kvh··on The Look of a Winner
see http://www.stat.columbia.edu/~cook/movabletype/archives/2009....

"one possibility is that the more serious candidates (the ones we know are going to win anyway) are more attractive. Maybe you have some goofy-looking people who decide to run in districts where they don't have a chance, whereas the politicians who really have a shot at being in congress take the time to get their hair cut, etc."

kvh··on Ask HN: Can I write a recommendation engine for HN?

Can I write a recommendation engine for HN?

Simple item-based (hackers who upvoted this article also upvoted...) and/or user-based (hackers who upvoted similar articles to you, upvoted ... ) recommendations would be cool to see on HN, possibly as a way to access (relatively) older content that one might have missed. this assumes people are actually away from the site long enough to miss something -- unlikely. addicts!

kvh··on Opera adds a splash page to celebrate 15 years of web innovation
I use it on my mbp. I agree the feature set is inferior, but its the only browser that can handle the 50+ tabs i like to have open at once. ff3 eats up cpu and overheats things.
kvh··on A.P. Moving to Halt Use of Newspaper Articles on Web Sites
The internet has made media non-excludable and the media aren't willing to accept this, for understandable reasons--a non-rival and non-excludable good doesn't make you much money! Short sell!
