ktallett··on Show HN: Is Hormuz open yet?
Not the first time they couldn't keep to a ceasefire for even a day, let alone 24 hours. Exactly the same as what happened with Palestine last year as well.
ktallett··on Computational Physics (2nd Edition)
I did a few courses across academic years that were based around this book and it's very handy skills to learn. Whilst perhaps not in the moment, it's a good introduction to implementing functions and equations, before you lead on to the next steps of specific functions and methods of analysis alongside hpc with parallelization.
ktallett··on Why mathematicians are boycotting their biggest conference
Huh? This is primarily because travelling to the US is not worth the risk right now.
ktallett··on He suddenly couldn't speak in space. NASA astronaut says his medical scare remai
Not to be ageist but is this not a slight risk from using astronauts who are older in age due to their important experience. It does feel as if we need to find a route to fast track at least some of the crew if we are to expand a program to far more expeditions.
ktallett··on Len Deighton, spy novelist and author of The Ipcress File, dies aged 97
His books have often kept me company on long flights, so this is very sad. A great author that never sold out whilst always being a real page turner.
ktallett··on MacBook Air with M5
It doesn't feel as sturdy, but I have actually had less issues with it in the same amount of time, and each one I have been able to fix myself cheapily and easily. The Macbook does feel sturdy, but it is deceptive as one issue means the whole laptop is almost needing to be replaced which is not strong in reality.
ktallett··on Hisense TVs add unskippable startup ads before live TV
Another brand I will not buy. What has become of so many companies selling out? Apple, Lenovo, Hisense, and so on.
ktallett··on MacBook Air with M5
Primitive in what sense though? As I have had one for longer than my Macbook lasted in the same situation, plus it is upgradeable as and when I choose. I loved apple of old, and the classic apple that was the framework of it's time regarding upgradeability, has long gone.
ktallett··on Is particle physics dead, dying, or just hard?
Is it more that even the most dedicated and passionate researchers have to frame their interests in a way that will get funding? Particle Physics right now is not the thing those with the cash will fund right now. AI and QC is the focus.
ktallett··on Uber Found Liable in Rape by Driver, Setting Stage for Cases
Drivers are only independent contractors due to poor employment policy from Uber. They work for Uber, therefore Uber do have a duty of care to the users of their service. Now some may say that they only provide the platform similar to Silkroad, however the key difference is that the drivers are representing Uber, in Silkroad's case the sellers were not representing silkroad.

If Uber wish to be seperate from those drivers, they need to provide the customer the chance to choose the driver, and have an appropriate review system.

ktallett··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
As in the total opposite meaning?
ktallett··on Vibe coding kills open source
I think vibe coding would greatly struggle with large open source projects unless your planning was exceptional and your comments on optimal coding style was exceptional, however...... For those small open source tools that many of us use daily and find invaluable, I actually think vibe coding is ideal for that. It can make a functional version quickly and you can iterate and improve it, and feel no loss for making it free to use.

I was very sceptical but I will admit I think vibe coding has a place in society, just what it is yet is still to be determined. It can't help most for sure but it can help some in some situations.

ktallett··on Zotero 8
I'm delighted it's now become available on ARM as I now can have it on my lab computer (Pi) and the Pocket Reform that I use day to day. I still need to come up with an optimal folder system for it though.
ktallett··on 3D printing my laptop ergonomic setup
It depends what you are creating but for all I do Openscad (3d printed components in the lab) is very usable.
ktallett··on IKEA for Software
That isn't ikea for software. That is as if Ikea only made chairs, and primarily focused on one type of chair, like wingbacks.
ktallett··on IKEA for Software
Hypercard is the IKEA for software.
ktallett··on Show HN: OpenWork – An open-source alternative to Claude Cowork
What is the license?
ktallett··on AI Can't Touch These Skilled Trade Jobs. If Only Enough Humans Would Fill Them
If only the apprenticeships to do them paid well enough. Perhaps a subsidy to maintain potentially forgotten crafts and skills.

Reading Craft land by James Fox, there are many skills we need but we can't seem to fund to maintain.

ktallett··on Ask HN: Quantum Computation, Computers and Programming
Potentially my only opportunity to say thank you for your efforts in creating your textbook, so thank you. It helped me get to the position I am today as an academic researcher in QC although I focus on Photonics.
ktallett··on When hardware goes end-of-life, companies need to open-source the software
This is where I hope EU do their magic
ktallett··on Why we don’t use AI
I didn't either but I have now realised yes it uses a lot of energy and yes it can be a total waste of energy, but if you are doing good with it, then it is worth the cost.

I have decided I can only use AI that has a benefit to society at all. Say lower energy use apps for eink devices.

ktallett··on Ask HN: Quantum Computation, Computers and Programming
It does! They also still have all their summer schools up that you can go through step by step. Although I must promote Strawberry fields as I believe photonic integrated systems really is the better option.
ktallett··on Ask HN: Quantum Computation, Computers and Programming
QC Researcher here!

1/ Digital and analog - where digital equals qubits and analog equals photonics, diamonds, or a range of other bit replacements.

2/ Qubits and gates are the building blocks and operations in digital. Photons, diamonds, electrons, and so on are the bits in analog, you can encode any of these with information in various ways.

3/Strawberry fields for analog qc, and IBM's qiskit for digital

I work on photonic integrated circuits and adapt them to remove the physical limitations on capacity, such as heat, and information loss.

ktallett··on Show HN: Engineering Schizophrenia: Trusting yourself through Byzantine faults
I will check out your book as I had what I now believe to be trauma schizophrenic response (auditory and visually), and was diagnosed with unspecified schizophrenia in my late teens. I found that dealing with the trauma and dealing with what allows my brain to struggle helped solve things. Now in my mid 30's I am so used to dealing with it without medication it isn't an issue any more but I do have to do a few things every day to make sure I do not get to a place where things are possible.

I found computing and the internet to be the support network and escape network I needed but I could very easily see with a different personality how it could be the source of the issue. I work in engineering now, but i always focus on community projects such as supporting those with mental health challenges or those in prison which allows me to also stay focused on what my problems will always be.

ktallett··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
I have been using Fedora comfortably as my main os on a framework for the last 18 months and I have had no issues. I do just think for all that I do, lab work, coding, and gaming. I also run debian on mnt pocket reform and tbh I think it is OSes' like Linux that allow devices like that to exist. Windows and Mac just aren't options.
ktallett··on Mathematics for Computer Science (2018) [pdf]
It is not a silly question at all, a companion book with working and answers makes perfect sense. Universities and academic institutions who create things like this were often very wary as they often reuse these questions in classes and alternate the same questions over a span of 5 years. As realistically to test a small module of a subject the actual amount of viable questions in that question pool is rather few.
ktallett··on Japanese electronics store pleads for old PCs amid ongoing hardware shortage
That is a good point. I guess they are WoW esque but don't have the in app chat in the same way, and I am not in that community. Most of my Japanese friends are arcade types and I would go and play driving games with them like Initial D.
ktallett··on Ask HN: Is it time for HN to implement a form of captcha?
Do we have any users here that have such controversial or meme esque opnions that require blocking every single one?
ktallett··on Japanese electronics store pleads for old PCs amid ongoing hardware shortage
Oh I always preferred den den on the few occasions I have visited Osaka. I find it better value and less glossy. Saying this I did used to love a used Thinkpad shop around the back of Sofmap in Akiba. Very good value. Captain PC or something if I remember rightly. It shut I think in 2021 which was sad.
ktallett··on Japanese electronics store pleads for old PCs amid ongoing hardware shortage
Phone games seem to have been popular for a good decade. I find the extravagant advertistments in stations like Shinjuku are always rather impressive but I never quite get into any of those games like Genshin and Honkai.
