kul··on Tagstand (YC S11) Greases The Wheels Of NFC Development
We actually have some: http://www.tagstand.com/collections/all-stickers/products/mi...

I realise it's not clear enough that these are outdoor-proof (i.e. PVC), will change that on the store.

We do customise tags right now for folks and putting logos and QR codes on them is our number 1 feature request - so we'll automate this process on the store in the next 2 weeks or so. Thanks for feedback!

HN folk: The discount code for a free pack is techcrunch4nfc, applicable here: http://www.tagstand.com/collections/all-stickers/products/te...

Based on demand/interest I'll set up a discount code for HN, let me know what products seem the most interesting.

kul··on Yahoo's assumptions in 2006 about Facebook's future
he also cashed out in the series A to make himself wealthy, which made selling early less attractive. With the Yahoo negotiations, there was a price he would have sold at, they just took too long to reach it.
kul··on Ask HN: Would a startup sponsor my visa?
I'd be willing, if you were well qualified.
kul··on The Problem With Silicon Valley Is Itself
Sigh. Another inconsistency. Asking how many users you have is another way of asking what impact you're having.
kul··on My experience in a flotation tank
interesting - I definitely felt like I was floating to the left the most
kul··on Why Groupon Is Poised For Collapse
Very interested to see how this plays out, because there's a faltering consensus around Groupon, and it's getting closer to their IPO.

See: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/jun/10/only-fool-inv...

It reminds me a little of when there were a few dissenting voices claiming the US housing market was due a correction and yet prices kept going up.

cheers Ben. I'll be swinging by the Quid offices soon.

kul··on Startup Visa D.O.A., and Startup America Just a Giant Press Release?
I sent my immigration lawyer a link to http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/14/finally-a-startup-visa-that... about 2 weeks ago and this was his response:

"Kulveer, from his lips to God's ears. Frankly, I don't see it happening...such is the gridlock in Congress, where immigration issues, any immigration issues, even sensible solutions to obvious problems like this one, tend to be held hostage to a mindset of 'once you've secured the southern border, we can talk - until then, don't bring us immigration issues to vote on'. The need is obvious, the solution good, but the environment fractured and hostile to the degree that makes those normal attributes of legislation not enough to see it through. No-one will be more pleased than me if I'm wrong!"

kul··on The City By The Meh: Thoughts On Falling Out Of Love With The Valley
And I was just about to move back. Yes, a lot feels derivative. A lot of people are doing startups again because everyone else is doing one. LA does sound cool, which is where my cofounder currently lives. Perhaps I can persuade him not to move?
kul··on Khan of Khan Academy at TED (video)
This is how we were taught at Oxford. The only problem was, the unmotivated/disorganised students (like myself) often didn't do the reading/studying in our own time and so had to have these extremely painful tutorials one on one with the tutor.

Also, I remember when doing Economic Theory, I spent 40 hours reading/studying in a library per week and still couldn't get my head around some of the advanced math and game theory, and really wish I'd had a teacher to teach me those concepts before the tutorial where we'd go through the problems. It turns out I was lacking knowledge of some mathematical transformations that I hadn't been taught because I didn't specialise in double math when I was 16.

Nevertheless, I favour this form of teaching.

kul··on Harjeet Taggar: Start Fund is bad news for bad investors
I was at YC when Milner and Shpilman arrived. It was about 630pm, we'd just had office hours with PG, and I saw the both of them hanging around discreetly in the lobby.

About 5-10 mins passed and eventually I felt bad and walked over and asked if I could help, to which Shpilman replied, in a thick Russian accent, that he was hear to see Harj. Yuri was keeping himself to himself. I walked over and told Harj they were a couple of ppl waiting to meet him, then went and sat with my cofounder at the end of one of the long tables.

I jokingly said to my cofounder that they must be the DST guys, wanting to invest in YC. I had no idea I was correct, they were very low profile.

I simply love the fact that there are moves towards opening up this data. And, the site works remarkably well (ignoring the downtime after it launched).

kul··on An entrepreneur's perspective on the YC/Yuri Milner deal
Hmm - it's still well worth it in my opinion. I last did YC 4 years ago (W07), and whilst I now have my own network, it could still be much bigger. But anyway, there are many other benefits. The focus of prototype and demo day really increases productivity. Close proximity to the YC partners does wonders for your product development, and of course the YC alumni network is much bigger than when I first did it.
kul··on Jason Calacanis' Take on Google's Algorithm Change
Kudos for this pivot, the video is worth watching. Data driven decision making at its finest.
kul··on [dead]
Unless you are truly prepared to walk away from the offer, you won't receive what you are actually worth. It's scary as hell to do it. But if you turn it down, work hard for another year they make come back with a 5x offer.

Are you strategically valuable to them?

Also, if you've worked for 5 years on it and have an actual business, you should receive at least some up front.

kul··on Advice for YC Applicants: Better Last-Minute than Late
We (Auctomatic W07) applied on a whim back in November 2006. We were in London, had no idea how YC would react to a foreign team, and worse, neither of us could hack back then. I remember discussing with Harj just that week that we really should move to the Valley, but it wasn't really obvious how we should. Harj spent about 10 minutes drafting an application and I spent 30 mins on the train ride home that evening editing it. We had zero expectation that anything would come from it.

We got a call from Jessica that we were admitted for an interview a few days later, and booked a flight for Boston. We were there for less than 24 hours, and I remember Harjeet taking the acceptance call from PG as we were walking through airport security, with the TSA yelling at him "put down your phone! Put down your phone now!". In our excitement, we hadn't arranged a place to stay, or bought a US plug adapter for our laptop for the demo. We woke up extra early that morning to get to Cambridge to buy one, and were early to the interview. (I remember reading that being early was bad, so we did our best to lurk around/stay out of sight til it was our turn).

I distinctly remember the euphoria of being accepted. London back then was a horrible place to run a startup and I ended up writing about the move for the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6355289.stm (which ended up stirring a lot of debate back in the UK and eventually led to the creation of things like SeedCamp).

kul··on When Google Wanted To Sell To Excite For Under $1 Million — And They Passed
What's also interesting to think of is all the other potential multi-billion dollar businesses that do not exist today because of early acquisitions? Delicious? We sold Auctomatic at a time when building on the ebay platform and ecommerce generally was seen as 'dirty' (this was 2007-2008), I often wonder what we could have made of it if we'd stuck with it.
