I work on engineering software in Debian, particularly in the FreeCAD ecosystem.

kwk1··on Field geology at Mars' equator points to ancient megaflood
> A hypothesis that is getting more traction is that narrow equatorial rift seas (like the Red Sea) would have prevented inflow of the sea glaciers enough for thin-ice refuges to exist.

Wow, that makes imagining conditions on the Snowball Earth all the more fascinating, thank you.

kwk1··on I Took a Break from Ham Radio and Why I Came Back
> encryption is forbidden

Encryption for the purposes of obscuring the meaning of a message, which provides a bit of wiggle room. For example it should be permissible to send a message signed with a private key and then include the public key to decipher it along with the transmission to prove the transmitter is the identity associated with the keys. That should be enough to have something IRClike on AMPRnet...

kwk1··on Fire on the Mountain: Rethinking Forest Management in the Sierra Nevada (2018) [pdf]
I'm pretty sure the comment you're replying to didn't intend to suggest any connection between the Sierra Nevada and the Great Smoky Mountains, but to show that the usage of "smoky" as an adjective for mountains does not necessarily mean literal smoke. The Great Smoky Mountains are just one example of this usage (thus "Great".) Similarly note the usage of "blue peaks" which probably doesn't mean the peaks were actually blue but that Rayleigh scattering was being observed.

kwk1··on RaspberryPi 4 home lab with LXD cluster
With the release of 4.6, there was a change in the way LXD handles its dqlite dependency that should mean the long effort to have it packaged for Debian will be coming to a close.

kwk1··on Drug cartel ‘narco-antennas’ make life dangerous for Mexico’s repairmen
Hmm, I think there's some confusion about my comment here. I'll use your reference to veganism as an example. Individual vegans can choose a diet which, for themselves, minimizes the harm caused by their choices. But at a larger-than-individual scale there are those who recognize that reducing meat consumption means addressing the reasons people eat meat, and that in turn means things like (but not limited to) developing meat alternative products that satiate people's cravings for meat. So, while veganism may be a good enough choice for yourself, it's unrealistic to not recognize the reasons why people don't choose it and to not keep those reasons in consideration when coming up with a strategy.
kwk1··on Drug cartel ‘narco-antennas’ make life dangerous for Mexico’s repairmen
That individual consumer stopping won't actually fix the problem though, it'll just remove from them any moral obligation to do anything to actually fix things under your framework.

kwk1··on LXD – next generation system container manager release 4.3
It's unfortunate that the effort to get LXD packaged natively in Debian [1] seem to have stalled as this is definitely one of the last remaining drawbacks for me.

For example, when LXD was still available as a .deb from upstream, it was possible to run LXD inside a container and do nesting, but with the snap, that isn't possible anymore. (However it is now with the --vm flag, though that's really a different mechanism.)

As I understand it the big remaining difficulty is dqlite.

kwk1··on The Uncertain Future of Ham Radio
There are amateur radio activities that don't necessarily fit into the "session" scope that are still interesting. For example, there is the AMPRNet [1], a TCP/IP over AX.25 block of the Internet on 44.0.0.0/8. There is a similar effort called Hamwan with its Puget Sound Data Ring [2].

kwk1··on The Uncertain Future of Ham Radio
> What’s the actual point for the license in the first place?

The electromagnetic spectrum is a limited resource; an amateur radio license is a license to do certain kinds of experiments in the spectrum. The kind of activity that makes up these experiments when done by someone who doesn't know what they're doing has the potential to cause harm which is hugely disproportionate to the amount of effort it would take to do it. While it's possible to pinpoint individual offenders, if unlicensed activity was widespread then the ability to do so would be overwhelmed.

kwk1··on Extraordinary ‘megaflash’ lightning strikes cover several hundred kilometres
Just a guess, but normally lightning is caused by potential difference between the air and ground, so you roughly speaking have two potential surfaces/regions. For this to happen laterally, perhaps it would be enough to have three masses of air separated by two pressure fronts, with the interactions at the air masses' boundaries acting something like charge buildup across parallel plate capacitors. And then, dielectric breakdown happens.
kwk1··on A Nvidia Engineer Wrote a Vulkan Driver That Works on Older Raspberry Pi
To me it may be a tell for the writers at one point pronouncing it as "'istoric", similar to those who say human as "'uman", and then as you said likely fanning out as an over-correction, possibly because that dialect was associated with prestige.
kwk1··on Gravity Is Not Like the Other Forces
This is a good point. Potential energy is relative to a datum, which is arbitrary. So you could say a box on a table has no potential gravitational energy relative to the table, but it does have some relative to the floor. But there was no actual change in energy between the two measurements.

kwk1··on Our restaurants are failing. Why should food delivery apps thrive?
> I think it's helpful to separate out pricing from product when talking about morality in business.

I don't think the two are so easily separable. If you take for example, "a dozen eggs", most people would consider that an acceptable product. But if you said "a dozen eggs for ten cents", for those to be legitimate eggs, they must be stolen. If you could somehow inspect them and guarantee they were legitimate, I am sure plenty of people would accept those stolen eggs at that price, but their willingness to pay for it doesn't mean the existence of a market for "a dozen eggs for ten cents" is moral.

kwk1··on FreeCAD on Raspberry Pi 4
Hi all, I'm the FreeCAD Debian package maintainer. I just wanted to touch on the "complex technical reasons" portion. Broadly speaking, it's an interaction with our scenegraph library Coin [1] and Qt 4/Qt 5--things work with Qt 4 on ARM, but crash with Qt 5, which is now the default build configuration in Debian due to Qt 4 removal. The full troubleshooting thread is on the FreeCAD forums. [2] That bug is an outstanding issue and blocks Qt 5 support on ARM, so if anyone wants to be heroic feel free to go digging there and look for a fix. The above post presents the instructions for a Python 2, Qt 4 build, but it's also possible, with the most recent versions of several packages plus a rebuild, to have a Python 3, Qt 4 build.

Since it seems like there's a good demand for FreeCAD on ARM between Raspberry Pis and even the new Pinebook Pro, and there's now opportunity with our recent DigitalOcean infrastructure sponsorship [3], I think I'm going to start up an apt repository soon for ARM packages, at, say, apt.freecad.io. That way I can provide the dependencies for Python 3 builds, plus FreeCAD itself in Python 2 & 3 flavors of 0.18.4 stable, and eventually daily builds as well. This is in addition to the PPA [4] which could provide ARM packages for Ubuntu on the Pi/PBP, but I mostly have those architectures disabled currently.

kwk1··on Ask HN: Which project does not have any good open-source alternatives?
> It... needs work.

Hah, very true. I have been working directly with OpenFOAM upstream to improve the packaging situation on Debian/Ubuntu but unfortunately I didn't get started in time for the 18.04 release. It's a bit tricky too in that many FreeCAD developers use Linux but I would bet most of our potential engineering end-users would be on Windows. Thanks for your feedback.
