ktallett··on Sand battery: Finland's answer to a renewable energy headache
This seems of particular use in countries with extreme winter conditions such as Russia, Canada, etc. I would like to see this catching on for those with communal heating systems which are common all over Russia and Eastern Europe/Central Asia.
ktallett··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
This is unrelated to Google's apps being integrated and working together which should not be affected by that.
ktallett··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
The issue is that app developers can not offer alternatives to this, not that Google's apps only favour their own services. This is the exact same issue Japan had with Apple. Both were fair rulings. Forcing developers to use services is just removing free competition.
ktallett··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
This. Aka a Qubes style isolated image.
ktallett··on MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad
I'm not exclusively suggesting the US market. I'm suggesting the rest of the world where you can get a contract and sell in bulk to national healthcare. Whilst I do agree that there are a few companies like this, the negative is discovery and these being unavailable to people who are tech illiterate or unable to set it up which in this case is a significant number. Considering how useful it could be for people with significant paralysis, having a device that your health are provider can't recommend, aid you with, etc would be infuriating.
ktallett··on JetZero
Wandering can be slower paced, or to places that are magical but nearer and connected via alternative to planes. Also we can avoid using planes for less important things, like business meetings etc.
ktallett··on MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad
The price seems high for straight to end user sales avoiding the medical regulations needed for use in medical settings. I'm curious why that is and also why you wouldn't design with iso accreditation in mind and get approval. That opens up the market far more.
ktallett··on MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad
They definitely need to follow regulations as otherwise this misses the entire market that it's aiming at. You are far better of incorporating this into medical settings than just people with disabilities and disposable income.
ktallett··on MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad
But they also don't have iso accreditation for medical use.
ktallett··on Becoming a Research Engineer at a Big LLM Lab
I'm slightly questioning the term "guide". Basically you have said become a possibly useful researcher in Machine Learning by learning about machine learning, and because Machine Learning takes place on computers it's useful to know how they work too.

This is the equivalent of me saying, if you want to join me researching quantum computing. You need to learn about the quantum and then the computing. Broadly at first then choose a niche.

It's a bit, well obviously.

ktallett··on I Stopped “Creating Content”
Ethical all depends on if what you are doing is really you. Whether you are being you. The same way with any creative pursuit. There is a significant difference between creativity for creativities sake and creativity marketed to exploit.
ktallett··on I Stopped “Creating Content”
You don't need to do that as an activity. You can earn money doing something more useful.
ktallett··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
You forgot terrorists on your usual list of reasons e2e is bad. Technology will always be used for bad and good, but there are far more people using it for good than bad.
ktallett··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
Law enforcement don't have a legal right to access all that people do, say, and think. They are there to investigate and present evidence to court incase of illegal activity, nothing more.
ktallett··on Show HN: A modern port of Linux to a ten-year-old QWERTY phone
The fact this phone is 15 years old and has seen minimal obvious replacements is such a shame. I love this work!
ktallett··on The lost joy of music piracy
Piracy has been proven in court to not be stealing. I'm using the legal definition of stealing.
ktallett··on The lost joy of music piracy
Haha! Yes exactly! I had a music taste that was primarily based around TV (such as MTV), family and friends exposure, and old cassettes and CDs I bought in charity shops (thrift stores). Blogspot allowed me to find new artists in genres I already loved such as grunge. Both my love for Green River and Alice in Chains came from a blogspot. There are still a few dedicated bloggers out there. One in particular that allows you to do deep dives into punk from many countries.
ktallett··on The lost joy of music piracy
You can't steal something unless there is ownership of it by the other person. There has to be loss for it to be stolen. Stealing isn't ok, but downloading music or movies without paying isn't stealing.
ktallett··on OpenAI loses trademark dispute at EU court
They should have to change their name to not misell their product.
ktallett··on The lost joy of music piracy
I've tried all the streaming services, I've regularly bought physical copies of music even in recent years, but nothing has exposed me to such a wide range of music and such a range of artists as a well curated blogspot. Whether that be a wide range of excellent bootlegs or music that has not been moved from cassette to digital, it just provides me with so much more joy. Especially easy to do now iPods are back in vogue
ktallett··on The lost joy of music piracy
Is it stealing if when I buy digital I don't own it?
ktallett··on Harman and Dr. Sean Olive are reshaping headphone sound (2025)
Is there a limit to how good a sound people can appreciate? Like the guy who has his own electric supply, can he really hear the difference or is he tricking himself mentally into believing there is a difference?
ktallett··on OpenPrinter
It's such a good idea as a project and by the looks of things well executed. I also feel the style of the printer and the fact it can be a roll of paper will lead to interesting project ideas.
ktallett··on Mouse: Precision Editing Tools for AI Coding Agents
As others have said, text editing isn't patentable, and this does not have anything that is patent worthy. However I suspect this is more someone who has no clue what the difference between patent, copyright, and IP is. Was this whole thing vibe coded btw?
ktallett··on I Type Holes in Keyboard Covers – This One Survived
It is annoying mac don't sell Dvorak or Neo2 layouts now.
ktallett··on I Type Holes in Keyboard Covers – This One Survived
I always thought keyboard covers on macs were not realistic unless removed everytime as there is not enough of a gap between screen and keyboard. However, I found on macs the keys get damaged very easily from oils, far more so than other laptops. I see the need for one, but it does damage the typing experience somewhat.
ktallett··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
High quality doesn't just mean production values, it can relate to any aspect of the video. High quality could simply reflect the quality of content. I would much prefer if PeerTube became a far easier to browse version of Archive along with creators producing items of creative and knowledge value. We don't need to replace YouTube as it likely can't be replaced. However switching a significant number away with a different approach to what is hosted there would be a positive.
ktallett··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
Your issue is assuming that this is trying to replace YouTube for those who wish to try and make money from this. I suspect this is much more closer to a Google videos or YouTube back in the day which was pretty much just random videos, plus lots of conferences on there (which don't get enough views to monetize). This can easily replace that and is something I would support. YouTube hasn't always been monetising and it is good if we have a competitor against it.
ktallett··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
They won't be releasing new Blu Rays for decades. Outside of collectors, why would they? Unless there is a hidden market for the discs elsewhere it's not worth it
ktallett··on Free the Icons
A Framework isn't loud at all. I regularly do simulations on mine and it works perfectly without noise.

I think if you just compare cost then yes the Mac is a good deal but there is more than cost that matters. I think flexibility, reparibility and so on matter.
