kristaps··on Watching video twice at 2x can benefit learning better than once at normal speed
Right up there with other techie superstitions such as "editor x makes me a better programmer, because typing faster".
kristaps··on Advent of Code 2021
My current company actually did just that - I got to solve two AoC2020 puzzles for my code sample.
kristaps··on Ask HN: What are these low quality “code snippet” sites?
I wonder if Google as an organization cares enough to start a new spam crusade, but here's what happened the last time: https://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/google-search-and-se...
kristaps··on Hammerhead Rhythm Station (1997)
I can't believe you've forgotten!
kristaps··on Software company SAP: World-leading through intellectual property theft?
Sure, copies are cheap, but producing the original is often not.

Unrestricted copying would discourage quite a few projects being started due to not having any chance to recoup investment.

While IP may be a flawed tool at times, it still is a useful tool.

kristaps··on Is 40 the New 60?
I'm from EU, finance and IT are neck to neck for highest paid professions. Absoute pay numbers are lower than US, but under no circumstances could they be called average.
kristaps··on Ask HN: What do engineers never talk to their bosses about, but should?
Skepticism about tech/ideas that management likes.
kristaps··on New Ways to Be Told That Your Python Code Is Bad
The ootb linter setups I've seen offer little useful checks, just everybodies feelings about your code, so personally don't find them useful. This article is a prrfect example of that, but kudos to the author for being honest about it.
kristaps··on How the Python import system works
Yeah, saner relative imports might be one of the few things that I envy the JS ecosystem for.
kristaps··on Adobe Joins Blender Development Fund
Maybe the same reason why Google keeps Firefox alive - to be able to show there is no monopoly in some category of software.
kristaps··on It's been three years. Stop saying your European visitors are important to you
I make it a point to click "reject all" if the initial dialog only allows accepting some implicit default preferences.
kristaps··on Secret Management in Kubernetes
Sounds like the marketing department participated in writing the docs this time.
kristaps··on Intuit to share payroll data from 1.4M small businesses with Equifax
Damn it feels good to live in the EU some days!
kristaps··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
Yep, these arcane rules are maybe relevant to the 5 or so people writing mailservers, but not to web developers.
kristaps··on Microsoft says mandatory password changing is “ancient and obsolete” (2019)
If there was no user inconvenience, how could you tell those responsible for security are doing their job?
kristaps··on In Python, `[0xfor x in (1, 2, 3)]` returns `[15]`
Not by design, fortunately: https://bugs.python.org/issue43833
kristaps··on In Python, `[0xfor x in (1, 2, 3)]` returns `[15]`
Why is it parsed like that and not as invalid integer literal "0xfor"?

edit: 'cause it's a bug! https://bugs.python.org/issue43833

kristaps··on Show HN: Simplenetes – I replaced Kubernetes with 17k lines of shell script
Not April fools judging by github history...
kristaps··on Why doesn't capitalism produce good kettles?
Similar Philips story for me - had several pairs of SHP2000 (and HP200, which is basically an earlier model nr for the same exact headphones) over the last 20+ years. They're comfy, sound great for their price and the quality hasn't become worse over the years.
kristaps··on JSON parser written in 6502 assembly language
Time complexity O(R*)
kristaps··on SwiftGraphQL – A GraphQL client that lets you forget about GraphQL
I would like a backend developer perspective on the same.

I haven't done any GraphQL stuff myself, but the "I can get whatever data I need" aspect feels like a huge potential headache for backend devs. Won't be a problem at prototype scale, but once you have a significant client count, how do you deal with unpredictable data access patterns that can't be optimized ahead of time?

kristaps··on 26 Years of Delphi
> When Delphi was released in 1005

Lovely typo, although it undeniably feels as if Delphi has been around forever.

kristaps··on Null
Breaking things is far easier than making things. While this type of poking around might feel fun, it will mostly result in low value work to fix something very few (if any) actual users would experience.
kristaps··on Groundhog: Addressing the Threat That R Poses to Reproducible Research
Don't remember the source and probably misquoting, but I like this truism: there's software that people complain about and software that nobody is using.
kristaps··on Minimal safe Bash script template
> So you need to understand how it is different. And you need to be disciplined about quoting

Or I can use a sane language that let's me get my stuff done faster and with less opportunities to shoot myself in the foot.

kristaps··on Google Cloud: $72,000 bill overnight
Google once (falsely?) considered my Revolut debit card a pre-paid card and refused to accept it for GCS billing. The error message wasn't anything generic either - it stated specifically that pre-paid cards are not accepted.
kristaps··on Insights from Adopting TypeScript at Scale
The article mentions they have around 2000 engineers, at that scale investing in custom tooling can easily become a significant net gain in productivity and stability, especially when dealing with the JS ecosystem.
kristaps··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
Pretty sure sending only legitimely useful emails to customers will not get any vendor blacklisted.
kristaps··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
I first try to find an unsubscribe link, but if there is none or it's broken, then into the spam filter the message goes.
kristaps··on Google's new logos are bad
Remember any corporate rebranding where the press went "hey, this is pretty good actually"? Me neither. My guess is that people just hate change and will rationalize why old>new.
