London, Hong Kong and somehow California*.
Often a Contrarian.
The unwritten rule of HN: You do not criticise The Rusted Holy Grail and the Riscy Silver Bullet.
Interest: JPEG-XL, AAC-LC, VVC / LCEVC, Patent Free AVC, FreeBSD, TigerBeetle, ZFS, DTrace, Vitess, Vespa, Objective-C, Java, Zig, Odin, Crystal, Ada, Ruby, Graal, Rails, 5G/6G, OpenPOWER, Apple/China, Supply Chain / Manufacturing, Retail.
@Google: Why No Pixel Phone in Hong Kong?
The whole iOS and Android keep copying each other and without someone like Steve being the editor they became pretty similar.
I want an iOS that is SIMPLE. And the software Apple is offering right now is anything but simple. Homescreen is now clustered mess. And for every banks, resturatnts all want an App for themselves, either you skip all the discounts and functions or now you have more clutter to deal with.
2020 Zen 3 AMD Ryzen 7 5800 - 1852
2024 Zen 5 AMD Ryzen 9600X. - 2914
2027? Zen 6 - Est 3200?
And compare this to Apple.
M6 4000+
M5 3600+
M4 3300+
Even the Snapdragon X2 Elite X2E is better at 3300.
The gap isn't exactly shrinking. And I would love x86 to prove me wrong. But even a hypothetical Zen 7 in 2028 ( 2029 for consumer ) may only catch up to Apple's M5 released in 2025.
>Compared this to the article "How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?" The Zen 3 uArch being used in the article came out in 2020. So it is more like AMD got 50% faster in 5 years.
Now I am thinking how did that link got into my Copy and Paste. I checked my history I didn't even visited the link before this, nor the main thedailybeast website.
And I can't delete the entry.
Niche but no small business, commodity with over $400M USD annual revenue, the industry together that is easily $2B+.
If it is not broke, don't fix it. And there are industry that is extremely conservative in anything software, they will just keep it running for as long as they could.
I used to be sad that we don't have something better to replace these antique software. Now I have come to appreciate it, mostly because newer software haven't show they have manage to add value in the slightest. And most of the time they simply don't work as well.
Delphi, Visual FoxPro, Visual Basic, Flash. I used to think one day we will have something that is not only faster, easier and scalable replacement of those. Instead everything went more technical, more complex, enterprisy and non-user friendly.
And to the Author of the project. Thank You for making it.
I wish there is some tech in the pipeline, that in the next 5 - 10 years we could get decent pictures quality without the huge bump.
You might want to take a look at Odin as well.
Second is that Apple's improvement were done when they were state of the art and leading the pack. This is a lot harder than when you are behind and being shown how much more room to grow.
The A20 Pro is the largest leap in performance in recent or perhaps in all of Apple SoC history. It doesn't get enough credit and attentions that it deserves.
Compared this to the article "How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?" The Zen 3 uArch being used in the article came out in 2020. So it is more like AMD got 50% faster in 5 years.
And perhaps this also answer and refer back to the previous HN submission and comments as to why ARM Mac are slower on SVT-AV1 encoding. Apple's SIMD performance is still behind AVX-512. But it is for good reason though and the trade off IMO is well worth it.
And that is in the context of
>Fully proprietary no issue with that,
I guess I learned something new everyday.
Once you have all that, it is how do you sell it, and sell enough unit to even have a ROI. And that is ignoring UI / software.
I don't think people on HN understand, hardware business is brutal.
A20 Pro is around 4K on Geekbench 7. And the P-Core is not the same as M6. The A20 Pro is actually only 9 wide compared to 10-wide on M6. Supposedly more power efficient and smaller die size.
Another point is that the multicore part uses all core including E-Core. On AMD the multicore are all the same. Meaning for some benchmarks this will flavour Apple more.
Again there is nothing that stop people from optimising it for ARM Mac. The problem is the usage of it is so small it probably doesn't make sense to focus on it. SVT took a really long time for it to reach quality parity with AOM's AV1 encoder and later exceed it.
Is Meta still using it and developing it? If not who are the driving force behind it now? I just checked there wasn't a release since 2022 and then we have this now. Something changed?
Just wish we have a little bit of context. But it is also great it is continue being maintained. It makes a huge difference for Ruby on Rails Apps.
Nvidia already or will definitely make a product that will compete with Apple, as they are moving towards full integration. They also owns the networking, GPU, CPU, and other parts as well. Apple's only advantage is M8 potentially being slightly faster and macOS. Neither is a moat for the intended market.
Ignoring AOM and AV1, I was the first few on HN apart from its author supporting JXL from the start, I would argue the biggest case against JPEG XL is JPEG li.
Jpegli offer enough quality improvement and advantage without introducing an entirely new codec. And all of a sudden the bar for next image codec now needs to be even higher.

I do. Even though it reads as trying to as fair as possible. But remember, your title is "The case against JPEG XL".
And the rest of the article is within the context of the title.
Although for some reason the AI organise tab option is not showing up on me.
Ever since Steve Jobs passed away and Tim Cook let others continue to make Apple Store into something different. First a high street electronics store then a fashion showroom and then a "social community" space. It wasn't until Deirdre O'Brien took charge before she start to walk back a lot of changes.
Another Good sign from John since in charge.
We are closing in to rolling out the last / final phase of 5G. And yet none of the Massive MIMO on FDD is happening. We are still stuck on 32T32R, hardly that impressive considering we have that in LTE already. Not to mention the insane complexity increase from 4G to 5G. And judging from the previews of 6G that seems to be event worst.
If you ask an average user, they will tell you they don't feel much different between 4G and 5G. Yes there are capacity increase and other things. But at this stage I don't think the benefits outweigh the cost of switching. That is both from MNOs and End user perspective.
2028 April we should be getting A20 Pro MacBook Neo. But I wouldn't be surprise if they bump the price by $100 again.
That Youtube built. I know at the time Youtube was already part of Google but I don't think of Vitess as a Google Stack.
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple release an iPhone Duo Max later.
