ktallett··on Why So Many AI Researchers Think the Machines Could Kill Everyone
The easy way would simply be to air gap them. The controls should be on site only.
ktallett··on Why So Many AI Researchers Think the Machines Could Kill Everyone
Is it because they will get funding to stop the risk even if the risk never existed in the first place to any significant extent? Are most of these wild declarations not exclusively for market value and funding?
ktallett··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
The EU are the reason most companies in the US have an actual way to repair anything. US companies in general have not changed a thing based on the US law.
ktallett··on Bomb Sense (2021)
It is interesting reading about all these game mechanics that I am aware of through sight and play but never considered the thought behind it. Twinkle Star Sprites is up there in my favourite games of all time, never usually a fan of that style of game, but the graphics and the complexity but simplicity got me hooked. A classic arcade style scoring where you have to try and do better each time always clicks.
ktallett··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
I completely agree with you, I was just trying to avoid being attacked by a certain group. I assume it's the processor as it isn't designed specifically for battery life etc.
ktallett··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
I am not a Tao hater but also not a fanboy but this is spot on! He is right, I don't love AI in many states and feel it is used for pointless task, however the beauty of that helping hand supporting you do tasks that you have no idea how to do is the magic in it. As a child we all asked questions regularly of what if we did this instead of this, why do we do things this way, why not try something else. Work and adult life gets us stuck in a rut, so anything that gets us out of a rut is welcome.
ktallett··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
To do the first one perhaps, although how many have really explored locally in full. To have fun is all dependent on your view on life and have human to human experiences can be had any time you step outside the door. Just talk to people and be friendly.
ktallett··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
Blows them away? I haven't seen anything that is not just one or two features that other watches don't have. But all the.features require the watch to be on.

Data accuracy most certainly is not in relation to GPS which often cuts distances on the Apple Watch.

ktallett··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
Two days is so poor for a ultra watch. The fact it won't last a full weekend let alone any significant hike just means it doesn't fit the market it is aiming at.
ktallett··on iPhone Duo
That is a huge market that they are ignoring.
ktallett··on iPhone Duo
I never trust the later with Apple. Too often have they failed to deliver. Why release this without the obvious benefit?
ktallett··on iPhone Duo
As a reading device that is great, but as a phone that is wide.
ktallett··on Flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
You won't get compensation for ATC issues, but you will be reimbursed.
ktallett··on Caltech Mathathon – first hackathon ever devoted to research level mathematics
Also true. HN is not the peak of human intelligence.
ktallett··on Nathan Fielder's Elizabeth Holmes Doc Met with Shock and Awe at Secret Screening
SBF. Lance Armstrong. Both in a similar vein and both as fascinating.
ktallett··on 100s of flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
Do you expect them to employ enough staff to answer passenger calls for this rare occasion? That is not good business.
ktallett··on Nathan Fielder's Elizabeth Holmes Doc Met with Shock and Awe at Secret Screening
The trailer for the documentary is such a draw, due to the subject, and also how close they were able to get. She is a mythical character in many ways yet a tech Lance Armstrong.
ktallett··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US
That was centuries ago bruv.
ktallett··on Caltech Mathathon – first hackathon ever devoted to research level mathematics
It is the top tier of humans in these fields that are making the significant breakthroughs. The top tier of breakthroughs are not being post on here (which are nowadays usually short form articles of not incredible quality). The code at start ups is not commonly in the top tier of a breakthrough. AI can do averaged work and derivations off what has gone before which Maths works very well for as there is a clear set of rules. The same in physics if you ask AI for help adapting a simulation, yet it couldn't pluck the idea if no one has done it before.
ktallett··on Caltech Mathathon – first hackathon ever devoted to research level mathematics
I get your point and agree to some extent, but you can't understand the proof without significant background in Maths so it will just allow mathematicians to solve issues faster than not have the opportunity at all.
ktallett··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US
I'm curious the reason why it was ever held in the US and Canada
ktallett··on New Zealand is determined not to keep China's espionage a secret
Why should it keep it quiet? All the countries that are in bed with China despite their acts are a joke. They need to accept being called out and embarrassed for their issues.
ktallett··on UK's Online Safety Act has made 'absolutely no difference,' kids say
It was never going to work. Unsurprisingly tech illiterate people are not really going to understand that you can't shove the porn genie back in the bottle. It's available on so many sites that you won't be able to force them all to collaborate. The government also won't be able to find the owners to fine them (that's without debating are you really operating in a country just because you don't block content). This was clearly a hope on restricting freedoms more, just like the goal of banning Vpns and e2e messaging.
ktallett··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
I would say if the age of voting increased then there should also be an upper limit as over a certain age, it's not your future. Prisoners should be allowed the vote for everything also
ktallett··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
It's a hard one. I feel the UK were wrong to leave but Norway and Switzerland have a fantastic overall quality of life without and I'm not sure the benefits of membership unless you are financially poor country. Iceland is probably better off joining the Schengen but not EU.
ktallett··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
Firstly, I won't ignore, what in the US the two biggest expenses, healthcare and housing and in the rest of the world, housing. It's a life essential that in most first world countries is becoming a scarce resource that many have to fight for. The ability to own your own dwelling is disappearing due to wages not keeping up with inflation.

Again, buying power, it would be less of an issue if wages kept up with inflation of the key products, aka housing. The largest item someone will buy is a home and that's reduced in quality.

The second most important thing for most people, is a job, and as I said, in most industries they have not matched with inflation. Therefore those today are working the same but earning a lot less for it. That is with or without a recession.

You may be able to theoretically consume more due to value decreasing of products but that's countered by the above. Likewise individual wealth, is just that, individual. Not everyone is doing better, most aren't, and we need a society where all are doing ok, rather than some doing great and some not.

(That EV costs more to begin with even with subsidies, and that disposable of the batteries are gigantic drain on resources. We still need to move to public transport.)

ktallett··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
That is simply a result of evolution as a species. We have oddly moved beyond where we potentially needed to be as a species for the financial benefit of a few and now we are reversing in quality of life due to the focus being on financial gain. Western citizens live a more selfish and worse life overall in terms of individual wealth, buying power, job availability, overall health, than say 20/30 years ago.
ktallett··on Rubio Uses Terrorism Law to Ban Secure Email Service
This seems to be a continuation of what has been going on for decades. Obama was far less heavy handed with his method of stating his disdain for services like this but he wanted any communication platform to be readable to the US government, hence the illegal citizen spying program.

We as a group of techy citizens need to keep building applications like this, whatever the designation it gives us.

ktallett··on UK public don't trust Fujitsu, but government does
Our government are idiots. They also trust Israel.
ktallett··on The first search engine for Internet-connected devices
Ugh! That's such a inappropriate interpretation of the data they have available. I always feel for funders who are fed such information and likely don't have all the expertise to recognise these tricks.
