kurtis_reed··on Navier–Stokes Lost in Translation
Yes however, whether a natural language proof and a formal proof "correspond" is subjective.
kurtis_reed··on Navier–Stokes Lost in Translation
How do you know the natural language proof is incorrect?

Why creepy? Apparently the AI did most of the work, so they put the spotlight on that, duh.
kurtis_reed··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
Pure math has been overvalued for a long time. Now that we don't need humans for it, it's really time for pure mathematicians to pack it in.

kurtis_reed··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
If solving a problem is "purely" theoretical it's of no use outside the math community's enjoyment. Otherwise it's not purely theoretical.

> none of the millennium problems have anything to do with a "real" problem

P vs NP has a lot to do with real problems.

> this is ABSOLUTELY not how actual mathematicians see their field

Yeah and they should start seeing it differently

kurtis_reed··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Indeed. As Nassim Taleb says, "Something bad for the (existing) class of mathematicians as they lose their privilege, but not necessarily bad for mathematics & our body of knowledge?" https://xcancel.com/nntaleb/status/2098498124419305639

kurtis_reed··on How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy
A better alternative is just to make all your work open and public, then everyone can see what you should get credit for.
kurtis_reed··on How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy
> it convinces decision makers that human mathematicians are obsolete, and it convinces young people that their passion for mathematics has no future

Maybe those things are true, so maybe they should be convinced?

kurtis_reed··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
Tao seems to be stuck in a pure-math-for-the-benefit-of-pure-mathematicians mindset. The rest of us care about applications of math, not math itself.
kurtis_reed··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
Plenty of new open problems will come from applications, and applications are what actually matters. Pure mathematicians are wrapped up in math for the sake of math which is a fun academic game but not something the rest of us should care about.

English doesn't do quotation marks like that
kurtis_reed··on This blog is written in en-GB
Actually, it's "either the word 'whom' or when to use it". I guess you should learn actual English.
kurtis_reed··on This blog is written in en-GB
Imagine someone wrote a blog in some obscure language that few people speak. If you happen to know that language, you'd think wow this is great. If you don't happen to know that language, you'd just think it's a shame. This is the same thing, just to a lesser degree. Some people might be interested in putting in the effort to learn a bunch of foreign cultural references, but not everyone.

You could just use the US terms, then you wouldn't have to learn both.
