ktallett··on $83B Wasted: Showing up at the airport 3 hours before your flight
Ugh, this cost to the economy calculation because you aren't at your desk is not accurate. There is no way the loss is simply equivalent to your rough hourly rate for your time. There is no way to quantify whether for this or for bank holidays how much money was lost from the economy. Especially when salaried employees can still do their tasks for the week or month with or without that extra day.
ktallett··on ThinkPad designer David Hill on unreleased models
Ah yes! My mistake. I didn't realise that was what that was called. I did have one of those for a little while as a lab computer as it beat the size requirements allowed into the lab. I mean it was old for it's time when I used it but plugged in, it would do text files and csv.

Too costly to have two LEDs? I question if that is the case.

I question why the butterfly keyboard wouldn't be needed once screens were larger. I use a MNT Reform and a mechanical keyboard is still vastly superior.
ktallett··on 'Communities' of extreme life seen for first time in deep ocean
Why do we send humans to those depths rather than a camera? I assume signal to control the camera is hard at those depths but that is the only reason I can imagine.
ktallett··on Terence Tao on the suspension of UCLA grants
I imagine many go on to be analysts of markets
ktallett··on Terence Tao on the suspension of UCLA grants
Please provide the proof to back this up. Like I wasn't willing to believe Trump without proof when he stated the previous election was stolen, I won't become a hypocrite and just believe it on Trump's win.
ktallett··on Terence Tao on the suspension of UCLA grants
Whilst I would imagine that to be the case, you should at the start of a phd have more than one professor across the many you have come into contact with that is willing to vouch for both your mathematical ability and your personality and ability to fit in a team.

I don't think anyone should get in just on the relation to Tao, likewise it is also important that they move to a program that they have an interest in.

I do hope those students find an appropriate course for themselves as this must be extremely challenging for them both regarding their career and also mentally and socially.

ktallett··on Write "Freehold" Software
Polytopia sells both skins and extra content as dlc so it's rightfully not included. Just as I expect SC2 is not included for the same reason. However I would agree, I feel freehold should go along with drm free
ktallett··on Researchers value null results, but struggle to publish them
Null means something doesn't exist and proving something doesn't exist can at times especially in certain sciences be as valuable as proving something does exist. Especially if it stops the rest of the field chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
ktallett··on Write "Freehold" Software
I completely agree with the "freehold" principle, and it's how I exclusively release any of my work however how we get back there for the majority I just don't know. The only apps I know that are a success in the modern day that are using that model is Goodnotes that saves repurchase for significant updates which I think is acceptable, and Affinity design apps. I sense many feel their business model is better suited to subscriptions and the lapsed subscription fee is also valuable. It's likely a societal change whereby many are not happy to spend significant upfront costs on software now. Even a small amount on an app can be thought of as too much.
ktallett··on California can't require background checks to buy ammunition, appeals court rule
Not every crime is committed by a defined criminal, many are committed by those committing a crime for the first time. Now that is so easy due to the accesibility of the tools. Firearms being so readily available will cause regular citizens to occasionally use them to harm others, it doesn't mean they have been obtained illegally.

Every other 1st world country has proven prohibition does mean a significantly decrease risk of being shot. That is in per 100,000 people, therefore number of citizens does not matter.

ktallett··on California can't require background checks to buy ammunition, appeals court rule
Is it? In every other measurable statistic it is clearly not looking out for the wellbeing of citizens. The sheer number of crimes that end in death in comparison with other 1st world countries is simply off the charts.

Why does the constitution in the US hold so much sway over the safety and wellbeing of the population?
ktallett··on Apple set to stave off daily fines, EU to accept App Store changes, sources say
I did used to write software professionally and no, we traditionally charged per update but each update was significant and worthwhile. Any bugs or safety issues were of course fixed for free. We never moved to the subscription model which has in my view instigated these methods. I am not of the view each iOS update is significant. Now I occasionally have to write software for my current role but it isn't the main job and I release it for free as it is quite niche and I would prefer it is out there.
ktallett··on Mathematics for Computer Science (2024)
I would say that you need to start at a lower level when self learning with a simpler resource. Something like Openstax. People get far too obsessed with the name attached to a resource than whether it is the right method of learning.
ktallett··on Apple set to stave off daily fines, EU to accept App Store changes, sources say
Are you suggesting the cost of an iPhone is not able to cover the minimal updates made to the phone over the lifetime of it? How do the justify the cost of the Mac App Store fees? When they put zero effort in to it?
ktallett··on Science confirms what we all suspected: Four-day weeks rule
More work doesn't need to be done, the same amount needs to be done in 4 days as in 5. Saying this, some careers, including my own, the more tired I am and less rested mentally and physically, the slower work gets done, to the point where it's not feasible to do it sometimes as it's very much thinking based and tiredness can hamper that greatly. Therefore more rest allows me to actually overall be more productive over the course of a working week.

How is replacing a failing system with a unverified system sensible?
ktallett··on Science confirms what we all suspected: Four-day weeks rule
If Science can make those capitalist bosses accept this as fact, and actually introduce it, that would be a greater achievement.
ktallett··on Tiny Code Reader: a $7 QR code sensor
Would you genuinely want this? I personally can't see why. Perhaps at conventions it could be useful as it's hard to visit every table.
ktallett··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
IMO questions and Andrew Wiles solving Fermat's last theorem are two vastly different things. One is far harder than the other and the effort he put in and thinking needed is something very few can do. He also did some other fascinating work that I couldn't hope to understand fully. There is a gulf between FLT and IMO types of proofs.
ktallett··on Apple set to stave off daily fines, EU to accept App Store changes, sources say
Apple gets payment when people buy their phones, are you suggesting that the cost of those things are not built into that cost? Especially considering how much they make on certain things such as storage increases?
ktallett··on Biggest 4-day work week trial finds workers are happier, feel just as productive
It states they didn't change the amount of work they did. They simply compressed 5 days into 4 which is doable if you cut out the time sinks. Plus as stated here more rested workers can work harder on the days they are at work.
ktallett··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025

I mean IMO training, as yes I agree you wouldn't be able to do this without a complete Math knowledge.
ktallett··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
I think honestly it's probably different experiences and skillsets. I find these sort of things doable bar dumb mistakes by myself, yet there will be other things I'll get stressed and not be able to do for ages (some lab skills no matter the number of times I do them and some physical equation derivations that I regularly muck up). I maybe sometimes assume that what comes easy for me, comes easy for all, and what I struggle with, everyone struggles with and that's probably not always the case. Likewise I did similar tasks as a teen in school and assume that is possibly the case for many academically bright so to speak but perhaps isn't so that probably helped me learn some tricks that I may not have otherwise. But as you say I do feel that you can learn the tricks and learn how to do them, even in older age (academically speaking) if you have the time and the patience and the right guide.
ktallett··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
I'm aware you believe they are impossible tasks unless you have specific training, I happen to disagree with that.
ktallett··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
I sense we may just have a different experience related to colleagues skill sets as I can think of 5 people I could send some questions too and I know they would do them just fine. Infact we often have done similar problems on a free afternoon and I often do similar on flights as a way to pass the time and improve my focus (my issue isn't my talent/understanding at maths, it's my ability to concentrate). I don't disagree that some level of training is needed but these questions aren't unique, nor impossible, especially as said training does exist and LLM's can access said examples. LLM's also have brute force which is a significant help with these type of issues. One particular point is that Math of all the STEM topics to try and focus on probably is the best documented alongside CS.
