ktzar··on Show HN: Hacker News client with a twist
I'd just ask for a dark theme based on the browser's preferences.
ktzar··on Ask HN: How do I get fit and healthy as a software engineer?
Podcast + 45' walk in the morning before work. Couch potato to 5k training plan in 3 months while listening to a podcast you enjoy.

Halve your food intake. Eat the same, just half. Don't snack after dinner.

ktzar··on Rethinking Climate Change: The path to 90% emissions reductions by 2035
It's a very interesting thought that the technologies to reach 90% carbon emission reduction are within reach, since they already exist, but will require some readjustments to our lifestyle.
ktzar··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
There's a number of technologies and traits that, if adopted en-masse, would definitely reduce our energy and material consumption and extend the sustainability of our planet.

Stop eating meat, extended warranties in home products and designing goods in a way they can be easily repaired, led bulbs, better insulation for buildings, solar water heaters, heat pumps, bicycles...

We could easily consume a fifth of the resources we use now and be as happy if twenty selected things were banned in the world. But we live in a capitalist world, there's only hope in people taking the initiative.

ktzar··on Modular Homes for Under $50k
There's been similar concepts in Europe for decades: https://www.alucasa.com/viviendas-residenciales
ktzar··on GitHub Copilot
Your 20 year old statically compiled binary still works on Linux, probably.
ktzar··on Universal basic income to be tested in Wales
What is outrageous if that the UK prevents you from getting any benefit of you have any savings. It's basically encouraging you to not save any money.
ktzar··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
China did a harder lockdown than any other country has done. Right from the beginning. Took an immense toll to its economy, right from the beginning. A WHO team was there investigating and gathering information on public health from the beginning.

I'm sorry, but in this case, China is the country who told the rest of the world what to do and the west, with its superiority mentality over the east, ignored it and got a while year economy down the drain.

In my book, conspiracies will always make their way to those who want to believe them.

ktzar··on Heavy social media use associated with lower mental health in adolescents
I wrote a novel that takes place in the near future (2035) and the main character is a 18 year old. I predict that using phones will be banned until you come off age and their technology interaction is restricted to smart watches.

Social media is damaging to adults, I wonder why nobody has put a limit by law to younger people.

ktzar··on Solar2D Game Engine
I used Corona a lot in a startup a few years ago to build prototypes of small games for education and it was a fantastic experience. I even did a quizz game as my wedding present for guests with Corona! I wonder why they stopped trying to monetise it, given how good a product it was, and in the boom of mobile app development.
ktzar··on Aegis Authenticator – Open-source 2FA for Android
I use andOTP, open source and can export and import keys so you can have them backed up.
ktzar··on Show HN: Fourhands is a P2P MIDI jam room for pianists
https://www.multiplayerpiano.com/ is a similar one
ktzar··on Tig – Text-mode interface for Git
Using it for years. Pretty good and it's even included in the latest versions of git for windows (if you can't use something else, as it was my case for a while)
ktzar··on A little bit of plain JavaScript can do a lot
Tiny templating libraries like mustache are ideal for that. https://mustache.github.io/
ktzar··on Gimp 2.10.20
I just wish it got features that were in Photoshop in the early 00s. Adjustment layers, basic effects as part of the layers ...
ktzar··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
How to deal with my kids 7 days a week!
ktzar··on OBS Studio: Open-source software for video recording and live streaming
I tried this a while ago and didn't find the option, is midi supported to trigger scene changes, fadings, etc...?
ktzar··on Unofficial Winamp Web Site
There's is a website that's keeping versions of Winamp, including the one I consider the best 2.95 https://winampheritage.com/download-winamp-player
ktzar··on ScummVM 2.1.0
I wrote a "scumm restructurer" (scummatlas) that takes the games binaries and outputs all the scripts, room data, etc... In a readable form. And the scummvm documentation and source code was invaluable.
ktzar··on Train speed record set between London and Bristol
Europe has had trains travelling at 200mph for three decades https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVE & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TGV Britain is just way behind, and it's gonna stay that way.
ktzar··on Apple Music Web Client
So, Apple is launching an offering on par with Google's seven years later. Is that what we call innovation?
ktzar··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
We stopped using waste bags a while ago for all residues except food waste (for which the council required potato starch bags). We have containers at home where we place the plastic waste, which we rinse if it's too dirty, and clean the container with a hose if it's smelly after dumping it in the council bin we have in the driveway.

It usually requires a bit of thought to stop using 90% of single-use plastic, but my family has found it possible.

ktzar··on Stacking concrete blocks is a surprisingly efficient way to store energy
No way one a single block weights 35 tons. A concrete cubic meter weights 2.4 tons.
ktzar··on Stacking concrete blocks is a surprisingly efficient way to store energy
9.8m/s2 * 120m * 35000kg = 41160000 J = 11.4 kWh

Not convinced. Am I missing how they get to store 20 MWh of energy using gravity?

ktzar··on Energy Saved, Sleep Lost: The Unintended Consequences of LED Lighting
Interestingly, when manipulating a led strip you can see light produced by voltage differences between your hands.
ktzar··on The ASUS Tinker Board is a compelling upgrade from a Raspberry Pi 3 B+
This article compares the tinkerboard with the raspi3+, which bums the ethernet wprformancw by a degree of magnitude.
ktzar··on China Seeks to Repeal Presidential Term Limit
Not all of them. I'm just noting the lack of correlation between limit of mandates and democracy index.
ktzar··on China Seeks to Repeal Presidential Term Limit
Lots of other countries don't impose a limit in this many terms the prime minister of the head of state can be reelected... And some have a higher democracy index than the US, where such a limit is in place.
ktzar··on The Amazon worker: paid £18,000 a year to shift 250 items an hour
The minimum salary in the UK is roughly £12k/year... He's still making 50% more than the lowest paid employees.
ktzar··on Ask HN: UK Startups – Are You Thinking of Leaving the UK Because of Brexit?
I wouldn't consider it now since I'm kind of settled here (house ownership, kids, etc...). Also, the London scene is so international and diverse that I don't think I'd feel at home anywhere else now.
