kschrader··on Show HN: Clubhouse – project management built for software teams
We have estimation in place, and planning is done at a high level via Epics, but not at the granular level of "you can get 25 points done this week, based upon past performance" (yet).

Related: We have cumulative flow diagrams in place at the Epic level so that you can see where your bottlenecks are and visualize progress.

Suggestions are welcome on how to best add tracking to the system without it being too overbearing.

(I'm also a founder here.)

kschrader··on Show HN: Clubhouse – Simple, scalable project management for software teams
Hi all, would be great to chat about why we built Clubhouse and what we're trying to do. Looking forward to your feedback.
kschrader··on Show HN: Ship – A fast, native issue tracker for software projects
When I see the above definition of mental overhead associated with these tools I immediately think "JIRA" because it can literally be configured in millions of different ways, and people seem to like to configure the hell out of it.

Unless by JIRA does this now you mean, "JIRA allows for a many confusing setups, leading to the above situation more often than not" I have to disagree here.

kschrader··on GitHub Raises $250M at $2B Valuation
No download and install option... yet.

We deploy multiple times a day right now. Clubhouse is built with the option of a hosted version in mind, but we'd have to get to the point where we felt that things were stable and complete enough to say "ok, let's call this 1.0 and ship it."

kschrader··on GitHub Raises $250M at $2B Valuation
We're working on something to split the middle at http://Clubhouse.io

As easy to use as Trello for small teams, but scales up as you grow (although we probably cap out at 100-ish devs right now, not quite to Jira's level yet.)

(Full disclosure: CEO/Founder)

kschrader··on Ask HN: Who's using Clojure in production?
My new startup Clubhouse (http://www.clubhousehq.com) uses Clojure for the entire backend. Also, the data team at my last company Intent Media (http://www.intentmedia.com) used Clojure for most of their data analysis.
kschrader··on Apple's new Fingerprint Sensor
The fingerprint sensor auth will just fill in the form fields with your username and password. You can sync these over to your desktop machine and use them like you usually would there.
kschrader··on LivingSocial: Employees' and Founders' Common Stock Now Worthless
Some of us do work hard to build profitable businesses. I don't think that one bad investment deal is going to make a big difference.
kschrader··on One Night With Clojure Makes a Scala Guy Humble | Agile Zone
As someone who's done a lot of functional and OO programing over the years, I find it very hard to believe that you have multiple projects that went from 1K+ lines of C++ to 10 lines of Scala.

Claims like this are the sort of thing that make make it hard to convince people to try functional programming, because they think that FP evangelists are full of shit.

kschrader··on A visual Git reference
Perhaps you (or someone else with a better understanding of git) can fork https://github.com/MarkLodato/visual-git-guide and clean it up then.

I think that it would be interesting to reread this after it's been worked over by someone to better represent the way that Git actually works.

kschrader··on The Big Three – Scala, Clojure and Groovy
I find it unfortunate that we now equate "intensive static typing" with "serious systems." I know of almost as many serious systems written in Clojure as I do in Scala, and I think it's fair to say that they're pretty much polar opposites as far as typing goes.
kschrader··on Why Has Andreessen Horowitz Raised $2.7B in 3 Years?
I would be interested in learning more about the technology that they use inside of their organization to enable a lot of this. Clearly they've recognized that they need share a lot of information to make this work and to give them a competitive edge.

Does anyone know if they have a dev team in-house to build this stuff?

kschrader··on Building a Data Science Team at a Startup - An Engineering Perspective
I'm hoping to write a couple of follow-up posts talking about some of the trade-offs that you're going to have to make when you're a startup that doesn't have the resources of a Facebook or a LinkedIn. It's difficult to do everything in that (admittedly great) article if your resources are limited.
kschrader··on Dear MG Siegler, Are you seriously upset about your photo?
If by "new" you mean "the thing that's been going on for thousands of years."
kschrader··on The CIO's lament: 20-something techies who quit after 1 year
I've been managing the development team at my startup for 3 years now and have had zero engineer turnover. I follow a fairly simple process:

1. Make sure that people are learning.

2. Let people use new technologies and give them interesting challenges.

3. Make sure that people are paid above average salaries.

4. Keep the hiring bar high so that smart people get to work with smart people.

5. Demand that code quality stays high so that you don't have to work on a pile of shit.

Every time that I see an article like this I want to send the writer this list of things so that they can put it on their wall and look at it every day. It's really not that hard.

kschrader··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (August 2011)
New York, NY - Intent Media

Intent Media is building a unique enterprise-class advertising platform. We’re shaking up the e-commerce industry with a big idea: enabling e-commerce publishers to monetize the 97% of visitors who aren’t buying on their sites. Our auction-driven technology platform is easy for e-commerce web sites to implement and contains sophisticated tools for minimizing risk and optimizing results.

As a part of the Intent Media engineering team you would help us build out our software and algorithms that continuously analyze millions of data points to solve the problem of who to serve ads to and what the best ads for them are, all while being optimized to run ridiculously fast.

Tech: Ruby, Java, and Javascript

kschrader··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (July 2011)
New York, NY

Intent Media is hiring software engineers, devops engineers, and a product manager.

Doing lots of cool stuff in Ruby, Java, Javascript, Hadoop, AWS, etc. Lots of data to play with and lots of hard problems to solve.

We're in SoHo in NYC in an awesome loft.

kschrader··on Why yo momma won’t use Google+ (and why that thrills me to no end)
I think that you're fooling yourself if you don't think that G+ is going to have Farmville on it soon. It's too big of a draw and too big of a money maker for it to not have them.
kschrader··on Anyone working at Facebook: what happening at Facebook on Google+?
At the end of the day, I wonder if it really matters what Facebook does.

Once Google gets everyone on Plus then that omnipresent black bar will be at the top of every Google site, constantly sucking you back in with alerts of what's happening in your social stream. People will de facto head to Plus whenever they search, check finance, check their Gmail, look at their calendar, etc.

Ultimately, it's going to be hard for Facebook to compete with that level of constant activity.

kschrader··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (June 2011)
New York, NY

Intent Media is hiring developers to help us build out our platform for advertising on ecommerce web sites.

We crawl through giant data sets from some of the biggest companies out there to help decide whether or not someone is likely to buy something and, if they aren't, what ad we should serve them.

We've grown from 6 to 30 people over the last two years, and we expect to continue to grow quickly. We're looking for people with Java, Ruby, and Hadoop experience.

Email me directly at kurt@intentmedia.com if you're interested.

kschrader··on Why NYC is not Palo Alto cc: MikeBloomberg
At my company in NYC (Intent Media) the founders specifically spent time writing a clause into our standard employment agreement granting everyone the rights to their side projects.

I'm not sure how common this is, but it seems like something that everyone should look at before signing on with a company, especially with the battle for talent that's going on right now.

kschrader··on Have you ever printed a boarding pass?
The Continental application for iOS allows you to just pull up your boarding pass on the screen and have the security screener scan the phone screen.

I would imagine that some of the other airline apps do so as well.

kschrader··on Why you shouldn't bother with an MBA
Am I reading the chart on that page correctly that the post-graduation salary is on average 20-30% less for most MBA graduates?

I find that to be a shocking figure after the 2 years and huge amount of money that people generally invest in getting an MBA.

kschrader··on Path — Introducing The Personal Network
I wonder if they pushed this out of the door because of the traction that Instagram is picking up right now. It feels very similar, although not as refined at this point.
kschrader··on Demystifying agile, top 7 myths.
The problem is that "agile" doesn't mean anything.

On my team we follow an agile approach, but we also have rough ideas on product direction for the next year or so and themed releases planned out for the next few months.

For us it all comes down to an understanding that if something else comes up then some of these features are going to have to slip to get other things in. It also means not building things that we ultimately aren't going to use.

If you just think that Agile means "don't plan, just do whatever you want" (i.e. Chaos) then of course you're going to hate it. No one can work like that.

kschrader··on Greg Mankiw: I Can Afford Higher Taxes. But They’ll Make Me Work Less.
Does anyone else find the entire premise flawed? If all he wanted to do was maximize the amount of income he's going to pass on to his children then he would be an investment banker, not a Harvard professor/author. Any bank would take him in an instant.

Trying to make it sound like $1000 is the only incentive in play here seems like a mild distortion at the very least.

Perhaps instead of down-voting this you can simply reply to it.

Unless of course you don't think that discussions happen everyday or that it's not ultimately saving us time.
