ksherlock··on Usenet Archives
If you don't need binaries, eternal-september.org isn't too shabby.
ksherlock··on Usenet Archives
archive.org has usenet archives (in gzipped mbox format). Not exactly an "easy way" if you want threads, of course.
ksherlock··on Usenet Archives
if nothing else, it's much more usable than the google news archives.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: How Do You Relax?
Have you tried shotgunning a couple beers?
ksherlock··on German men 18-45 need military permit for extended stays abroad
I don't know how it worked for anyone else, but I remember the selective service PSA ads when I was growing up -- (that's a manual emdash) If you don't sign up for selective service when you turn 18, you'll be celebrating your birthday at pound-me-in-the-ass federal prison. Or maybe you couldn't get a welfare check, college loan, or federal job. The details are a bit fuzzy.

Then a month or two before my 18th birthday, I got a postcard saying I had been auto-registered. It was a rather disappointing denouement.

ksherlock··on Bourbon waste could provide next-gen supercapacitor components
Bourbon popularity exploded a few years ago but the market is over saturated -- too much inventory and people have moved on to other things. Also anti-American sentiment due to Tariff Man is reducing exports. At my local liquor store, a year or two back if you wanted a bottle of buffalo trace, you had to show up on delivery day (Friday afternoon) and I think they imposed a 2-bottle limit. Now, they've got boxes stacked on boxes filling up the aisles and it's all on sale.
ksherlock··on Samsung Magician disk utility takes 18 steps and two reboots to uninstall
If "years" means decades, it would have been classic MacOS which played by a very different set of rules.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: What was it like in the era of BBS before the internet?
Some BBS vendors maintained a list of public sites running their BBS software. For the price of a self-addressed stamped envelope, they would send it to you. You would know to do this because you read it in a magazine.

Another good place for BBS phone numbers was on a warez crack screen.

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Does anyone else notice that gas runs out faster than usual
Unless you find a fast station that sells ethanol free gasoline (and you'll know because it costs more), gasoline is cut with up to 10% ethanol. 1 gallon of ethanol is equivalent to 2/3 a gallon of good old gasoline. So to keep things simple, if you buy 10 gallons of gasoline @ 20 mpg is 200 miles. But 10 gallons of gasoline with 10% ethanol filler is really 9.6 gallons, that's only going to get you 193 miles. That's a 3.3% loss. Probably not enough to account for your "much less" observation.

Now is right about the time that refineries and gas stations switch from winter blend to summer blend, so maybe there's something to that.

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Why not use Codeburg (or Source Hut)?
8 years ago, when Microsoft bought GitHub, there was much digital ink spilled and some people/projects did leave for GitLab or elsewhere.

So one explanation would be that anybody cares already has left.

ksherlock··on Vibe-Coded Ext4 for OpenBSD
The history is a bit backwards but the point is good. OpenBSD atheros wireless code was imported into linux, the BSD attributions were removed, and it was re-declared as GPL. That was later changed back.
ksherlock··on Tell HN: H&R Block tax software installs a TLS backdoor
I'm old enough to remember when TurboTax overwrote your boot sector. Point being, I'm old and tax software has been doing scummy things for decades.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: Is using AI tooling for a PhD literature review dishonest?
"The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching." -- John Wooden

You're anonymously asking a bunch of randos on the internet instead of asking your PhD advisor. That should tell you something.

ksherlock··on Mystery jump in oil trading ahead of Trump post draws scrutiny
The Martha Stewart and Mark Cuban cases were more or less the same -- a non-insider investor was given information from an insider, sold their stock to avoid a loss, and were then investigated for it.

The thing is - insider trading is illegal but it's poorly defined.

Martha Stewart wasn't convicted of insider trading - she was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to a federal investigator.

Mark Cuban wasn't convicted of insider trading either. He wasn't convicted at all. He kept his mouth shut and the jury found him not guilty of insider trading.

ksherlock··on Does it make sense to ask Blackberry to re-license ancient QNX sources?
Once upon a time (2007!), QNX made their source code available under a read-only type license. When Blackberry bought them (2010), source code access was shut off.

That was 16 years ago so maybe their opinion on the matter has changed. But they make money (or at least try to) selling a commercial license for QNX so an unrestricted free/open license seems unlikely.

ksherlock··on Nanobrew: The fastest macOS package manager compatible with brew
brew used to say, more or less, "This OS is old and unsupported. Don't submit bug reports. If you have problems, too bad. If you submit a PR to fix something, we might merge it". Fair enough, right? Now it just says, "Go fuck yourself, grandpa."
ksherlock··on Are AI Agents like von Hammerstein's industrious and stupid?
Some of this AI brings to mind the old Despair "Incompetence" poster (https://despair.com/products/incompetence)

When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

For those too young to remember, once upon a time people went into an office to work. And sometimes HR put up motivational posters. And this spawned humorous demotiviational posters.

If you're still confused, they're memes that printed, framed, and hung on a wall.

ksherlock··on FSF statement on copyright infringement lawsuit Bartz v. Anthropic
With some coordination, perhaps enough people could opt out and start a new class action lawsuit.
ksherlock··on FSF statement on copyright infringement lawsuit Bartz v. Anthropic
If/when you get a postcard/spam email that you're included in a potential class action lawsuit settlement, you can opt out of the class (in which case you preserve your legal rights to sue separately) or file comments with the Court.
ksherlock··on Stdwin: Standard window interface by Guido Van Rossum [pdf]
100% correct. The GitHub repo linked elsewhere include this documentation in (dit)roff (-ms) form.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: The trickiest bug you've encountered?
A buffer underflow that overwrote a pointer that overwrote 1 byte of code in the multiplication library (no hardware multiplication or memory protection, by the way) that caused unsigned multiplication to be handled as signed multiplication (or perhaps vice versa). This didn't manifest until much later, of course.
ksherlock··on Node.js needs a virtual file system
Perl has DBI. PHP has PDO.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: Would this eliminate bots for good?
If Tesla optimus robots were breaking into my house at night, logging into my computer, and using my web browser, this would be one solution.

You didn't mention anything about how the web server knows if the other end of the connection is this user-hostile browser or a python/javascript bot with a spoofed user agent.

ksherlock··on TUI Studio – visual terminal UI design tool
Use the source Luke! It's an "ASCII plasma background" rendered into a canvas element.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: Let's rethink the architecture and future of Emacs
I think of GNU emacs as a 1980s-era lisp machine emulator, oh and there's also a weird text editor. Most people focus on the text editor.

Anyhow, as a terminal application, emacs is brilliant. As a GUI application, it's dog shit (gnu shit?). If I stepped in it, I wouldn't scrape off my shoe. I wouldn't even throw away my shoe. I would amputate my leg to get rid of the stench. It's that bad. The GUI isn't even a real GUI, it's bad terminal emulator that only runs emacs.

So, right, decouple the UI.

ksherlock··on I don't know Apple's endgame for the Fn/Globe key–or if Apple does
I'm guessing nobody at Apple wears their WWSJD bracelet anymore, but for everyone else:

Back when I [Steve Jurvetson] was a student, I had Steve Jobs over to my house for a fireside chat with the GSB [Stanford Graduate School of Business] High Tech Club. When I asked my childhood hero if he would sign my Apple Extended Keyboard, he looked a little surprised to see Woz’s signature already there, and then he exclaimed, ‘This keyboard represents everything about Apple that I hate. It’s a battleship. Why does it have all these keys? Do you use this F1 key? No.’ And with his car keys he pried it right off. ‘I’m changing the world, one keyboard at a time,’ he concluded in a calmer voice.

https://archive.nytimes.com/dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/10/06/...

Personally, I would take an Apple Extended Keyboard (or II ;-) ) over anything they've sold in the past, well, whenever they stopped selling them. (Typed from my Unicomp Model M Mac)

ksherlock··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
That's the reference but I've always heard it as 3 envelopes:

1. blame your predecessor

2. blame your staff

3. write 3 letters...

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Anyone else feel this community has changed recently?
I had the same question about dropping HN earlier this week, and it's entirely from the the AI overflow (most of it low quality, IMO). For now, I've decided to be the change so instead I flag and hide.

Banning new/green account from submitting would probably help. /ask is full of green How do I AI? posts.

ksherlock··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
Based on the old soviet joke, the first time you blame it on your predecessor, the second time you blame it on your advisors, the third time you write 3 letters. Since Kristi Noem was fired yesterday, maybe we've moved into the second letter phase.
ksherlock··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
From 1991-1993 there was a luxury tax on yachts, private jets...
