l33t233372··on All foster kids in California can now attend any state college for free
Taxing mega corporations more aggressively is one often cited approach, but I agree this doesn’t really provide enough for UBI. 1000 a month to each household would be about 1/20th of our GDP.
l33t233372··on Consumer software is expected to be next fast-growing segment (1994)
Are you implying software isn’t valuable? Because that’s just a non starter — it obviously is.
l33t233372··on ‘World of Warcraft’ players trick AI-scraping website into publishing nonsense
> The public doesn't care how/what the devs want it to do. The public cares about what they can make it do

This is _hacker_ news. I don’t care about what it was “intended” to do either; I care about what it can do when pushed to its limits!

l33t233372··on Become Ungoogleable
If a highschooler is using reddit to find information, I guarantee they find the thread through google.
l33t233372··on Children of alumni no longer have admissions edge at Carnegie Mellon, Pitt
And University of Nebraska, and University of Wisconsin Maddison, and Texas A&M, and Ohio State, and many others.

It seems like you based what you said on some vague notion of prestige, but if you look at the courses offered/required, the topics covered, and the books used of any of the schools I listed, you’ll see it’s effectively the same education as Harvard and the rest.

Unless you think there’s something magical about the professors at Harvard that enables them to teach undergraduate classes far better than professors at state schools, there’s no reason to assume the classes are any higher quality.

l33t233372··on Teaching Programming in the Age of ChatGPT
Exactly. If programmers can be fully and effectively replaced, then almost all white collar jobs can be as well.
l33t233372··on Children of alumni no longer have admissions edge at Carnegie Mellon, Pitt
> Ideally, high quality education would be democratized and made accessible to anyone who want it

It pretty much is. Hardvard undergraduate classes aren’t substantially higher quality than at many other state schools.

l33t233372··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to the “coming wave” of delivery drones?
I would bet that even the worst Amazon truck gets more pounds of product per Joule expended than the best drone for any reasonably real world distance/load.
l33t233372··on “Our paying customers need X, when will you fix it?”
The Github exchange didn’t warrant sharing, but the email was over the line, in my opinion.
l33t233372··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
If you have binaries you almost always have “permission” to do that — you can do whatever you’d like with files on your own system.
l33t233372··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
I agree with the sentiment, but I disagree with this:

> Any attempts to create a Reddit clone.. or system in which people freely communicate is now “regulated” for “hate” speech or “terrorism”.

The fact is that many “systems in which people freely communicate” are regularly first adopted by people who participate in hate speech and terrorism.

l33t233372··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
You can add hooks to functions and “fork” binaries, which is a pretty similar effort to adding training data to given model weights.
l33t233372··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
If the company supplied the employee with the “illegally obtained” books, that could be reason to view the situation differently than an employee acting on their own.

Since the company is obtaining + providing these models with 100% of their input data, it could be argued they have some responsibility to verify the legality of their procurement of the data.

l33t233372··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
Does the fact that it’s old mean it’s part of the scientific method?
l33t233372··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
You can reasonably expect an LLM to respond appropriately often. Which percentage of the time depends on the details, but it’s not much more magic than expecting the bridge you built to hold up.
l33t233372··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
You cannot predict results in _any_ domain with 100% accuracy, especially not in most engineering domains.

Why do you think rockets explode, bridges collapse, etc.

l33t233372··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
Does the scientific method include peer review? I thought that was a recent phenomenon.
l33t233372··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
> One could argue that a university does very little to make a populace more educated, since they can already read, write and do basic math

Universities build on this so that people can do more than just the three R’s…

> Is taking psychology making one better educated?

Yes, without a doubt.

l33t233372··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
Private loans aren’t backed by the government though.
l33t233372··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
I strongly disagree that these are the only 2 possible explanations. The first is clearly not true — these second order effects are well known and often discussed, and the fact that sanctions are used in circumstances when the population is not expected to revolt shows that the second one isn’t the only remaining reason to use sanctions.
l33t233372··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
If you don’t like a product, just buy a different one.
l33t233372··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
What if I (like so many others) want my device manufacturer to retain some kind of control of my device after sale?
l33t233372··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
This sounds like a good thing; the sanctions are working as intended.
l33t233372··on Matrix multiplication using only addition
If you want to explain something in a loose fashion, that works.

It doesn’t work so much for proofs in a lot of mathematics, especially because the “common ground” you speak pf starting at would be hours of explanation behind what you’re trying to say.

l33t233372··on Matrix multiplication using only addition
I think it’s just that what’s being talked about is so precise and so deep in the weeds of nested definitions that you generally need to talk like that, or at least you have to be a truly gifted communicator to write a math paper without it.
l33t233372··on Why is there no government-built social media?
I agree that it’s accurate to describe LinkedIn, but the larger context is subjective moderation on a government run social media platform, so I was trying to point out that what’s safe on LinkedIn is generally considered to be good by the Democratic party.
l33t233372··on Why is there no government-built social media?
I agree with your first point, but I’m unsure about the second.

I don’t think many Democrats secretly don’t support pride month or many Republicans secretly don’t support the 2nd amendment, but then go on to publicly show support so their side doesn’t attack them.

l33t233372··on Why is there no government-built social media?
> Vacuous virtue-signaling 'safe' garbage.

It’s noteworthy to mention that what you are describing is just what one party likes and the other does not.

l33t233372··on Threads, an Instagram app
That’s interesting. I wonder what the legal arguments were
l33t233372··on Threads, an Instagram app
Anti trust for a free service?

Unless you mean from an ads perspective, but there are many ad companies.
