kyleblarson··on Coronal mass ejection impact imminent, two more earth-directed CMEs
I have 2 wells, irrigation, a big shop and a smallish house. I live on the eastern crest of the North Cascades mountains in Washington State US and it can be -30c in the winter and 40c in the summer. Heat pump system with wood backup for the house and woodstove in the shop. When looking at the costs to put in the genset the difference to go big was de minimus.

I have a 50kw generac tied into my house with a 1000 gallon propane tank.

I was a bit too young to get too many shows (I saw one in 1993 and a couple of JGB after that), but I have extremely fond memories of going to the local head shop in my town that had a massive tape collection. You would bring 6 blank tapes and pick 5 from their library that they would copy for you and keep the other blank as payment.
kyleblarson··on Ask HN: What nonfiction books do you keep rereading?
I can usually pick up any Michael Lewis book and be entertained even if it's the 5th timing reading it.

kyleblarson··on Heat pumps, more than you wanted to know (2023)
I don't have an idealogical horse in this race, but I bought a ~2500sqft home a few years back in an area where summer highs can get to 100f and winter lows can reach -25f. The house only had a 20 year old electric furnace and no AC. Replaced it with a large heat pump system with a new electric furnace for backup heat when it gets super cold. Also included an air filtration system. It was a big cash outlay, but totally worth it as we now have AC in the summer so we can keep windows closed when the smoke is bad, the filtration system works really well for the smoke, and the system almost never needs to use the furnace backup. Speaking with the previous owner, the winter electric bill savings have been around 30%.
kyleblarson··on Booking.com hackers increase attacks on customers
I work in this industry and the rate of fraud from bcom bookings is massively higher than other channels.
kyleblarson··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
I should add that I live in an area where ~40% of my driving is not on pavement, I am in 4wd at least half of my driving time and I have a second set of wheels w studs that I run from Nov to early Apr.
kyleblarson··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
I have had 5 Toyota trucks and only replace them because I get antsy every few years for the newest thing. Never had a single problem with one and my current 19 taco at 70k miles just feels like a break in period. Each time the trade is is quite close to what I paid for it. Have been looking at getting a late 80's 4runner as a fun second rig and don't anticipate any issues with that either.

As a general rule I do not listen to people who fly hundreds of thousands of miles per year in private jets while suggesting that others sacrifice.

kyleblarson··on Children of alumni no longer have admissions edge at Carnegie Mellon, Pitt
Yeah right. Just as schools are already working around affirmative action rulings to continue to effect actual institutional racism, they will find a way to continue to give legacies a leg up in the admissions process. With the size of endowments of top schools these days they effectively operate as for-profit hedge funds that happen to have educational institutions attached. Does anyone seriously think a school would say "thanks for that library you donated but your grand kid only has a 3.8 gpa so maybe look at state schools."

kyleblarson··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
Upon rereading the quote I noticed the use of "in a resurfaced interview". I wonder if that was an intentional jab.
kyleblarson··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
This quote shines light on his hiring philosophy: “When I started the business, one of the things you’ll find, there are other sub-operators out there, but they typically have, uh, gentlemen who are ex-military submariners, and they — you’ll see a whole bunch of 50-year-old white guys,” Rush told Teledyne Marine in a resurfaced interview.

“I wanted our team to be younger, to be inspirational and I’m not going to inspire a 16-year-old to go pursue marine technology, but a 25-year-old, uh, you know, who’s a sub pilot or a platform operator or one of our techs can be inspirational,” said Rush.
