ksec··on Review: Chuwi's $449 Unibook laptop is a funhouse-mirror MacBook Neo
Sorry but this is a rantish posting.

I read mirror MacBook Neo and I was expecting something.

2026, So this marks close to 40 years of reading PC reviews, before it was online and in magazines. And they have been the same all these years.

It is all numbers, numbers of port, how fast it runs, SSD / Hard Disk speed. CPU numbers comparison. Screen resolution etc. They are doing exactly the same, reading off spec sheet. And how these spec is better than another spec.

Thanks to Youtuber, or enthusiast who now have wider audience thanks to the internet. Keyboard actually got shouted out, screen details other than resolution matters. Speakers got improved because they keep mentioning it. Trackpad, laptop screen opening. WebCam, cooling. All these small things that no one mention but thanks to those with online influence keep demanding and shouting about it has a lot of these been improved on the PC side. And they all happened in the past 6 to 8 years.

If online publishing thinking why you guys are not getting views and losing perhaps it isn't just the medium alone.

This year also marks 25 years of Apple Store, perhaps worth reminding why Steve wanted to open the store in the first place. For people to experience their products. Something can't be said in words or in advertising. It is best for the customer to feel it.

ksec··on Small Models Have Arrived
While they are improving rapidly, or as you say even if they don't. The next stage is for hardware companies ( cough Apple cough ) to ship these Local Model ready hardware in their products.

It will be interesting to track the improvements of these 7B model over time.

There will be a turning point in the next few years where it attract enough consumer attention to create yet another Smartphone and PC super cycle.

ksec··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
>sounds like a baseless claim frankly.

>only the latest intel cpu are beginning to get "comparable" with previous m-series cpu.

I am comparing ARM CPU against ARM CPU Core. Which is why it needs to there to the ARM Spec specific to ARM ISA. And those are standard ARM CPU design tested across industry benchmarks. Not sure what is baseless about it.

ksec··on Stripe acquires Clerky
Clerky: We help startups and attorneys get legal paperwork done.

I wish all smaller startup that is being acquired by big fish would start their blog by stating what they do first. So that hopefully we get a little bit of context of what is being sold and what it might add in the future.

Every single time I had to click around and look at what they do and what are their competitors to help understand the company.

ksec··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
You said > "Considering how much better m-series CPUs are, "

And I give some thoughts into may be they are not "much better". And in that case may be sticking to spec and not Thinking Different on certain things matters more.

ksec··on IBM Unveils Next Generation Dual-Architecture Processor for IBM Z and LinuxONE
>What does IBM actually do?

You should dive into the topic of Mainframe. There are a lot of financial transaction to other critical infrastructure are dependent on it. And not just because of backward compatibility but technical superiority.

ksec··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
Keep forgetting to reply.

>It seemed pretty standard at B2B tech providers.

It is, but I was referring specifically to Home Office in UK Gov.

ksec··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
AFAWK, M6 CPU is a die shrink of M5, so unless something M7 present that will significantly improve CPU performance. The ARM C1 CPU core that is available to everyone has pretty much matched up to Apple. And that is all things included from performance, power, die size etc.
ksec··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
>The ARM specification mandates that cores in WFI loops should preserve all state. This is not the default mode on Apple Silicon.

I sometimes do wonder at what point do ARM find and test these stuff and ask Apple to follow. Obviously this is not the first time we see such thing happened.

ksec··on Firefox 157 will include JPEG XL by default on all platforms
Considering this is Mozilla and they were the first major organisation to call out Webp and supported JPEG via a new encoder, it does give more weight to the comparison between JPEG XL and AVIF.

Prior to 2024 JXL were the better codec for image with BPP 1.0 or above. AVIF or AV1 itself has had a lot of quality improvements since then. May be this has change. Which means more testing needs to be done.

ksec··on Tell HN: Even HN is getting heavy traffic by AI crawlers
It specifically mention Human readers. Although Yes the other side of the coin doesn't have to be AI it could be any web crawler.
ksec··on OpenAI is "80% of the way" to AGI
I mean Open AI has the incentive and history of hyping it up. And the general rule the last 20% would take the same amount of time as they got the first 80%.

But having said that, it is getting ridiculously good and plenty of people find enough value out of AI as of today. In terms of hardware we already knew what the next 3 to 4 years would be like. There seems to be enough work on optimisation to further enhance the model.

ksec··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
The custom integration is pretty big in and of itself. But the most important thing is that all these ARM C1 Ultra core is accessible to everybody. And it is performing well against Apple's CPU. The old Apple does better SoC advantage is vanished.

We will have A20 vs C2-Ultra this year. Can't wait to see it .

ksec··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
Can't wait to see this in actual product and not a development board. It fulfill some of the original promise from ARM. And the world is about to turn upside down if most of that video show are proven to be true.
ksec··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
I wouldn't be surprised if Xiaomi intend to use this for their laptops with Windows 11 once the software ecosystem matures. Which both ARM and Qualcomm are working on. But I still believe in terms of PC usage it is all going to be Nvidia.
ksec··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
It is just the same as MediaTek Dimensity 9500. They managed 4000+ point in lab, but real world it was much closer to 3300.

It is still not a bad results though. And we are about to see MediaTek Dimensity 9600 based on ARM C2-Ultra.

ksec··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
This is still an ARM C1-Ultra. Same one used in Mediatek dimensity 9500, which also got more than 4000 points in GB6 lab test. But actual results inside phone with smartphone cooling and wattage requirement became close to 3300.

But perhaps the most important thing, Xiaomi is now able to make chip similar to Mediatek. They are the third largest Smartphone manufacturer by shipment volume. And they are still growing.

This is bad news for Mediatek and Qualcomm.

ksec··on Migrating a Synology NAS to a UniFi UNAS Pro 8 with Robocopy, SMB Multichannel
Does anyone know if the UNAS range uses ZFS as well or does it use BTRFS or something else?

I only know their higher end enterprise range specifically said ZFS but all the others doesn't seems to mention it. And I really wish there is a simple 4 bay ZFS NAS.

ksec··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
I wish that was the case. Not something I have experienced personally.
ksec··on Hot Chips 2026: Applying High Bandwidth Flash (HBF)
I had to double check those figures on Sk Hynix office web site [1], and it is not a typo or wrong capital "B".

It really is 3TB per second.

I literally paused for 5 min and thought how is this even possible.

ksec··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
>and have staff at hand which could solve any solvable remaining issues like this one. They call the Home Office internal hotline, explain the issue, resolve it by manually interfering on the spot (and have a bug filed), and everyone carries on.

This may be possible some 15+ years ago. Home Office today is very different. Without a prober procedure written down I doubt this could be solved manually. Nor would anyone want to solve it manually.

ksec··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
In typical WiFi fashion, for all the WIFi 8 features to working perfectly and debugged we have to wait for WiFi 9 [1]. This was true with WiFi 5, WiFi 6 and WiFI 7.

Unfortunately IMO WiFi router brand selection is getting increasingly small. I have no issue or problem with using UniFI myself. But it is not something I could recommend to family and friends as they don't know how to set it up. Eero is not available to much of the world outside US. I just wish Apple revive its AirPort Express business.

ksec··on HN: The Good Parts (2016)

ksec··on The road to ACID transactions in Cassandra 6
>multigres from supabase seems promising

I have high hopes for Neki from Planetscale but then again if you are not stuck on Postgres for whatever reason, Vitess with MySQL is about as battle tested as it gets.

ksec··on Tap to Pay Is Coming to Walmart and Sam's Club
Not from the US so may be other could chime in if any info is incorrect.

This is specifically Walmart. While Tap to Pay, or contactless payment in US did start much later than other part of the world, Apple Pay has help to move this forward since its introduction. But Walmart has refused to accept this and has relied on their own payment system. Both to capture customer's data usage and perhaps the most important thing is cutting some processing fees.

People have requested Apple Pay support to Walmart and to the point refuse to even shop at Walmart. This fight has been going on for more than a decade and now they are finally accepting the fate and market pressure.

It is perhaps interesting to note how long did Walmart hold out for this. Why? And what was the final piece of information that made them decide to accept it. Notice they said Tap to Pay, they still don't use the term contact less payment or Apple Pay.

And may be it is the submission time but I think this is actually big news and should be further up on the HN front page.

ksec··on Kino: A high-performance Ractor web server for Ruby 4.0
It is interesting not in terms of its technical capabilities or merit ( or lack of ), but what Rails will default into. Apart from Minitest, defaults in rails tends to have a large impact on its ecosystem. ( Not that I like it either, but in most cases that is the. Way it is )
ksec··on Omacom Foundation launches with $8M
So this is announcement. I was thinking if it is going to be Omarchy Server edition. But reading the names of all founding members I can see why it is worth the hype.

I guess for now most people will be trying Omarchy on their old PC laptops. Especially when new one is expensive. It would be great if there are certain test case or certification to make sure given laptops works with Omarchy.

I don't think there has been anything close to Omarchy for Linux Desktop momentum. ChromeOS isn't one because most of it usage is like a consumption devices appliance used for education. And those Download numbers and Internet video views seems to back it up.

There are roughly 30 - 50M professional software developers, I wouldn't be surprised if it is closer to 100M if we include hobbyist and other adjacent roles. Even if it is 10% of this market is a sizeable trunk.

On the other hand it is sad to witness the birth of Omarchy is precisely because of Apple macOS, iOS and its software ecosystem. I hope we have more senior leadership changes in the coming months once John is officially CEO.

ksec··on TigerBeetle Core System Architecture: Deconstructing Performance Engineering
In about 5 years time the trend will be "Just use Beetles" for everything :P

Seriously Can't wait to see this.

Congrats on launching [1] Tigerbeetle Cloud. Should have submitted that as well but I thought this was more interesting. May be another time.

ksec··on Bringing Rails into the Ractor-Age
It looks like Ruby 4.1 may have Ractor as non-experimental and Rails 8.2 to have a lot of Ractor ready fix.
ksec··on Kino: A high-performance Ractor web server for Ruby 4.0
It will be interesting to see the Ruby Rails direction on ractor vs Fiber. Shopify is testing on Falcon / Fiber for production already.

Edit: Turns out they are working on Ractor as well
