kristopher··on Here's the Most Idiotic and Brilliant App Ever
Perhaps it is worth more to Apple that a user can download apps and continue the "iPhone lifestyle" than worry about how to fix their device. I personally think that it is not a conflict of interest.
kristopher··on Blink tag removed from Firefox
Quite fitting that the <blink> tag originated with the Netscape browser[1] and now is removed in its descendant Firefox.

The idea was first discussed at a bar in Mountain View, CA.

They do, it's called the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" [0]

kristopher··on Pigeons master touchscreen intelligence test
PigeonRank™[0] is more real than we may once have thought!

kristopher··on ISS emergency spacewalk to repair ammonia leak [live video]
And now fixed! Only 48 hours after the leak was detected.

Interesting that they hook-up the "broken" module back into the system for diagnostics.

kristopher··on Show HN: Launching Hoverboard – beautiful, responsive portfolios
Also, perhaps it was not obvious, but is there a way to change my password?
kristopher··on Show HN: Launching Hoverboard – beautiful, responsive portfolios
White text on a white background should be fixed. Perhaps detect automatically or allow for user customization.

kristopher··on Try Objective-C
The Super Mario World theme is cool, although super ironic since Objective-C/iPhone is helping to displace the Nintendo Empire.

kristopher··on Japan: An Insider's Educational Experience
Yes, Japan has its own way of developing members of society. CBC (Canadian Broadcasting) did a very cool mini series on Japanese schools called "Children Full of Life"[0]. At the very least, I highly recommend everyone to watch part one.

kristopher··on B-Heap vs. Binary Heap (2010)
Here[0] is the implementation if anyone is curious.

kristopher··on A Primer on IPv4, IPv6 and Transition
The problem is not in the routers or operating systems, it's in the applications.

Programmers do not yet know enough about IPv6, nor do they have the drive to learn about it.

kristopher··on 7 billion people on 1 page
This idea could be improved by allowing people to "claim" their spot by logging into Facebook or Twitter, adding a face to an otherwise large number.
kristopher··on Mobile Hardware Statistics (and more)
Here is a link to the actual data: http://stats.unity3d.com/mobile/index-ios.html

And look at Windows XP! Almost half of the market at 47.7% http://stats.unity3d.com/web/index-win.html

kristopher··on URLs are for People, not Computers
URLs are for Browsers. Go to any asian country where most, if not all of the population, searches for the websites and content they require.

The goal in designing a good URL is in a scheme that allows the site to grow without "abandoning" URLs.

kristopher··on The Y Combinator Startup Index
Good effort, although I thought it was interesting that revenues were not included as a metric.
kristopher··on Samsung GS4 launch: Tone-deaf and shockingly sexist
Well, to be fair it was a musical. No comment on the phone itself.
kristopher··on The State of LTE
Also, how are you measuring speed? HTTP Download? Where are your servers located?
kristopher··on The State of LTE
HOW SPEEDS COMPARE doesn't really mean much. Japan has a higher density of users per square kilometer, so it seems to me that there should be some sort of normalization done to the numbers. I get better speeds in Kyoto (less simultaneous users) than I do in Shibuya (many simultaneous users!)
kristopher··on Collection of 6,850 video games and 330 consoles up for sale on Ebay for $550K
A lot of history here. Could be worth more than a mere half a million.
kristopher··on What it's Really Like Working with Steve Jobs
Two things that stood-out:

>"Many years later, when NeXT acquired Apple for negative -$400M"

and

>"We would "throw them into the cauldron", and stir it, and soon nobody remembered exactly whose ideas were which. This let us make a great soup, a great potion, without worrying about who had what idea. This was critically important, in retrospect, to decouple the CEO from the ideas."

kristopher··on Dear Apple, DUNS is a scam, but you already know that
Hmm, DUNS was discussed in great length recently (4 days ago) on HN[0][1]... Not sure why we need another thread on the topic.

kristopher··on Apple's Company Registration for its App Store is Awkward and Awful
Japan's equivalent of D&B is TEIKOKU DATABANK or TDB[0]. These guys will come by the office and run through a multiple of questions -- if you don't answer them, they will be reflected in their database.

Whenever you get a call from TDB it is both scary and exciting because you know that some major Japanese corporation wants data on your current standing.

Also, registering for a DUNS number here in Japan is very simple because most of the information that they are after is already filed with the government in an easy to access format.

kristopher··on Psy Makes $8.1 Million By Ignoring Copyright Infringements Of Gangnam Style
"Ignoring" might be too strong a word here. Licensing is in play, but they are not going after individual infringers.
kristopher··on Photo of a Nuclear Explosion Less than 1 Millisecond After Detonation
I have to admit that I misread the title the first go around as "Nuclear Explosion Less than 1 Mil[e outside of ...]" Being at the top of HN did not help much.
kristopher··on Scott Forstall leaves Apple
While mere speculation, I do not think he is leaving over Maps directly. I personally think there was internal tension over making sir Jony head of leadership and direction for Human Interface and he quit over that -- also there is the possibility that he was perhaps looking to run Apple as CEO at some point but that does not seem to be in the cards.

kristopher··on Track Hurricane Sandy
Some UIX advice: Only Sandy is listed as a current storm, so that should be loaded by default instead of showing an empty map.
kristopher··on A little hexapod robot that I made
Cool -- does it have any sort of sensor array to guide its mobility?
