(https://gitlab.com/engmark/root/-/commit/bbb3ff9efb878ddda38...)GNOME Evolution and Thunderbird, at least last I used it, have abysmal search speed, taking seconds to search through a local DB of a few thousand emails. So they're clearly using search tech much inferior to a local DB with indexes.
- Using Kubernetes to host an application when Docker Compose would do (specialist application with <10 concurrent users).
- Using DynamoDB to store a few kB of temporary data in a processing pipeline, despite having several existing PostgreSQL instances already and no DynamoDB ones.
> I spent a half a day or so relatively recently trying to build our CI base image with Nix (at the recommendation of our infra team), but it was huge, and some stuff didn't work because of linking issues.
You must be talking about the official Nix Docker image[1], which indeed is huge. I've been using it for years for a handful of projects, but if the size is an issue you can use the method mentioned in the article and build a very minimal image with only the stuff you specify.[1] https://nix.dev/tutorials/nixos/building-and-running-docker-...
find . -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -printf x | wc -c
performs about the same and includes dotfiles (not "." or "..", though) in the count.[1] https://gitlab.com/engmark/engmark.gitlab.io
