lagniappe··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
Really? What's the punchline? I like jokes.
lagniappe··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
This wont change anything it will just make it less evident to those who missed a day of checking HN.
lagniappe··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
It's called context taint.
lagniappe··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
This suffers from a common pitfall of LLM's, context taint. You can see it is obviously the front page from today with slight "future" variation, the result ends up being very formulaic.
lagniappe··on Strong earthquake hits northern Japan, tsunami warning issued
Somewhat offtopic curiosity: Is there anything that Japanese fishkeepers do to keep the water and livestock inside the tank during earthquakes? Here we have no such risk for earthquakes, so a 600lb tank of water 4ft off the ground isn't much of an issue, even when bumped. I'd imagine earthquakes of this frequency could complicate that.
lagniappe··on PatchworkOS: An OS for x86_64, built from scratch in C and assembly
I wonder sometimes why we stopped at Unix, as if we all just happily said "..There!" and plopped ourselves down as if the work was done. Plan9 was our future and we let it rot unseen- a thriller with the last chapter removed.

Much obliged. Have a good weekend. Your new gray hairs are en route :)

Models are trained with content scraped from the net, for the most part. The availability of content pertaining to those specs is almost nil, and of no SEO value. Ergo, models for the most part will only have a cursory knowledge of a spec that your browser will never be able to parse because that isn't the spec that won.

Nonetheless, here is a link to a list of the specs you asked for: https://www.w3.org/Style/History/Overview.en.html

lagniappe··on What the heck is going on at Apple?
A tweet I saw earlier:

    Mark Gurman @markgurman

BREAKING: Apple’s chip chief Johny Srouji informed CEO Tim Cook he is seriously considering leaving the company and would likely continue his career elsewhere rather than retire. Apple is urgently pushing to keep him. He remains at least for now.

We actually had a myriad of competing specs. CSS proper wasn't released until december 1996.
lagniappe··on Perl's decline was cultural
Nobody will agree with this hot take, but I was around in the perl years, so maybe take this opinion with a grain of salt:

Perl wasn't arcane on purpose, the bar for being a programmer was just that much higher, born through necessity as we didn't have as much material to easily turn someone into a capable engineer, so to make anything work you had to -really- be motivated to learn, and that extended to the entire skill tree of things that happen before learning to code, like simply navigating the machine and being able to reach the realization that you needed to write something on your own.

Perl evolved to suit the needs of those that used it at the time, and it reflected their interests, skills, and abilities.

These days everything is so abstracted, so available, so easy, all of the material to learn literally anything is free and at your fingertips, programmers don't need to be that knowledgeable to identify a need and generate some code that mostly addresses that need.

lagniappe··on OpenAI disables ChatGPT app suggestions that looked like ads
If they think they're anywhere close to being far enough "in the lead" to force ads on paying customers, they're mistaken.

Also, stop with the "wE FeLlL ShOrT", corporate platitudes mean nothing in 2025. We know you don't feel that way, you know you don't feel that way, cut the bs.

That only works on reddit, this is aiming to be a place for insightful comments and fruitful discussion

lagniappe··on Amazon faces FAA probe after delivery drone snaps internet cable in Texas
Just as the delivery vans participate with local police through FLOC, so will the drones, soon. Remember, if it can be seen from a public vantage point, it's not private, including what can be seen through windows and behind fences.
lagniappe··on The Nerd Reich – Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy
I'd prefer you focus your attention elsewhere
lagniappe··on AGI is not possible even in 10 years
When you see these claims it's important to frame the assertion contextually as in the transformer generation, AGI is 10+ years away. This does not, however, account for the next architecture that will do more with less.
lagniappe··on The Nerd Reich – Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy
Your brain doesn't live in isolation, your body and the fitness of it are crucial to fueling that brain.
lagniappe··on APT Rust requirement raises questions
And for each of those names there are 100 rust zealots tainting their legacy with their behavior.
lagniappe··on The Nerd Reich – Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy
Are you new? PHP was the standard for that type of app at the time.
lagniappe··on The Nerd Reich – Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy
>his attempts to bulk up and become a MMA competitor notwithstanding

a lot of us nerds value physical strength, it's 2025, we're not mouthbreathers anymore.

lagniappe··on APT Rust requirement raises questions
Ah yes, the signature snark from the Rust community. This is the type of thing that repels people.
lagniappe··on APT Rust requirement raises questions
The endless crusades are indeed tiresome.
lagniappe··on I built a faster Notion in Rust
what's the punchline? I like jokes
lagniappe··on I built a faster Notion in Rust
Automated or not, editing titles is not cool. What an odd double standard.
lagniappe··on I built a faster Notion in Rust
'an' precedes a vowel sound, 'a' precedes a consonant sound.
lagniappe··on Raccoons are showing early signs of domestication
You should work on that.
lagniappe··on Laptops with Stickers
Your sex life shouldn't be intertwined with your work life.
lagniappe··on Widespread distribution of bacteria containing PETases across global oceans
Can somebody do the napkin math on an estimate for how long for us to get plasticized hair and nails and teeth?
lagniappe··on Trying two dozen different psychedelics
You wont encounter that type of change with mushrooms at a conventional dose. Normally when people talk about the change in neural structures etc, this comes from higher order psychedelics, or sometimes lower order psychedelics at heroic dosages. Think of it like electroshock therapy in the sense that enduring this large eustress, change is made.
