...
lai-yin··on Bitcoin's fundamental value is negative given its environmental impact
That's an absurd argument. And as long as we're using solar and wind, we'll need backup from coal, gas and nuclear for when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing. If you think increasing battery capacity will solve that, read up on the supply chain of lithium.
lai-yin··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
Interesting stats in that citation. Hydropower dominates in the renewables category and North America has the highest regional share of renewables powered mining.
lai-yin··on Robert Caro and Kurt Vonnegut interview each other (1999)
Caro's anecdote about how he persuaded Lyndon's brother to open up, in the re-creation of their childhood home, has stuck with me for years and almost feels like a parable.
lai-yin··on Time-lapse of a single cell transforming into a salamander (2019)
Worth the six minutes. Life begins at the first cell.
lai-yin··on We Crush, Poison, and Destroy Insects at Our Own Peril
Wind turbine blades in many parts of the world are regularly coated in insect biomass.
lai-yin··on The Supply Chain for Lithium (2020)
The carbon maths referenced by other hn users were very interesting, but they didn't debunk anything in the article. What specifically about the article did you find misleading? I thought it was an interesting and comprehensive introduction to the challenges and opportunities in the lithium supply chain.

I would also enjoy alternative resources that aren't produced by think tanks. But it seems unfair to denigrate think tanks out of hand.

lai-yin··on Tether price manipulation
Anyone know the source of Jacob's chart in part 5 of his thread?
lai-yin··on [dead]
wtf is dang
lai-yin··on Bitcoin Hits New High, but Cryptocurrency's Future Is Uncertain
It's a meme among bitcoin advocates to troll suckers like you. We see plenty of value in bitcoin. Enough to save the world from fiat.
