kubav··on How coronavirus infected my brain: anxiety, the internet, and keeping up to date
Do not watch TV and play computer games too much and stop drinking and using drugs (if you do it). It will make you depressed really fast which is big problem in isolation. Focus on positive things and try to contact your family as much as possible. This is also great opportunity to read or to learn new things like cooking or you can try to do something about current situation - sewing face covers, 3d printing face shields or whatever suits you. And the most important thing is to not pressure yourself too much. If you really are not in the mood to do something just postpone it.

I totally agree with you about the friends. I do not need to meet them often but it has to be in real life. I am not owl so I often wake up in 4am and go to sleep at 8 or 9 pm. It is really funny that when people start to connect to slack I have already worked 3 or 4 hours and I am ready for my "lunch" :-D

I have exactly opposite feeling than you. I usually spent 7-8 hours at work and then do hobbies, visit friends and family and usually spent weekends away from home and computers. Now, I am locked at home and I can't visit anyone and I work way more and spent way more time on computer (at least I live with my girlfriend, so I am not completely alone). I am also way less productive as I am not happy and I am tired all the time from not being able to really relax my brain. Also I cook at home a lot normally so cooking everyday is not that big difference.

I prefer meeting people in real life so chatting and video calls are not enough for me. Many of my friends are not good at tech too so it is sometimes difficult to connect with them. I look forward to go back to my pre-covid life.

kubav··on Austria to make basic face masks compulsory in supermarkets
Doctors in television told us that we should always throw away used medical masks and respirators as they might contain viruses and you are risking infection if you use them again.

It is enough if you do not touch your face and clean your hands at home. It will not go into your body through skin.

Czechia made it mandatory because government made really huge mistakes in first 2 weeks* and they are scared and panicking because health care system is underfunded for long time. There is no reason to wear mask in every public space as everything except centers of big cities is empty during lockdown. It makes sense inside but not in parks and empty streets. It just forces people to waste masks which are not in huge supply globally.

* In February prime minister forbid hospitals to buy face mask and decided that he will buy them centrally and than distribute them to hospitals. In the begining of March when coronavirus appeared in Czech republic he also sent finacial control against face mask importers to ensure that they are not selling anything. He wanted to look as savior of the country but he wasn't able to buy any masks so for 2 weeks there were only 10 000 mask from reserves for the whole country. People started to sew mask at home and partially saved situation. After that prime minister made wearing mask mandatory which in my opinion is mainly PR to make the home made masks look like his own initiative. He also spreads fake news about Germany, Austria and other west European countries saying that they are not responsible and that they just copy Czech measures when it is too late. But in reality his administrative is really struggling without any plan and his main efforts go to PR.

kubav··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
You can make your own "vegetable" even in big cities. Tomatoes and peppers are really easy to grow on window or balcony. You can seed them yourself but much easier is to buy young plants.

I am also using sprouting jar [1]. Just buy any bio quality seeds and you have you own sprouts grown in 4-7 days, Bio quality is important as normal seed are often chemically treated.

I also like garden cress which you can easily plant on paper tissues or cotton wool. It is really delicious with bread and fresh cheese.

It is far from 100% vegetable replacement but it is tasty source of vitamins. Especially home grown tomatoes are way more tasty than those sold in normal groceries because they are picked too early to last longer.

kubav··on New research shows social distancing a must to beat Covid-19
There is really low number of infected people and also low density of people walking outside in Czech republic. I am not sure you can make a lot out of it. I think requiring face covers outside is more panic than reasonable measure.

I live in Prague and when I go outside I meet someone once in few minutes and majority of the people are not wearing face cover despite it is required. Mostly they have it prepared on the neck to put it on when they go inside. One doctor in TV did not recommend extensive usage of face masks as cheap or improvised masks tend to get wet after 20 minutes. This significantly reduces their effectiveness. Risk of being infected outside is really low unless you are in crowded area.

kubav··on Things I Believe About Software Engineering
I found that best way to improve productivity is automating development work as much as possible. 2-4 productive hours a day are enough if you spent it on solving important problems. I have always worked less hours than my colleges with roughly the same amount of work done and the same error rate because they are refusing to change their workflow.
kubav··on Russia blocks ProtonMail
It is quite good but I have found several issues which are annoying and solved by competition.

Protonmail bridge on linux has problem with attachments bigger than 2 MB and it disconnects a lot.

Android app is mediocre at best:

- feels really slow

- shows notifications for emails already read on web

- deleting or moving email to different folder waits for confirmation from backend which is really confusing (you can still see deleted emails but you can't delete them again)

I hope they will work on those UX issues otherwise I really like it.
