kylemaxwell··on The Fall of Hacker Groups
I don't agree with the thesis here. As somebody whose day job involves tracking "hacker groups" in the adversarial sense and whose hobbies largely involve belonging to "hacker groups" in the doing-cool-shit sense, I feel like there's an assertion with precisely no evidence to support it.

Also, statements like "We live in days of limited creativity" strike me as extreme nostalgia and conservatism. We live in days of INCREDIBLE creativity, in my view.

kylemaxwell··on NoSQL Meets Bitcoin and Brings Down Two Exchanges
Not quite understanding the focus on NoSQL for this use case set. I love MongoDB in the right place and Redis in others. But when you have a bunch of requirements that lend themselves to traditional DBs, choosing MongoDB or HyperDex feels like choosing a tech because it's cool rather than because it is the proper engineering choice.
kylemaxwell··on Tech Startups Are Targets of Ransom Cyberattacks
Also Twitch uses IRC for its chatting, so streamers (which have a lot of overlap here) frequently leak their addresses without realizing it.
kylemaxwell··on DIY Computer Science Degree
The point is that you are conflating "slinging code" with "computer science". To paraphrase an old truism, you're talking about pointing a telescope and we're talking about astronomy.
kylemaxwell··on DIY Computer Science Degree
No - your original comment doesn't make sense. I don't mean "I disagree", although from what little I can make out, I probably do. I mean "it doesn't fully parse".
kylemaxwell··on Apache Wave
I wish every day for this to finally become usable and deployable. A bit of GitHub integration and I have tons of places I'd get Wave going again.
kylemaxwell··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Bullshit. Any opinion is okay but if you are actively working to remove existing rights from other people, you can expect opprobrium. This applies especially when leading an organization with values like Mozilla's.
kylemaxwell··on Google Maps now lets you find and catch wild Pokémon
This would probably be more popular than Ingress if they did it right. And yes, combined with the "other" AR (augmented vs alternate) it would be revolutionary.
kylemaxwell··on Amazon WorkSpaces
Except Azure VDI is already a thing.
kylemaxwell··on Amazon WorkSpaces
When there's a Linux client, you could do this easily by adapting any one of several distros.
kylemaxwell··on The Videogame That Finally Made Me Feel Like a Human Being
Accidentally upvoted. So to counteract: TFA is talking about children. You know, impressionable and malleable young minds that don't yet have the benefit of wisdom and experience.

Your post is Shit HN Says material.

kylemaxwell··on Social Network for Gamers
Don't assume that all gamers are the same any more than all programmers are.
kylemaxwell··on Verizon Using Recent Net Neutrality Victory to Wage War Against Netflix?
And all design is beautiful.
kylemaxwell··on Project Euler
For those interested I keep a list of these sorts of things at https://github.com/technoskald/coding-entertainment.
kylemaxwell··on Paths to being a kernel hacker
I seem to recall that getting started in BSD kernels looked easier, at least 10-12 years ago. More organized, plenty of literature, and (Theo notwithstanding) a friendly community.
kylemaxwell··on Fired? Speak No Evil
It would be great if everyone were in a life situation to be able to do that. Unfortunately, most people are not.
kylemaxwell··on About Python 3
accidentally upvoted. but why did you even bother posting that?
kylemaxwell··on Girls Who Code
Best comment in this thread.
kylemaxwell··on Lynching on our Doorstep
As an upper middle class guy who married a working class immigrant nearly 15 years ago, I can say that your statement is mostly hyperbole.
kylemaxwell··on Lynching on our Doorstep
The white man's burden truly is a difficult one to bear.

/sarcasm

kylemaxwell··on Lynching on our Doorstep
Help me understand: are you under the impression that shared professional interests are what make a personal, intimate relationship work?

Really?

kylemaxwell··on Climate change expert's fraud was 'crime of massive proportion,' say feds
For clarity: his fraud was not related to climate science at all, but "for lying to his bosses and saying he was a CIA spy working in Pakistan so he could avoid doing his real job."
kylemaxwell··on SteamOS: It's here
I'd rather just go to the official site, myself.

http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown

kylemaxwell··on Is it bad practice to use your real name online?
That is exactly the opposite of what you said above.
kylemaxwell··on Amazon Code Ninjas
I'll take "Shit HN Says" for $500, Alex...
kylemaxwell··on Isowall: Mini-firewall that completely isolates a device from the local network
FWIW, I just talked to the author (Robert Graham) about it, and he responded:

"bah, I need to fix that"

https://twitter.com/ErrataRob/status/399979105854058497

EDIT: And he pushed a LICENSE file just now.

"I provide this code with no warrantee whatsoever. But hey, if you want to take the risk and run it, go for it."

kylemaxwell··on Isowall: Mini-firewall that completely isolates a device from the local network
This is the difference between "open source" and "disclosed source".
kylemaxwell··on International Space Station Infected With USB Stick Malware
Thanks for the references (and no worries on the "grumpiness" :) ) but I still don't think this qualifies as an "epidemic", to use Kaspersky's wording.
kylemaxwell··on International Space Station Infected With USB Stick Malware
>Kaspersky revealed that Russian astronauts carried a removable device into space which infected systems on the space station. He did not elaborate on the impact of the infection on operations of the International Space Station (ISS).

>Kaspersky said he had been told that from time to time there were "virus epidemics" on the station.

Given the total lack of supporting evidence here, I'm going to stick a big ol' [citation needed] sticker on this.

kylemaxwell··on Why You Should Never Use MongoDB
"You should never use MongoDB [the way we did]". For some use cases, it would be a terrible decision, as this project learned. In others, it works fine, even with the "eventually consistent" sort of thing. I knew it would go bad when the author immediately started talking about web apps from the get-go, because (as unusual as this may seem to some subset of developers) not everything is a webapp.
