krolden··on Cosmic DE update: System76's new Linux desktop environment
Every vendor that seems to say they care about coreboot implementation seems to just be doing it to capture the eyes of people like us who actually care about it. But then as you stated, they'd rather spend their time/money to write their own DE than give a shit about open firmware.

If I was going to buy a coreboot laptop it would likely be a higher end Chromebook that mrchromebox has a hack for.

Ummm, a vibrant ecosystem of desktop environments/window managers is one of the best things about Linux.

Love how using a VoIP number would totally cancel out that attack, but so many websites require you to have a 'real' phone number. I assume its mostly to weed out scammers.

What information would be recoverable without the storage device? ROM dumps? I doubt the majority of these computers are running any super secret firmware and if they are I assume there would be extra precautions taken when its EoL.
krolden··on MacBooks from 2020 Are Being Sold for Scrap Because of Activation Lock
Most Security Depts were just fine with HDD/ssd destruction. With new apple machines there is no possibility of this.
krolden··on MacBooks from 2020 Are Being Sold for Scrap Because of Activation Lock
Maybe they could just use laptops with removable storage then.
krolden··on MacBooks from 2020 Are Being Sold for Scrap Because of Activation Lock
No, if you reinstall macos without removing the machine from your apple account it will lock down just like a factory reset iPhone and require you to login to the original account.

Yeah, extra work for overworked IT departments. I'm sure they'll be happy to add extra work they dont have to do.

Ive worked with second hand devices for a long time. Ive had many come through that have activation/MDM/etc locks and have tried calling the IT dept they came from and all but about one time they pretty much just laughed at me or just played dumb about it entirely. Apple and other vendors were no help in this as they just tell you to contact the original owner.

Philanthropy is always about dodging taxes and improving your public image rather than actually helping people.

Something I learned from this article is that the CEO of Tripp lite did the same thing but donated it to some far right 'nonprofit'.

krolden··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
So since there's basically zero phones with physical keyboards that means no one actually wants them? I guess me and everyone else that have been angry about touchscreen only input for nearly the last decade just "dont want it enough"
krolden··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
Right to repair means being able to replace the battery without risking damage to the device
krolden··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
Most issues with batreires in laptops and stuff come from vendor firmware that checks if its a genuine OEM part or not. Same with printer cartridges.
krolden··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
Pay extra for labor on top of parts, and theres a good chance theyll screw something up like the waterproofing seal or leave a loose connection that you won't notice until weeks later. Then you have to take it back and convince them its their fault and wait even longer while they hopefully don't screw the phone up even worse.

Yeah that definitely sounds more convenient than a removable battery.

krolden··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
Hey I thought capitalism inspired innovation. So why does nearly every phone being made today is basically a brick of glass you can't open?
