I don't trust Copilot because it has been trained on my code.

kykeonaut··on SunOS 4.1.4 says it can't possibly be the year 2023
Yeah, I am versed in the COBOL world as much as the next guy (so not much at all), but I would sleep better knowing that the financial systems are safe from yet one more end-of-the-world crisis.
kykeonaut··on SunOS 4.1.4 says it can't possibly be the year 2023
Some OSs like OpenBSD have already implemented a 64-bit timestamp to account for this [0].

I am not sure about Linux.

I would think that this is a problem that would greatly affect older systems (like all the banks' mainframes... yikes!)

kykeonaut··on Stripe is no longer a suitable payment processor
Another downside of these alternatives is that they are not decentralized either. USDT and USDC are controlled by a single entity each. The top 0.01% of Bitcoin holders own 27% of all the Bitcoin [0], and even worse, the top 0.1% of Bitcoin miners control half of the miner capacity [1]. I am not sure about Ethereum, but as in any pure capitalistic system, the accumulation of wealth by a few is inevitable [2].

HN has a rule to not editorialize titles [0]. Hence why you technically can't make better titles.

[0] "Otherwise please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait; don't editorialize." https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

kykeonaut··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
HN is a weird place to ask for technical support.

edit: come on guys isajoke ;-;

kykeonaut··on Fitch Downgrades the US Rating to 'AA+'
Agreed. Although progressive politicians, or as I like to call them, the right-light, do contribute their fair share of problems.
kykeonaut··on Fitch Downgrades the US Rating to 'AA+'
Downgrading from a AAA rating to a AA+ rating sounds like the least advantageous from a game theory perspective as well.

I wish politicians weren't so short-sided.

kykeonaut··on Emacs is my new window manager
If this isn't the most, "Emacs is a great operating system..." moment, I don't know what is.
kykeonaut··on Free and open source software projects are in transition
Or you can start publishing extremely poor code ;)
kykeonaut··on Airlines are a lot like central banks (2020)
Ha, I just posted about this in another discussion about an hour ago [0]. It astonishes me how a link to an article tucked away in a thread can find itself in the top page of HN an hour later.

kykeonaut··on Happy 30th FreeBSD: Why FreeBSD open source project has endured
I would argue that you really did learn the Unix way with FreeBSD.
kykeonaut··on Tell HN: Airbnb’s transparent pricing is a lie
I think it might be because most airlines don't make almost any profit on tickets themselves, but now rely on selling frequent flyer miles to companies to turn profit [0].

In other words, ticket purchasers are not their costumers anymore.

kykeonaut··on Happy 30th FreeBSD: Why FreeBSD open source project has endured
True, but one of the advantages of the BSDs is that they provide an alternative way of doing things. For FreeBSD, you have Jails with Pot and Potluck and other alternatives. It might not be the de facto way of doing things, but the BSDs have never really been keen on following the standard way at the cost of everything else.
kykeonaut··on Happy 30th FreeBSD: Why FreeBSD open source project has endured
To be fair, Debian used to work even for FreeBSD back in the day with Debian GNU/kFreeBSD.
kykeonaut··on Happy 30th FreeBSD: Why FreeBSD open source project has endured
Yeah, it seems to be an ever increasing issue. I wonder what would be the minimum server specs to successfully fend off the hug of death.
kykeonaut··on Argonne National Lab is attempting to replicate LK-99
Gotem
kykeonaut··on Argonne National Lab is attempting to replicate LK-99
The only thing valuable that academic journals and conferences bring to the table is the peer-review process. Which, to be fair, is needed.

In this case, the peer review is being conducted without the need for publishing venues. However, I don't think that is usually the case. Take a look at the countless number of ArXiv papers that lack any sort of peer review.

kykeonaut··on So you want to build your own open source chatbot
If I am trying to contact a business, it is because I have a question that their site wasn't able to answer, or I need to contact a representative to do something I can't do on the website (think canceling a service).

Having a talking FAQ page is, in my opinion, trying to compensate for lacking UX practices, and chances are that if the business didn't include the information I am seeking for in their website, they won't include it in the chatbot.

That said, I think that chatbots could assist customers in getting in contact with the right representative, but trying to have chatbots as a wall between getting human help is imho an anti-pattern

kykeonaut··on Mexico's heirloom corn strains are resurging amid more demand
You can see evidence of this genetic experimentation with crops in Moray, a set of terraces built at different altitude levels created by the Inca culture in the Andes mountains [0]. It is believed that the Incas would acclimatize crops to the high elevations of the Andes mountains in these terraces.

kykeonaut··on Mexico's heirloom corn strains are resurging amid more demand
I literally just bought some nixtamal online the other day, I wish there were more shops that carried it.

More interestingly, I was extremely surprised to discover that nixtamal is completely absent in South America, despite the high consumption of corn products. I lived in Peru for a time, and buying nixtamal was impossible, not one vendor, physical or online, carried it.

kykeonaut··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
I think the main difference is that Apple already controlled what operating systems can run Safari via other mediums. Adding this to Safari effectively changes nothing regarding the web ecosystem on Apple devices.
kykeonaut··on A world where people pay for software
Yep, as well as charging for support and consulting. Anything that has to do with developers'/maintainers' time should not be expected to come for free in FOSS projects. Unless the devs are happy to do such work for free ofc.
kykeonaut··on A world where people pay for software
I am of the idea that software should be free, but software development should be for profit.
kykeonaut··on Show HN: Invoice Dragon – An open source app to create PDF invoices
I actually created an over-engineered LaTex template for my invoices, and it was such a pain in the arse. I can't believe I never thought of using Google Sheets or Excel.
kykeonaut··on Young people are flocking to astrology
What interests me about the article is the fallout between astronomy and astrology, akin to the fallout between medicine and magic.

Western scientific culture is so obsessed with the tangible that we minimize (and to some point ridicule) spirituality, although science and spirituality at some point were once one and the same.

Human beings need spiritual experiences, and "young" people flocking to astrology seems like a response to this evident lack of spirituality in Western culture.

kykeonaut··on Is Software Getting Worse?
> What seems new to me is that software that used to be good deteriorates

I think you can say the same about any industry, not only software. There are countless products that "aren't made how they used to".

kykeonaut··on Web Environment Integrity API Proposal
I am not a hopeful romantic, but the EU has been investing on vendor neutral web-browsers like Nyxt [0] and the UR Browser [1] through the Horizon Europe program. I doubt that legislators (at least in the EU) will view this as a positive development, assuming EU legislators know what they are doing. On the other hand, lobbying by big tech is still very much a threat.

kykeonaut··on Show HN: Primo – a visual CMS with Svelte blocks, a code editor, and SSG
I think people are attached to Wordpress for the same reason we are attached to Javascript. At the time, it was one of the only ways of easily creating a blog.

The problem with Wordpress is that once you need to do something outside of the norm then all of the sudden you need deep knowledge of Wordpress's inner workings.

kykeonaut··on Show HN: Primo – a visual CMS with Svelte blocks, a code editor, and SSG
Yep, that is actually a big problem (benefit?) with Wordpress, were all the code is redistributable because of the GPL license. So paid plugin developers are in this weird limbo were they are charging people for their plugins without telling them that the code is freely redistributable.
kykeonaut··on Show HN: Primo – a visual CMS with Svelte blocks, a code editor, and SSG
Thank you for using an MIT license :)
