ktzar··on Rimac Energy: Stationary Energy Storage Technology
Not clear what kind of technology this is using to store energy.
ktzar··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I built a website to track the generation of electricity in Spain since I couldn't find a single page from the official provider that contains all the information I wanted to look at at a glance. https://energy.antizone.site/ It scrapes different pieces of data at different intervals.
ktzar··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
The FCC allows personal FM transmitters to operate with a maximum power output of 250 microvolts per meter at a distance of 3 meters. Other countries are more permissive, so this is not a problem. As long as you don't interfere with anyone and emit in a band that's not used in the area, it's perfectly fine.
ktzar··on Circuit.js – Electronic circuit simulator on the web
This website is just amazing... Had I had this in the early 00s when I was studying electronics... Transistor circuits just make sense. And the number of already-setup examples is great.
ktzar··on Learn Vim (2021)
Good to know it's learnt the same way as in 1998
ktzar··on Ncdu – NCurses Disk Usage
ncdu is one of the most useful tools I've come across to quickly get rid of unneeded files in remote servers. Top program.
ktzar··on Intel plans thousands of job cuts in face of PC slowdown
It only took 2 years after Apple stopped using their chips for all the Macbooks that are shipped around the world.
ktzar··on Stadia died because no one trusts Google
Sporadic gamers who don't have the space or money to have a $400 console permanently using space in their living rooms. I played RDR2 on Stadia for 2 months. Then didn't use it again until I got my next game, a few months later.

I rather pay a bit more for games without the burden of having a console, or a gaming pc to be honest.

It solved a problem for me. Until my kids are not old enough to have a PS (whatever the number is in 6 years) I won't have a console able to run top tier games

ktzar··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Couldn't agree more. The problem in Google started as soon as it went public. Then "Don't be evil" went through the window and it's all a short-sighted vision driven by making as much money as possible for investors and pay dividends.
ktzar··on The quiet cost of family caregiving
When, hopefully in a very long time, you're in your deadbead, you'll be happy you spent time with them and made an impact. You won't regret not using in more projects or longer hours.
ktzar··on The quiet cost of family caregiving
A society that creates people who feel entitled to say they don't owe anything to those who made immense sacrifices for them (even though nobody chooses their relatives), is quite sad.

It's a society so individualistic that deprives one of the main pleasures of human life: making a difference in the lives of those you love.

ktzar··on Quantifying GitHub Copilot’s impact on developer productivity and happiness
Is it the case that the code you wrote with copilot is much more prone to be refactored.? The usage you describe sounds like a lot of repetition and hard to update if any of those requirements (Vuex store for example) change.
ktzar··on Quantifying GitHub Copilot’s impact on developer productivity and happiness
To me it's an added level of attention required, having to be extra careful (as I'd be when reviewing a junior's code) with any code suggestion copilot suggests... even if it's wrong 10% of the time, I need to be on the look for lines that would just cause a bug down the line. Ended up disabling it.
ktzar··on KeePass is the free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager
https://keeweb.info/ is a website that loads a local keepass database (or from something like Google Drive). That's what I use in my Chromebook, reading the same database I keep in sync there, which I also access from Android.
ktzar··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
That's not the case in the European and Southamerican countries I've visited or have acquaintances in. What countries do you have in mind? I'm quite interested.
ktzar··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
The metric system is such a beauty, that it's shocking that is not used everywhere. The fact that a liter of water has a relation with the size of the paper we use is just poetry.
ktzar··on US Drought Monitor
I still prefer ventusky. Nice ux, fast and accurate.
ktzar··on A near 100% renewables grid is well within reach, and with little storage
I wonder how would the results vary if for every MW of renewables there was 100kWh of storage (using flywheels, lipo, thermal rock, gravity, etc...). I really believe a future with 100% renewables is very, very close. Will happen in the 2030s.
ktzar··on Google Timer is gone
It all started to go down when they went public. There's no ethos anymore.
ktzar··on Ask HN: Leaving Germany – where to find quality of life as experienced engineer?
I feel you, but I'd recommend taking a step back, breath in, breath out, look at the government budget, and realise that the plans you may not agree with your government only add up to 1% of those "hard earned taxes".

Somehow, in the era with universal access to raw data discussions seem to never have been so polarised. But I'm afraid that's the same anywhere :-(

I still there's a few places better than Germany to live, even more if you've started a family.

ktzar··on Large-scale ‘sand battery’ goes online in Finland
From other articles, the key is that, if the energy recovery happens during cold months and the residual energy in heat form is used to feed municipal heating networks, efficiency can be up to 90%.
ktzar··on How to set junior employees up for success in remote
Agreed. I've line managed people who have grown immensely during covid. I think the key is understanding the new medium... A remote office where conversations are encouraged to happen in the open and not by DM, is a better environment for juniors to learn than an office where there's closed rooms and knowledge moves in a more hierarchical way.
ktzar··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
Chrome Dev tools allowing to mock a specific URL with a local file or replacing parts of it to point to a localhost mocks service.
ktzar··on Surgery estimated cost $1,300. Then the Bill Came: $229,000
Private medical services are a very profitable business for certain professions that buzz around doctors and nurses. People without knowledge about medicine and whose only interest is a private company's benefit.
ktzar··on Shell to install 100K charge points in the UK by 2030
It should work while you drive, F-Zero style.
ktzar··on Drastic DS Emulator Pulled from Google Play Store
Is there a way to request your money back? I'm surprised Google can just pull an app you've payed for. But well... Ts&Cs you never read.
ktzar··on Include diagrams in your Markdown files with Mermaid
I hope they support the full suite of mermaid diagrams, not just a small subset like they do in Azure DevOps. Which is quite frustrating. My team has to take pngs and keep the source code at the bottom of wiki pages.
ktzar··on UK shops fear gaps on shelves as new Brexit import rules hit
I'm amazed that, one year in, there's still no clear benefit from the new situation. I'm a fervent remainer, but expected to see a few positives in commerce, or at least stop seeing the ridiculous cookie banners on every website...

I'm amazed that there's no widespread feeling of anger with the government and the people who brought us into this.

ktzar··on Amazon Ion – A richly-typed, self-describing, hierarchical serialization format
Is it FIX messages? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_Information_eXchange It's a good idea, extensible (ranges available for banks to implement their own codes), and fast.
ktzar··on Magit, the magical Git interface (2017)
How does not compare to tig? I've been using it for half a decade and there's only like 6 mnemonics you need to memorise to stage single lines, increase the line count context for diffs, etc...
