kungfooguru··on Rust 1.1 Stable, the Community Subteam, and RustCamp
I'd be suspcious of anyone who wasn't ok with violence against Nazis...
kungfooguru··on French Uber protests block airports
2. They lose money and have to wait in long lines to get their money when you use a credit card. Don't blame the worker.

4. Sure, kind of annoying I guess...

I've had far more really enjoyable cab rides with Chicago drivers than I have had ones that are even slightly uncomfortable or rude.

kungfooguru··on Alchemist v1.0 is released – Elixir Tooling Integration Into Emacs
Maybe better to just link to https://github.com/tonini/alchemist.el/releases/tag/v1.0.0
kungfooguru··on Look Ma, no OS
My thoughts as well. And if you one does accept the restrictions I'd hope they remove the performance penalties associated with binding everything so late so it can be swapped.
kungfooguru··on Reproducible Builds in Go
I bet it works great for Google or anyone else who keeps everything in one big repo and isn't developing open source applications.
kungfooguru··on Elixir vs. Erlang: a question of momentum
Removing features is a lot harder than adding them :)
kungfooguru··on Elixir vs. Erlang: a question of momentum
It should be noted that rebar3 (http://rebar3.org) uses hex for packages and has a plugin for working with hex repos https://github.com/tsloughter/rebar3_hex
kungfooguru··on Elixir vs. Erlang: a question of momentum
The Ericsson team does plan to open up things like that.

But pmods shouldn't be used like an example of them going against the community in driving the language forward. Very very few people in the community objected to their removal. Many of us were happy and thought it should have happened much earlier.

kungfooguru··on Elixir vs. Erlang: a question of momentum
Erlang's killer framework is OTP. Not everything is for writing webapps.

I'm happy for Erlang to never have a decent web framework. I prefer Erlang (I don't write webapps) but point everyone to Elixir and Phoenix if they want to do webapps.

kungfooguru··on Lessons from porting integration tests from Ruby to Haskell
Do you plan to release any of this code? I'd love to see how the internals look for that.
kungfooguru··on How I Start: Clojure
If you look at the rest of the posts on howistart.org you'll see that each mentions in some way the authors development environment of choice. This is on purpose, howistart is meant to be opinionated and show how the author works, not attempt to be generic.
kungfooguru··on CoreOS (YC S13) Raises $12M to Bring Kubernetes to the Enterprise
Aren't they doing the same thing people have been complaining about Docker doing? Running with features but not stablizing? Is CoreOS not as unstable as the impression I've gotten of it from comments led me to believe?
kungfooguru··on Send Money to Friends in Messenger
Why? That isn't their function. They aren't making money off your checking account.
kungfooguru··on Why bet365 made the switch to Erlang
It seems they changed it. I can't get to it now either.
kungfooguru··on The Go Programming Language by Brian W. Kernighan, Alan Donovan
Why... that isn't what they do. There are people more qualified that actually are working on the future.

More qualified because Kernighan isn't a programming languages researcher, what he has done and does may be great, but just because he is great in one section of computer science doesn't mean there is any reason to expect or even want him or others to venture into other sections just because.

kungfooguru··on Seriously, we need multi-column editors
Seriously, use emacs.
kungfooguru··on Yanis Varoufakis: How I became an erratic Marxist (2013)
If it wasn't clear from your earlier comments it is now that if you have read any Marx you didn't understand it.

> Marx himself mostly hated local socialists (they wanted practical stuff and found him ridiculous).

HAH! That is the complete opposite:

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1880/05/parti-ou...

'Accusing Guesde and Lafargue of “revolutionary phrase-mongering” and of denying the value of reformist struggles, Marx made his famous remark that, if their politics represented Marxism, “ce qu'il y a de certain c'est que moi, je ne suis pas Marxiste” (“what is certain is that I myself am not a Marxist”).'

kungfooguru··on Building Haskell Projects with Halcyon and Heroku
Halcyon and deploying to Heroku for Haskell is really great, I use it for http://howistart.org/ (https://github.com/howistart/howistart.org)
kungfooguru··on Excoin exchange's Bitcoins stolen, will be shutting down
Right, $250k, not really worth nothing every time since that is basically infinity to everyone in the US.
kungfooguru··on Excoin exchange's Bitcoins stolen, will be shutting down
When you put $100 in a bank it doesn't matter if that exact $100 bill is stolen by a bank robber, you still have $100 in the bank. Additionally bank accounts are federally insured.

That isn't the case with bitcoin.

kungfooguru··on Circuit Breaker Design Pattern
Na, there are multiple implementations of this in Erlang, it isn't supervision, https://github.com/klarna/circuit_breaker and https://github.com/jlouis/fuse
kungfooguru··on Let's review Docker
Great, I look forward to it!
kungfooguru··on Let's review Docker
I like it for quickly spawning up fresh places to test during development, or for a fresh environment since so many package managers gems, bundler, npm, etc fuck themselves up and install conflicting packages.

So I find this article to be the same as the hype around Docker, useful information surrounded by hyperbole that ruins it?

I don't need a full VM usually, and being just local dev the security isn't an issue, but used Vagrant before Docker for this.

Is there anything else similar?

kungfooguru··on Memory matters, even in Erlang (2010)

kungfooguru··on Npm install could be dangerous
But do they need to have the issue? Why allow running arbitrary commands during install?

To me it is less about someone purposely including malicious code (since yes, that could be in the project itself not just the install) but that having this willy-nilly form of package managing opens up people to mistakes moving files around that do harm on accident.

And it gets even worse if the package is able to be added to a repo, like npmjs.org, and not have to be accepted after being reviewed.

kungfooguru··on Notepad ++ hacked for Je Suis Charlie comments(web archive link)
Everyone seems to be missing the point. They list terrible atrocities that don't get even close to the same outcry from the world as the attacks in Paris.
kungfooguru··on Why I Quit OS X – Geoff Wozniak
Damn.

I use a Carbon X1 and have had no issue. Before I've been through other X's and a W.

kungfooguru··on Why I Quit OS X – Geoff Wozniak
Thinkpads work great.
kungfooguru··on Sex and the Industrial Revolution
Nothing about using alternative methods means you can't still do all the abstinence stuff in addition.

I was raised Catholic. The way sex is viewed, and the idea of Mary being a virgin until death (somehow ignoring Jesus having multiple brothers and sisters...) being added hundreds of years later and requiring celibacy shows a very odd obsession with sex.

Not to mention the known history of purposely inventing rules to benefit the Church. Priests children before they were no longer allowed to marry and have sex became Church property.
