l72··on Blacksky grew to millions of users without spending a dollar
Allowing every drive by commentator is a huge mistake in building an actual community. Communities are built by people invested in the platform.

In the early to mid aughts I was part of couch surfing. It had a lot of purpose built in friction and it created an amazing tight knit group of people that I still consider my best friends. Once the pressure from Airbnb and investment money caused them to remove that, it became terrible.

Sometime never growing a community over a small group of invested people is the right choice.

The same thing happened with NextDoor. When it was small and just involved a few hundred people in your immediate neighborhood there was a real community on there. Then the kept expanding the size and now you have people that live no where in your community ruining the experience for everyone.

This is why I miss RSS so much. It is such a great way to keep up with people over a wide variety of platforms with your own powerful user agent.

I still use a self hosted FreshRSS heavily and fortunately many sites still accidentally support it, but it could be so much easier for non tech people.

This is where tech family and friends need to play a role. Host these services for them!

My family just thinks Jellyfin and Navidrome is another Netflix or Spotify they have access to. And most of them prefer Jellyfin as content doesn’t disappear and is much more curated.

Until you kids school uses it for organizing information for parents or that’s the only place a niche group you like is.

Getting banned from Facebook means loosing access to all of that. Kinda like getting banned from YouTube could mean loss of access to email, groups, drive and a bunch of other services. Hell I’ve heard of company contractors getting banned from Google Play’s Developer and everyone in the company then getting banned from all Google services!

If I get banned from a Lemmy community that doesn’t ban me from other communities or other servers and I can always run my own if I need to.

l72··on Blacksky grew to millions of users without spending a dollar
But it can also be specialized forums like https://startrek.website/ which is hosted using Lemmy but you can use your federated login. It can help bring back indie forums and websites that aren’t controlled by Reddit or meta.
l72··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
I really wish we had laws that producers of content cannot also be distributors. That just creates perverse incentives to use content to lock people into their distribution platform.

If they had to be separate, that gives content producers the ability to cross license and those licenses to be better deals. We’d actually have competition in distribution companies as distribution providers would then be competing on price, quality, convenience, and other things that matter, not locking content away.

You have to have real options or people can’t make informed decisions.

I have a background in city planning, and in the US, you’ll constantly hear about how trying to make cities more friendly to pedestrians, bicycles, or public transit is a waste because no one uses it. But the truth is, most people will end up using the system you design. If you build a system just for cars, people will use cars. If you build a city around public transportation, people will happily use it. If you build a walkable city, people will walk.

l72··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
They also often time have versions of old movies and shows that have been modified due to silly things like license agreements on music expiring! I have felt gaslighted when I rewatch and old movie and some scene isn’t how I remember.
l72··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
If they were willing to sell movies and tv shows WITHOUT DRM, I’d happily buy what I want and put on my Jellyfin server. I don’t pirate music because I can buy what I want on Bandcamp (and even mainstream music on apple and Amazon without drm).

But since I can’t (and you can’t even find physical media for a lot of things), I feel like I am left with no options.

I am not even trying to get stuff that is recent, as I prefer to wait, especially for tv shows, to finish its run before I decide if it is worth investing my time in.

I mostly go to the library every week and pick up movies and tv shows on Blu-ray and rip them so I can watch them on my schedule. I often delete them afterwards if I feel like they don’t have replay value.

I think Jellyfin also provides a much better interface than any of the streaming apps, and I like to be able to know if I am going to watch them on my theatrical version or some extended version.

l72··on Mwm – The smallest usable X11 window manager
Terrible window management is a huge reason I will not use Mac OS or Windows. I immediately lose so much productivity. I am coming up on my 30th year of using Linux, and I can't imagine moving to an OS with such limited window capabilities. No sloppy mouse focus? No always on top? No sticky windows? No marking windows as utility windows to skip alt-tab?

I watch my colleagues on Mac OS and Windows during peer programming, and am flabbergasted as they fumble around trying to find the right window.

I am interacting with my computers interface for 10+ hours every single day. I do not stare at a single application, but am constantly jumping between windows and tasks. The one size fits all approach is the same as the lowest common denominator approach, and it hinders people who need to do real work.

l72··on How to Firefox
I mostly agree, and I personally just use containers (and heavily!) However, that has not been the case for my spouse. Profiles are important to her in two scenarios:

1. The primary website she uses for grad school (canvas) REQUIRES third party cookies to be enabled for it to work. Containers cannot have different settings here, but profiles can. So she can have a School profile that enables 3rd party cookies and she just uses this profile for Canvas.

2. She likes to keep ALL of her work stuff separate and not have that sync to her personal mobile. So she has Personal Profile (with containers) and a Work Profile (also with containers). The two profiles are themed differently, so it makes it very clear if she is in her "work" browser or "personal" browser.

Firefox's profile management has been a struggle for her (I found creating different application icons for each profile worked best), and I am very excited about the new profile manager!

l72··on The .a file is a relic: Why static archives were a bad idea all along
I think from a security point of view, if a program is linked to its library dynamically, a malicious actor could replace the original library without the user noticing, by just setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the malicious library. That wouldn't be possible with a program that is statically linked.
l72··on Framework Laptop 12 review
I had a usb dock that surged, destroying the dock and my touchpad. A $25 replacement from framework, and under 5 minutes to swap things out, and I was good as new!
l72··on Jokes and Humour in the Public Android API
I think it depends on if you lean more towards fantasy or sci-fi.

Star Wars is space fantasy. Star Trek is science fiction.

I’m not saying one is better than the other, but they appeal to different personalities.

I personally struggle to get in to fantasy, whether that is Star Wars, DnD, or fantasy video games. I’d much prefer to have a court room debate about ethics in the future.

The Star Wars vs Star Trek debate has always confused me as you are comparing two totally different genres.

l72··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
I think for exploring new music last.fm or listenbrainz are still good options.

Listenbrainz has some cool tools like troi to come up with weekly lists.

They work on popularity and neighbors, so if you listen to a lot of underground music that isn’t on major platforms, they fail

l72··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
I buy a lot of music on Bandcamp and often a label will have their whole catalog on sale, so I’ll just buy that. But I haven’t been good exploring the new 50+ albums I just bought, so this is helping.

I also finally took my wife’s collection, properly tagged it, and added it to my collection. That has been fun to explore.

l72··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
I am working on a music recommendation algorithm for your self hosted music. Think of it like your personal pandora.

Backend is already working: Boldaric https://github.com/line72/boldaric

And a simple iOS native front end (which I haven’t submitted to the App Store yet). Tor Jolan https://github.com/line72/torjolan

It has been interesting tweaking the algorithms and models for various similarity searches.

I really like that it focuses on music characteristics and not metadata, so popularity of a song/artist isn’t even taken into account. This has really helped me explore my rather large music collection especially when I get stuck in a rut of listening to the same things.

l72··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
I use a lot of email+site@example.com. It would be great if those were included too!
l72··on Netflix will show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026
Cancelled! That was the last streaming service I had. I guess in 2 weeks when it goes dark, I’ll see how long it takes before the family notices.

Anyway my Jellyfin instance is growing every week. Used dvd/blu rays + my library’s great movie selection has been worth the effort.

If there was a Bandcamp but for tv/movies, I’d happily buy from there instead of ripping DVDs!

l72··on US vs. Google amicus curiae brief of Y Combinator in support of plaintiffs [pdf]
The search part of Google doesn’t bother me. I have other options and I now reach for an llm first, then fall back to ddg. What I do think needs to be separated are: 1) Ads and analytics 2) Chrome 3) Google Play Services.

Googles ad platform and analytics are difficult to avoid. Even with browser extensions, dns blocking, and aggressive firewall rules, this is virtually impossible to avoid. I am shocked at how many websites and apps break when these are blocked. There needs to be a much healthier ecosystem without a single company gobbling all this up.

Chrome is also a big issue. Google has regularly used its web sites and android to heavily push chrome. They also use that influence for web “standards” that are not really standards. On top of it, even googles own sites are often terrible with non chrome based browsers. We need a variety of user agents and we need real standards that a truly independent body has a say in. The web has matured and we don’t need to be in a race for new apis and features right now.

Google play services are also a huge pain point. When developing for Android, you almost have to use them. Running Android without Google Play services or with an alternate is a futile effort if you want any sort of main stream app. My degoogled work phone is mostly useless for anything. We definitely need standards for these services with replaceable components that are transparent to the apps.

l72··on ACE-Step: A step towards music generation foundation model
I want to play something on my keyboard (the only instrument I am slightly ok at) and then be able to tell it to play it with a saxophone and describe exactly how I want it played. I don’t need an AI to create a song for me, I need 100 session musicians at my disposal to create the song I want. I am very excited about having that type of ai.
l72··on mIRC 7.81
I always thought slashdot had an interesting concept with meta moderators. Their job was to look at how someone moderated a comment and verify if it was moderated correctly. If it was that moderator was giving more moderation points (how many times they could up/down vote something). If it wasn’t they lost points.

You would be randomly asked to meta moderate random moderations.

l72··on AMP and why emails are not (and should never be) interactive
I would happily go into my bank or medical provider and upload my pgp public key for them to encrypt emails with…

Email is an incredibly important communication database and I expect my important communications to be there and be searchable.

> I really miss Napster letting you browse people's music when you found someone who was also into things you liked - pure gold mine only second to a LAN party where you could dig through the file server.

If you are a bandcamp user, find people with similar purchases to you and follow them. It is a good way to browse for new albums based on people with similar tastes.

l72··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
I am a heavy user of bandcamp, but I find their notifications...lacking. I ended up taking their emails, categorizing them, and putting them in RSS [1]. This has cleaned up my notifications and makes it much easier to follow artists and to easily separate new releases vs news/merch/...

Also, I find bandcamp's wishlist manager to be severely lacking. I use the wishlist as a queue of things I need to check out or have already checked out (and may not have liked). But, it isn't really meant for having 1000s of albums in there.

So, I wrote a wishlist manager [2][3], which lets you organize, comment, rate, and listen to your wishlist.

I spend a quite a bit on bandcamp, especially since many of the bands I listen to are only available on bandcamp (no streaming services!). While I am glad it hasn't been enshittified by the acquisitions, I do think there could be a few small UX improvements.

I give all my services a proper subdomain so SSL works. But I keep all my services internal and run a pi.hole with DNS for my local services. (I use wireguard to vpn into my network to access everything).

If internet goes out, DNS to my local services still works fine since it is being served directly from my pi.hole.

l72··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
This is a major issue for me for both video and music streaming platforms.

Do you know what version of the Abyss you are going to get? Is it that theatrical version that cut out a major plot point or the director's cut that includes it? What about Blade Runner? Do you want the original theatrical version or the super duper pointless extended Director's Cut? You don't get a choice with streaming, and you often don't even know what version it'll be.

I find this is even worse with music. Take the Beatles. Their songs have been remastered many times. Some of the remasters are good, and some of them ruin the music for me. But what version are you going to get? And, you may be listening to a good version today, but due to label negotiations, have it swapped out with a different version tomorrow.

I take a lot of pride in curating my personal media collection. I know these issues aren't important to everyone (and some people who might care are just unaware), but they are incredibly important to me.

l72··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
I also now purchase blu-rays pretty often. I rip them, store them on my jellyfin sever, then put them in the neighborhood little free library box.

I also visit my local library almost every week. They have a surprisingly excellent movie and tv catalog!

I have now cancelled all my movie and music streaming services!

l72··on Declarative Web Push
My company has a product that allows you to chat with tech support. The end user (our customer's customer), is just someone who went to one of our customers' help portals and requested help via chat.

These chats are going to last < 1 hour typically. There are times when the custom support agent needs to confer with someone else, and then will respond back. The end user, in that case, does not want to sit there with their phone open for 15 minutes, waiting for a response.

While we have an app those end users could download and get notifications on, no one wants to do that for a one off session (not even an App Clip).

Trying to get iOS users to add it to their home screen, is basically a no-go too.

So, it would be really nice if we had a way to send push notifications, even if it was time limited (allow notifications for the next 1 hour).

Don't get me wrong, Push Notification can and are abused. But there are valid use cases.

l72··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
Same. Stayed at an Airbnb in Copenhagen and we picked up and dropped off keys from the pizza shop across the street.

And over the course of our 6 week stay, we definitely ate at that pizza shop a few times!
