Want to become an autonomous vehicle engineer?

I put together a resource guide here: https://becomeautonomous.com

kyle_martin1··on Show HN: An open-source, Raspberry-Pi-based Siri alternative
I actually made this exact thing Saturday afternoon. Great job!

First prototype was on an Arduino it and eventually ran out of firmware space. So then I upgraded to the RPi and from there it was a breeze.

Suggestions:

(1) Use Wit.ai for NLP. There is some added latency but the capabilities far out reach Sphinx in the long run. It's free. Less code to maintain. Easier to deploy and distribute.

(2) Try to find a small mic so that you can put everything in a sleek package.

(3) Add support for bluetooth speakers (you're on a RPi, it's basically done for you)

(4) 3D print a custom case, throw some 3M tape on it and it's ready to be wall-mounted!

Love objc.io and their consistent quality iOS articles. I learn at least a few new things with every newsletter.
kyle_martin1··on Github now supports rendering tabular data
I totally agree. This the next logical step.
kyle_martin1··on Show HN: A Search Engine for Developers, Marketers, Web Designers, and Hackers
This would be a very good tool to find XSS vulnerable websites.
kyle_martin1··on Essential Math for Games Programmers
Commenting to save.
kyle_martin1··on Sneak peek of Macaw – a code-savvy web design tool [video]
Awesome! What's the price point?
kyle_martin1··on Show HN: HN Special – A visual theme and Chrome extension for Hacker News
I like the overall design but the links are too light orange which make it hard to read. Design's number one goal is to 'get out the way of the user'. Change the link color to something with more contrast against the white background. Then I'll really like it.
kyle_martin1··on Do Things that Don't Scale
Holy shit. This is exactly what I've been doing and it's working incredibly well. For PG to confirm everything I've been doing...I'm on cloud nine.
kyle_martin1··on Capture the flag 2013
Agreed!
kyle_martin1··on Calca iOS - Mathematical text editor for engineers
It would be really neat if you could tap a number and drag it left or or right to adjust it's value. Everything would recalculate and you could have a small dialog box out to the side to adjust the increment level of the 'drag adjustment'. An iPhone screen probably wouldn't have room for the dialog box so you could putting it in settings but for iPad it would fit just fine.
kyle_martin1··on Capture the flag 2013
Interestingly, they're using the same technique for the cloud effect as that Japanese energy drink site that was posted here not too long ago.
kyle_martin1··on Edward Snowden: 'The US government will say I aided our enemies' [video]
So this interview was released today but it was recorded on the same day as the previous interview?
kyle_martin1··on Ask HN: Good technology podcasts?
It sounds like you want to be listening to a podcast called "This Developer's Life" (thisdeveloperslife.com). I really enjoy them and hope you do too.

Here's the some others I've enjoyed over the past year or so in case you're interested in others:

Technology Entrepreneurship: Startups For The Rest of Us

General Entrepreneurship: The Lifestyle Business Podcast, Mixergy, Entrepreneur On Fire, The Advanced Selling Podcast

Misc Interesting: Freakonomics Radio, NPR: Planet Money, This American Life

Please message me if you find anything interesting or if just having a bad day for that matter.

kyle_martin1··on Wi-Vi: See Through Walls with Wi-Fi Signals
You are correct. We can determine what an object is made out of or at least behaves like based on the reflected EM waves. Every piece of matter has an associated electric permittivity and permeability. These can, and often do, change with temperature and the other environmental variables.
kyle_martin1··on Ask HN: Good technology podcasts?
Could you be a bit more specific about what kind of technology? Technology entrepreneurship? Programming? Security? Electrical Engineering? Etc.
kyle_martin1··on Julian Assange: Edward Snowden is ‘marooned in Russia’
Let's assume Snowden is caught and is up for trial.

The article mentions that there is more confidential data to be released and it has been distributed to insure it's eventual release. Do you think WikiLeaks would threaten to release the information if Snowden is convicted of any crimes?

If this threat were to be made, I'd imagine the USA would convict him anyways and WikiLeaks releases all the information. And then all hell breaks loose. Or perhaps the USA negotiates with WikiLeaks & Snowden?

Also, where's Anonymous in all of this? You'd imagine they'd have their hands all over this, right?

kyle_martin1··on Wi-Vi: See Through Walls with Wi-Fi Signals
If you think this hasn't been cheaply implemented before then you're behind research in wave propagation brother. Search on IEEE if you're interested.
kyle_martin1··on Wi-Vi: See Through Walls with Wi-Fi Signals
RF and EE here. This is nothing new. Or at least a motivated junior/senior in college would stumble upon this simple application of wave propagation theory pretty early on.
kyle_martin1··on CallDay.org by StopWatchingUs: Call your representatives about NSA surveillance
Funny thing is, the NSA knows that you're calling them. ;(

kyle_martin1··on Homemade GPS Receiver
I'm a software developer gone electrical/computer engineer and this is still a very high-level overview. You need to understand many advance physics topics like RF, antennas design, extremely complicated DSP algorithms, hardware architecture and design for the FPGA, etc. The breadth and deep understanding of very hard topics is VERY different than most web developers/people on here that write toy utilities programs then post a link to Github..
kyle_martin1··on Thesis Hatement
Well then the HN title should've reflected that somehow...
kyle_martin1··on Thesis Hatement
Sensational and over generalizing title. This should be downvoted for being misleading. Of course a PhD in literature is going to have almost zero prospective jobs. There's no demand. I'm a EE and in the engineering world this is certainly not the case.
kyle_martin1··on NUI: style your iOS app with style sheets
I REALLY want something like this. Like the others said, it must use appearance proxies whenever possible. I literally want to add the source files, edit the .nss file and it works.
kyle_martin1··on Vi(m) keybindings and features for Xcode
Just downloaded and installed trail. Works really well from my initial testing. One command that most people use a lot is 'jj' for quick exiting of insert mode. Also, '$' jumps to the next to last character of a line. It should jump to the very end of the line. If you added/fixed these two things I would totally buy it!
kyle_martin1··on Show HN:Music Stream - stream music between iOS devices
Downloading now. I'll update my comment with initials thoughts and likes/dislikes.
kyle_martin1··on Show HN: TaskUp.com - the only task list you'll ever need
...or just use pen & paper and put the paper in your pocket. Stop wasting time on dainty todo lists and start building something ACTUALLY worth talking about.

kyle_martin1··on Show HN: Hipmob Live Chat for iPad: perfect for m-commerce & Saas apps
Just wanted to mention that these guys give great support to any developer trying to integrate Hipmob into their app. My app will be released quite soon and I can't wait to chat with my own users!
