kyran_adept··on Parler CEO says he was fired by board
I am genuinely curious if do you see someone with a sign saying "Kill X" and someone just talking on the internet about undemocratic power change differently? If you see them differently, then why? The acts they are talking about are both crimes. My assumption is that: 1. Not everyone on Parler committed crimes in the physical world - eg. storm the Capitol, so that means that talking about something is not enough to make you break the law, 2. people that did commit crimes will be prosecuted and convicted on already existing laws.
kyran_adept··on Raspberry Pi Server Mark III
I would say it's more about elasticity and the ability to scale horizontally if you take the minimum amount of precautions when designing your app.
kyran_adept··on What language do people speak in the Balkans, anyway? (2019)
I'm genuinely curious, not trying to start a war: what about the Aromanian minority from (Northern) Macedonia? Is that recognized?
kyran_adept··on Six Figures in 6 days
As an Android user, I am completely blown away by two things: #1 iPhones got this only in 2020, when Android had this since the first version, #2 iPhone owners are willing to spend $28 for a icon pack, a very nice one, but still an icon pack.
kyran_adept··on How to properly manage SSH keys for server access
What if you encounter an nginx bug, or a kernel bug? At some point, when you reach a low enough level you will need some deeper investigation tools and finally access to the machine to get enough data and fix the problem.
kyran_adept··on Facebook staffer sends 'blood on my hands' memo
I find it repulsive that no one is discussing that the original author was doxed by a news organization and this was done after a "whistle-blower" leaked their memo to the news org. One person discussing something internally with their peers, and maybe trying to make things better, has their life ruined now because everyone on the internet knows their name.
kyran_adept··on Tim Sweeney on Apple and Google
The closer you are to the root of the tree, the harder it is to "build an alternative". It's the same for the road system, power distribution system, mobile platforms(Android, Apple), etc. I can't afford as a customer to buy a device just to play Fortnite, nor should I.
kyran_adept··on Fastcore: A library that extends Python with new features
Not having _all_ is just part of the problem. With "import *" you also unknowingly load and potentially overwrite symbols. If you specify each symbol you use, it's very simple for even the most basic linter to figure you are doing something wrong.
kyran_adept··on Shared salary spreadsheet reveals Microsoft employee earnings for a second year
You can find most of this online. For software engineers(managers) and Product/Program Managers you start at 59 and go up to 67. At 68 you are a partner and there are very few IC from this level on. At level 70 you are EVP level. At 70+ you are CVP. Support starts at 56 and can go up to at least 61-62. I don't know about the other disciplines.
kyran_adept··on Anti-piracy outfit hires VPN expert to help track down The Pirate Bay
Your method is probably the best you can do. I think the security firm claims, that while the tunnel is up, there is a connection - actual TCP connection, or UDP stream - that associates the client IP to the socket in the VPN infrastructure. If you could intercept that data and track it inside their infra, you could discover what IP PirateBay has on their backend.
kyran_adept··on Moreutils – Unix tools that nobody thought to write (2012)
I know I wanted to do this, but I am very happy such a utility doesn't exist. Unix utilities, usually work in a pipeline fashion, read line -> process -> write to output. This allows them to allocate a limited amount of memory. If you read all input in memory, you are asking for trouble: 'cat /dev/zero | sponge a'.
kyran_adept··on Google’s problems are bigger than just the antitrust case
Piling over your comment regarding YouTube - what is worse? Google owning YouTube and the search engine plus everything else or the fact that YouTube has probably more than 30-40% of the market? One is a problem of monopoly, the second is a problem of choice.

I think for tech, "monopolies" are natural and they stem from the lack of investment needed by the consumer which allows us to choose the best/coolest product at every moment.

For tech it makes more sense to have 1 search engine, 1 social platform, 1 video sharing platform. If cars were easy to change as you wish, I think everyone will gravitate towards a single car brand.

kyran_adept··on 'It's hard to find maintainers': Linus Torvalds ponders Linux's future
I think Linus is at fault here. Having a PR process that requires sending a patch over email, email threads done with super old mailing list software, etc instead of the more modern workflow of using forks, PRs in a web UI, etc is tedious and annoying. Making kernel development and maintaining more accesible to younger people would increase the pool of potential maintainers.
kyran_adept··on Ask HN: Any job boards and age-friendly companies for older developers?
In a FAANG you need to be competitive. If you are junior and 40+, you probably had different priorities and struggles in life, so you might not be willing to have the dedication required.

It also creates problems for both you and your peers - you will have a very ambitious 28 yo giving guidance, from a management or senior position, to a 40+ yo. You might feel bad in that situation and it's not going to be easy for the younger person having to guide you.

kyran_adept··on Facebook to shift permanently toward more remote work after coronavirus
If the money is more equally distributed, the quality of life will also become equally distributed. I imagine the next "Facebook city" at the border of "nowhere" and "farm ville" will get immediately a huge influx of hospitals, gourmet restaurants and private schools to supply its citizens.
kyran_adept··on Why herd immunity to Covid-19 is reached much earlier than thought
The same as you assume some people died at home, some people got infected without symptoms at home and are now recovered. Unless you do a mass test of antibodies it will be hard to estimate the real number of infected and recovered people.
