kthxbye123··on The Distinguished Medieval Investigators
Is there a reason we can't say “penis” in HN titles?
kthxbye123··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
290 of which are “how do we solve the Jewish Problem”
kthxbye123··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
So true. When someone gets mad at me online for saying that black people have genetically bad IQs or that it’s ok to run over protestors with my car, that’s the dark hand of the CIA at work.
kthxbye123··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
The US has plenty of other intelligence agencies.
kthxbye123··on Twitter, Responsibility, and Accountability
The DNI is a political appointee and this one in particular is highly politicized, his statements are partisan political statements intended to support the President and the GOP and are not necessarily representative of the views and analyses of career intelligence officers.
kthxbye123··on A Stoic Philosopher in a Hanoi Prison: I am the captain of my soul
OP posted a dumb motivational essay based on a bullshit hagiography of a guy whose day job was to mass murder civilians. If you’re cool with that then your moral framework has a screw loose, sorry.
kthxbye123··on A Stoic Philosopher in a Hanoi Prison: I am the captain of my soul
I'm more interested in hearing about the philosophy which comforted Vietnamese civilians who had to live their lives under constant American terror-bombing than I am in hearing about the philosophy which comforted the bombers.
kthxbye123··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
It is nearly impossible for a public figure to win a libel suit in the US.
kthxbye123··on Jack: Our communication around our actions on the @nypost article was not great
The NY Post story included personally identifiable information like addresses, e-mail addresses, SSN numbers, etc. The NYTimes story did not contain any such PII. Twitter did not block discussion of the NY Post story, and did not block stories about the contents of the emails that did not contain PII.

The number of people who have completely bought the right-wing talking points around this story hook, line, and sinker - without bothering to exercise an ounce of critical thought or independently seek out any of the facts - is absolutely astonishing.

"120 years long history of investigative journalism"

I should have known I was being trolled; my fault for taking the bait.

kthxbye123··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
This is a joke, right? The Daily Mail?
kthxbye123··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
No, it's universally considered a far-right tabloid, similar to the Daily Mail or the Sun in the UK.
kthxbye123··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
The provenance of the files is not questioned by far-right political operatives like Sean Davis who are pushing this story in the first place, but to anybody with half a brain cell and an ounce of skepticism the whole story stinks. Just listen to this interview with the owner of the repair shop these files purportedly came from, who changes his story about a half-dozen times in the span of sixty minutes:

https://www.thedailybeast.com/man-who-reportedly-gave-hunter...

It's not even clear that it was Hunter who dropped off the laptops in the first place!

kthxbye123··on Facebook Communications Chief: We are reducing distribution of anti-Biden posts
the top policy guy at Facebook is a lifelong Republican political operative
kthxbye123··on Coinbase offers exit package for employees not comfortable with its mission
I think quite the opposite. We give far, far too much cultural deference to megalomaniacal executives and petty business tyrants; it’s refreshing to see them called out on their bullshit. More refreshing would be seeing more CEOs, founders, and VCs forced to cede control to employees, but I’ll take what we can get.
kthxbye123··on Freeman Dyson’s letters offer another glimpse of genius
There are no Dyson spheres or nuclear powered spaceships, but there are a hell of a lot of climate deniers. If we’re weighing what part of his legacy, the part that had a negative effect on a very real crisis of human suffering is going to weigh heavier than some cool thought experiments that only showed up in scifi
kthxbye123··on Bill Gates made his fortune through sheer robber-baronry
Buffet is just as much a predatory monopolist as any of them, with the added bonus of having made some of his billions by ruthlessly squeezing the working poor through exploitative mobile-home rentals and foreclosures. Just because his homey Omaha brand fools the rubes doesn't mean he wouldn't push your grandmother off a bridge for a nickel.
kthxbye123··on U.S. to block cotton, tomato product imports from Xinjiang over forced labor
So much so that we fought a titanic war with hundreds of thousands if not millions of casualties to end it!
kthxbye123··on Order of magnitude estimate of Beirut explosion at 3 kilotons of TNT
Just as an FYI, this account is a well known fake persona run by MEK cultists in Albania, not really a great source of info- note that it immediately began boosting a completely unsubstantiated theory that the explosion was caused by a depot of Iranian munitions.
kthxbye123··on We quit our jobs to build a cabin
It's extremely hard. Proenneke was a talented craftsman who had spent his whole life working as a mechanic and carpenter. He wasn't an office-bound DIY enthusiast.
kthxbye123··on Robinhood has lured young traders, sometimes with devastating results
Actually they’re advocating for protecting people from predatory corporations that adversarially target and exploit their customers with weaponized psychology, bit of a difference

In a democracy, the people (and their legitimately elected representatives) are also allowed to structure markets and decide on what business practices are and are not allowed

kthxbye123··on How “Starship Troopers” Aligns with Our Moment of American Defeat
I guess we have different definitions of “bad” (which you seem to be defining more as “not appreciated in its own time”), because I think it is a genuinely good movie with a successfully realized artistic vision, rather than a piece of empty but entertaining schlock. It’s campy because the aesthetics of fascism that it’s satirizing are campy.
kthxbye123··on How “Starship Troopers” Aligns with Our Moment of American Defeat
There are plenty of people who (correctly, I think) consider the movie to be superior to the book (as both entertainment and as a genuine artistic accomplishment). You may be catching flak from them.
kthxbye123··on The U.S. can now set its own rates for mail from China and other countries
Nah, it sounds like OP was basically a ripoff artist- not smarter or more industrious, just more amoral. Pretty scummy way to make a living, hopefully it’s not viable from now on.
kthxbye123··on Facebook’s dominance is built on anti-competitive behavior
There’s over a hundred and twenty years of antitrust enforcement in this country. Why does HN insist on reinventing antitrust law from their own intuition about what “anti-competitive” means?
kthxbye123··on MSU Vice President of research & innovation Steve Hsu has been forced to resign
There are an incredible number of people on HN and in Silicon Valley who clearly believe that black people are on average genetically inferior to whites and Asians and also think they're being incredibly clever when they tap-dance around that core belief. Maybe now some of them will at least do the rest of us the courtesy of saying it outright.
kthxbye123··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
Not if your conception of the nation only includes white people...
kthxbye123··on Justice Department to propose limiting internet firms’ Section 230 protections
This is absolute incoherent nonsense. Are TV networks that air press conferences giving 'untracked political contributions'? Is a network that chooses not to air a particular speech or event giving an 'untracked contribution' in the form of 'political censorship'?
kthxbye123··on Facebook limits spread of 'Boogaloo' groups amid protests
Just to be clear about your argument here - you are suggesting that Facebook changing its recommendation algorithm to not suggest that people join groups run by white supremacist paramilitaries advocating for a second civil war is akin to systemic racism?
kthxbye123··on The Unmarked Federal Agents Occupying Washington, D.C
The cosplayers and the unmarked paramilitaries are on the same side.

When the NRA and their allies advocate for an armed citizenry, they emphatically don’t mean “our political enemies”
