ktallett··on How Blackwing Pencils are Made [video]
They aren't the same since they were brought back.
ktallett··on Is Europe safer than America?
Yes. This doesn't need an article. Everyone knows the truth here.Europe isn't perfect and it isn't one country so it's impossible to really compare but....

Firstly, this assumption that many people are being stabbed for a phone in city centres is just not based on reality or actual statistics in Europe. It just doesn't happen quite as much as the US media seem to propogate to their populace in the hope that the average dumb US citizen will believe they are in the best country in the world still.

Whilst mass shootings happen. It's in the singular per year. Not singular per week. The fact classrooms are designed with school shooters in mind tells you all you need to know.

The percentage of people murdered in the US (not suicide, but murder) is higher.

Now obviously I will get the, bad guys will still get guns. Even though, every single country that has gun laws prove that they have far less deaths due to the populace having no guns. In Europe you won't get 10 Dylan's or Eric's able to access guns so easily, to commit school shootings. That's the difference.

Also nowadays you can safely say women aren't as safe considering abortion laws. The same with doctors who treat them. They aren't safe from ridiculous criminal prosecution.

Let's not even get on to the acts of the police in the US on general citizens....

Who even thought of writing this article?

The key thing is these people will get older and no longer be in that age bracket so you are relying on future groups in that age bracket to know this loophole which will be some but far fewer I suspect.
ktallett··on Unions Can Save Tech Workers and Tech Work
This golden egg has a funny smell. You are exclusively focusing on high paying as interesting is found in many careers. Lots of people don't trade rights for cash. Many prefer a comfortable lifestyle that protects their families and life style, whilst allowing them to just do a fair day's work in exchange for pay. It is far better if people don't feel they need to put in endless hours or always have to please someone to avoid getting fired.
ktallett··on Quantego: A Family of Lego Models of IBM Quantum Computers
I was just curious your background to be able to understand the situation from your point of view but you haven't made that easy. There are already military use cases for it in development and existence which is where a lot of the money will continue to come from. It's not an area I personally feel comfortable in but it's there and real.

I'll stop responding now as I was genuinely curious to hear your reasoning and see your sources but you seem unwilling to share either so it is quite hard to have open communication.

ktallett··on Quantego: A Family of Lego Models of IBM Quantum Computers
Firstly I would say I agree with you that there most certainly are major companies that enhance their results. I would be curious to read the paper or proof of the IBM quantum computer issues.

However the readout is always done by a classical computer at the moment. We aren't at the stage where we have an integrated system that can use photonic chip say from start to finish. That's not a sign it's fraudulent, that's just the stage we are at.

Secondly, there are fraudulent claims in every area of research or enhanced claims, that doesn't mean none of the science is valid.

What's your background here?

ktallett··on Quantego: A Family of Lego Models of IBM Quantum Computers
Quantum and Photonic computing functionally works. You can go to many labs and see it in action producing results. As I stated in my original post I think it's a decade plus to get to where it states but that doesn't mean everything is fraud. Because you can't recoqnise that it is functioning and showing progress that doesn't mean it isn't.

Your skepticism is valid to some extent with some implementations but your background knowledge doesn't support your theory and clearly hasn't seen the results first hand (which is understandable of course unless you work in research in that field).

I am very curious why your point of view is expressed in this manner. It feels as if you were in a field that is now recieving less funding due to QC and PC.

It feels as if you are collating all work with any mention of quantum as one which it isn't. Also it feels as if you are assuming quantum computing is exclusively focused on brute force algorithm cryptography cracking which again it isn't. Quantum computing is exclusively any form of computing that utilizes quantum theory to manipulate data. That's not automatically "better" just more effective for certain circumstances.

There are already real world examples of quantum computing methods utilising photons that can perform security jobs that classical computing simply couldn't do especially in relation to photon pairs.

Not snake oil, just engineering and physics.

ktallett··on Quantego: A Family of Lego Models of IBM Quantum Computers
Well yes but quantum computing and silicon photonics are not entirely separate fields. Photonic computing can still enable introduction of algorithms that utilise quantum properties.

I would agree that some claims are lies or misguided, however yes with the right algorithmic processes, these devices can affect current security of cryptography one day. That doesn't mean their work was worthless but like everything, things progress. It's not obsolete, it's been built on.

The industry shouldn't be fabricating claims but the industry that is honest of which there are many, do not need to protect other industries. Fabrication happens in every industry.

Tech is only obsolete if you aren't inventive of how to repurpose it.

ktallett··on Quantego: A Family of Lego Models of IBM Quantum Computers
I would be curious to hear your reasoning behind such a strong view. If you have an email address, happy to hear them privately.

I work in the field to some extent, although more closely on photonic computing, and would agree there is a majority of snake oil in the field. Yet that's the case with any field above a certain size that has recently become the latest buzzword. Just look at AI.

There most certainly are people with valuable contributions in the field, that will eventually change how we are able to analyse the world around us. We are a long way from that but these steps are the start to the end goal in 10's of years from now.

Whether you are considered a "scammer", greatly depends on what side of it. I do feel there are people who are scammers in the field, as well as people who aren't smart enough to realise how unrealistic their plan is, who are then funded by people even less qualified to state how unrealistic the plan is. Basically, a Theranos situation again. Again, this also applies to so many other companies including AI.

ktallett··on Discovery Loop
You can create a research twin that can predict but as you say, it only works once you have a lot of data. Both the data relevant to the experiment it came from (which is rarely published) and the complete failure data (which is almost never published in any form).
ktallett··on Quantego: A Family of Lego Models of IBM Quantum Computers
These are all just models of the cryostats and classical computer interfaces used to cool and read out from the quantum computing devices. These are not the quantum computing devices themselves.

(Before anyone starts. Yes, the read out is essential, but room temperature devices are coming to the forefront now so no the cryostat is not a compulsory part of the QC setup.)

I saw a tour take place at my facility whereby a man pointed at an empty cryostat and said "Wow, a quantum computer". None of us had the heart to tell him otherwise.

ktallett··on 1 in 4 people in Japan believes AI could replace friends and family: poll
Those are all distractions being done together. I'm very pleased you don't feel lonely but many millions in Japan do. Hence such a high rate of suicide, such a high rate of isolation, such a high rate of people who do have virtual connections over real world connections. It's partially as the need to be who they are can not be met by such a restrictive society. They can't find people who will be open with them. People who will be there at your lowest, back you no matter how you want to live, back you when you move outside of the norms. You are likely aided by not being born in Japan to two Japanese parents of Japanese heritage etc. The same expectations are not set on anyone from outside of Japan. But those expectations induce a desire to find a distraction and just push down feelings that you should express and feel supported by.

It isn't ever quite that simple. It also depends whether that person only used information that is publicly available to deduce how to do it at the new company.

ktallett··on 1 in 4 people in Japan believes AI could replace friends and family: poll
This is sad but not remotely shocking. Japan overall is a very lonely society based around distractions, whether that's the bright lights, work, pachinko, mobile games, whatever it may be. So many already replace friends with pretend people such as anime characters. The commoness of people who have huge pillows representing their favourite character that for them is a bedtime friend, that they talk to is far too common.

This isn't made easier for those who do have family and friends. They have minimal physical connections day to day due to societal rules that are arbitrarily restrictive and based in long should have been abandoned historical expectations.

Spain have a far more youthful side, who can easily win again. France will come back, as will England. Argentina have few players coming through and many stars will have retired by the next tournament, even youthful Alvarez will be 30 next time out.
ktallett··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
The FA's worldwide don't need FIFA, they can set up a new world tournament. You will get a lot of poor nations who stick with FIFA for the cash but at the end of the day without European teams the world cup and FIFA will have minimal value. 5 of the last 6 world cup winners were european and it will only get more biased towards Europe. Argentina post Messi have no chance, and Brazil are the furthest away from winning than they ever have been.

You can only seperate the message from the messenger when you don't try to hold the higher ground or compare. Saudi Arabia doesn't need to be mentioned in the original message.

You can simply say, Canada has an issue with this. France has an issue with this.

It is the same when you often see on forums, "It is better in Japan". It isn't a relevant comment and therefore invokes comparison.

Whatever your view on AI and data usage, this is not an acceptable reason to arrest someone. I do view that we are taking just brute force too far, we need to pause and reconsider energy usage and waste and refocus on the algorithms to be more efficient first. Our focus should not just be the Jeremy Clarkson method of more power.
