kuba-orlik··on Bolt has a cool web interface and they really don't want you to use it
My suspicion is that it's harder to monitor network traffic in an app than it is on the Web, and they want to push as much trackers as possible

Author here. I just don't want to make patching it easier for Bolt
kuba-orlik··on Ask HN: Why is NordVPN changing my router settings?
But why then would it only affect Google's services?
kuba-orlik··on Ask HN: Why is NordVPN changing my router settings?
It's not running DHCP. All my machines in the local network have static IPs and DHCP is disabled. I used to use DHCP on the router. The issue persists independently of DHCP
kuba-orlik··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Don't focus on how much you eat, just what you eat. Eliminate alcohol, sugar, fruit juices from your diet, without exceptions. Sleep well. Don't eat for pleasure, eat to not die
kuba-orlik··on Show HN: Check if your website violates GDPR
As a GDPR auditor, this website just does a very superficial job, and doesn't go anywhere close to deep enough.

It could at least check if third-party cookies are being set without consent, which is a major GDPR red flag

kuba-orlik··on Fake vaccine cards are everywhere. It’s a public health nightmare
Aren't the cards cryptographically signed as the EU ones?

...but what does it have to do with AI?
kuba-orlik··on Console Do Not Track – Proposal for a standard environment variable
I think that this approach kind of dissolves the power of the word "consent"

> plainly and unambiguously expresses LACK OF CONSENT by a user

in GDPR terms, consent can never be assumed. In order to be valid, the consent has to be a result of a conscious, explicit action from the user. Things that are opt-out cannot use "consent" as a legitimizing premise

kuba-orlik··on Phacility is winding down, Phabricator no longer actively maintained
Yeah, I didn't mention self-hostability is a must.

SourceHut is terryfying to junior members

kuba-orlik··on Phacility is winding down, Phabricator no longer actively maintained
What I really like about Phabricator as a review tool:

* keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the changes

* ability to add a comment to multiple lines of code

* ability to suggest changes inline

* comments are saved as I type them, so an accidental tab close saves my work

* comments are submitted in batches when I choose to, not one-by-one after saving each one. Its's sooo useful, because it often happens that I ask a question about some piece of code and upon further reading I find the answer, so I can delete the question before submitting all the comments and the author won't be bothered by it

If anyone knows of a feview tool with similiar set of features, please please let me know :)

When it comes to task management in Phab, I like how the tasks can be arranged in a dependency tree. We have our "todo" view set up so it only shows tasks without dependencies and sorted by prioroty, so the work on the project self-organizes

kuba-orlik··on Show HN: Passwords Fountain – password manager interface as a PWA
I really like that it went in the PWA direction. I wish more apps did that and ditched the whole Android/iOS duopoly
kuba-orlik··on Some ISPs offer YouTube/Netflix/Facebook for free. How do they monitor that?
Yeah, but all traffic from googlevideo.com is uncapped, but traffic from google.com is... how do they know which IPs to block? Youtube has like a ton of them and they probably change from time to time. If it's IP-based, how do they compile a list of IPs that are guaranteed to be youtube video content, but not anything else?
kuba-orlik··on Ask HN: Why Signal Requires Google Services for Notifications?
I've just added a clarification in the comment above
kuba-orlik··on Ask HN: Why Signal Requires Google Services for Notifications?
I guess some clarification is needed. Signal uses Google's notification services. When installing Signal on a device without Google Services, it says that the notifications might be unreliable because of the missing library.

But Telegram notifications work great, without relying on Google's servers, so I can happily use it without being monitored by Google...

Why Signal, a privacy-focused messenger, insists on using google servers?

kuba-orlik··on Ask HN: Please help me recall a certain programmer horror story
Thank you, that's it!
kuba-orlik··on IRC.com Bought by London Trust Media, Pledges an IRC Revival
For me the thing that IRC desperately needs is a set of features that would make it usable on mobile... While constantly switching networks (wifi, 3g etc) it's almost certain I will miss some of the messages. That is a real dealbreaker for me and the reason why we've decided to have an irc->telegram vridge so people can keep up with the conversation on the go.

Spoiler alert: now everybody just uses Telegram
