ktosobcy··on Windows 7 marketshare jumps to nearly 10% as Windows 10 support is about to end
I do consider migrating to Linux but... "ItJustWorks" and even the tiniest change throws him off (like order on tiles in firefox) so I'm waiting for the current machine to die completely ;)
ktosobcy··on Windows 7 marketshare jumps to nearly 10% as Windows 10 support is about to end
I'm fully aware, it was mostly a "shorthand". In general it's harder to attac/access a computer that is not directly exposed to the internet and/or not listening on any port.
ktosobcy··on Windows 7 marketshare jumps to nearly 10% as Windows 10 support is about to end
I still have Windows7 on my fathers computer and it's more than enough for him (Firefox + FreeCell). We are behind NAT and he doesn't open anything except for a couple of pages + has uBlock.

The whole hype around Win10 loosing support is way overblown…

Well, I don't have recent experience with Linux on real hardware since quite a long time but I'm aware that the situation improve significantly to the point where it's mostly no-issue (save for GPU drivers, ekhm) so my hope is same will happen with ARM.
ktosobcy··on Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores
Hmm... that may be true. I just disabled everything in preferences to avoid it completely...
ktosobcy··on Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores
Are there any plans to have similar solution?

Is this the reason, why the Android echosystem is so abysmal when it comes to hardware driver support?

ktosobcy··on Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores
Thanks for the heads up. In general Linux hardware support was for a long time hit-or-miss so I kinda expected that. On the other hand I said that with the hope that the things will improve significantly by the time I will be upgrading the machine (which is still years away; I stayed with previous MBP for 8 years so I still have like 3-5 years to go :D)
ktosobcy··on Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores
I like the rise of ARM… first AMD and then "PC world" followed suite with Snapdragon. With the latest Elite I think that my next machine (after MPB M1, which is still perfectly fine machine in 2025) will be PC laptop with ~Snapdragon (or something similar) with Linux... I'm fedup with Apples more and more stupid changes and limitations :/ (I actually disabled automatic updates to avoid LiquidTahoe!)

For me cool and silent device is more important than raw power, and we are in moment where the CPU is not that important (more so - memory)

> Or, just ban children from the internet, same as gun ownership for 12yo's.

wait... wut? Gun ownership for 12yo's? wtf :D

Though the idea of "internet only for adults" is not that bad IMHO. Yes, internet is (well, at least was advertised as) infinite-resource-of-knowledge but we know how it turned out - IMHO minority of underage use it to spend hours reading wikipedia and instead spend hours glued to crap like tiktok (though crap like that should be banned altogether as well :D)

ktosobcy··on Kagi News
Well... thanks to walled-garden policy from google whole web decided to erect walls instead of providing neat RSS. Though all websites I care about have RSS and if some doesn't I contact the admin and they add it…
ktosobcy··on Kagi News
Why? I do use it and can't imagine following anything without it... And I keep hoping that it will come back and replace absolutely terrible schizophrenic feeds from meta/x/etc

Old but possibly relevant: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/dangerous-does-internet-adver...

at any rate - not only context aware ads would be better privacy-wise but also probably would be way more lightweight…

ktosobcy··on Handy – Free open-source speech-to-text app written in Rust
I'm not sure if it's purely down to "hype".

For me I do tend to prefer apps written in rust/go(/c/etc-copiled) as they are usually less problematic to install (quie often single binary; less headache compared to python stuff for example) and most of the time less resource hungry (anything JS/electron based)... in the end "convenient shortcut to convey aforementioned benefits" :)

ktosobcy··on Python developers are embracing type hints
I liked python in my early days because it felt simple and easy and when I tried other languages having to deal with types felt so annoying... but then I grew and had to work with bigger codebases and guess what - having types (and static type checking during compilatin) helps A LOT... :)
ktosobcy··on Python developers are embracing type hints
Well, we do coalesce on certain things... some static type languages are dropping type requirements (Java and `var` in certain places) :D

ktosobcy··on Britain to introduce compulsory digital ID for workers
> Since being forced into globalisation

You mean the time when the UK concquered the whole world and formed "The empire on which the sun never sets"? Yeees... UK was forced into globalization xD

Alas, any country where "doing anything unless it's forbidden" results in a clusterf* that the USA is today, and it has nothing to do with trust or being "civilized"

As for breaches - you are aware that the civilized society can have national IDs - plastic one, issued by the state that are used for... well... IDentification that don't require uber-surviliance and centralizing data worse than in China? Just because UK does something stupid (and it's on a record roll past decades) doesn't mean that the concept of ID is wrong... For example in Poland and in Spain you can easily get doctors appointment just by showing up and waving your ID…

ktosobcy··on Britain to introduce compulsory digital ID for workers
UK's (and USA's) aversion to state ID is quite amusing... and then solving everything that not-having-national-ID causes requires absurd solutions... but hey "ID is the worst thing ever"

It may be 'off-by-default'... for now. It simply rubs me the wrong way.

> Weird how judgy people are about *free* passion-project software that has zero costs associated... almost like there's no room to be upset about it, but maybe I just mind my own business.

Well, I'm donaiting montly for a couple of years and at this point I guess it accumulated to a non-insignificant ammount so while it's FOSS and I'm not explicitly paying for it so it's not entirely free for me in the grand scheme of things ;)

ktosobcy··on Traefik's 10-year anniversary
Quite a bold claim there about being "standard" :D

At one point I was using nginx for my local RPi deployment handling of various services with docker-compose but ultimatelly switched to Caddy and it made everything so simple :)

ktosobcy··on PostgreSQL 18 Released
Well, yeah. But virtually all other software can peroform the data upgrad with single/new binary and only PostgreSQL requires old binaries to be available to run `pg_upgrade`...
ktosobcy··on PostgreSQL 18 Released
I'm fully aware why it's an issue with official image. But even with debian (or any other "packaging") there are hoops to be hopped through due to said missing upgrade handling which IMHO is very annoying.

They do handle minor versions upgrade so the code handling upgrading is there but devs seems to be quite adamant against adding major version upgrade. I (well, a lot of people judging from votes and comments in https://github.com/docker-library/postgres/issues/37 and stars in https://github.com/tianon/docker-postgres-upgrade) would love that, and only between subsequent version would be more than enough…

ktosobcy··on This month in Servo: variable fonts, network tools, SVG
Would be funny if Mozilla/Firefox would adopt Servo down the line :D
ktosobcy··on PostgreSQL 18 Released
Eh... interesting features, yet docker upgrade is still huge PITA because upgrade between major versions is not supported :/

I love PostgreSQL, but this is just utterly annoying and discouraging to use it…

ktosobcy··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
What's so rude and uncalled for? It's just a statement without steeping to any offensive vocabulary.

And it's kidna funny that you are offended by it while you outright dismissed my comment with your "all knowing": "Unless you enter everyone's home to take an inventory of their devices, it stands to reason that you're going to see more smartphones than anything else by just looking around." - wouldn't you say that was offensive as well? But no - you feel entitled to this opinion and see nothing wrong with such silly rebutal :D

ktosobcy··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
Are they?

Again - this is only just one of the possible implementations of https://ageverification.dev/Technical%20Specification/archit...

It's possible to have others but as POC they are focusing on covering the biggest chunk of the population…
