krisgenre··on I Love Coding on Linux
>>ubuntu distro has not been able to wake up from suspend

Yes, this has been bugging me too. At work, I recently upgraded to a Dell Precision running Ubuntu 20.04 and this has been happening quite frequently (a bit less since a firmware upgrade). Strangely this was never an issue on my previous Dell Latitude running the same.

krisgenre··on I Love Coding on Linux
I am neither a C++ developer nor a Windows user but as an IntelliJ user just wondering if you have tried CLion?
krisgenre··on Nuvola Player – Linux desktop integration for web-based streaming services
AFAIK this does seem to extract Widevine from Chromium on first use.

>>The pendulum has shifted, and it's swinging towards PWA

Didn't Firefox recently announce they're discontinuing PWA features?

krisgenre··on TeaVM: Build Fast, Modern Web Apps in Java
AFAIK IBM did want to buy Sun but backed out because of potential antitrust reviews.
krisgenre··on Pidgin – A Universal Chat Client
Ah! the glorious days of integrated chat clients.

I had friends of MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, GTalk and for a very limited time ICQ (Actually it was the same guys on all networks :) ). There weren't any network effort, people were willing to try out different IMs for their uniqueness.

Lots of companies were trying to produce integrated chat clients - Pidgin, Meebo, Trillian, Digsby and a whole lot of guys on Mobile targeting Symbian OS (could recollect only Nimbuzz though.) I loved Digsby because it acted as a POP client too.

I even worked for a company that forked Ignite Realtime Spark and tried adding Gtalk and MSN support. When I was freelancing one guy asked me to clone meebo for $500 .. and I accepted :facepalm.

krisgenre··on Show HN: Beeper – All Your Chats in One App
Not sure how many know/remember Digsby? It worked pretty well on Windows, got acquired by Tagged, open sourced, promise of Linux client and then disappeared.

Hopefully Beeper will survive.

krisgenre··on GitHub Stale Bots – A False Economy
I've just started using Eleventy for our site. For someone completely new to this it was bit difficult to start but once off the ground have started to love it. The best thing is if any feature is missing you can quickly write a plugin in javascript.
krisgenre··on Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend?
Reminds of the movie Inception where Robert's subconscious mind is trained to protect itself from dream thiefs.
krisgenre··on IntelliJ Idea 2020.3.1 Is Out with Apple Silicon Support
I use IntelliJ on a 2015 Macbook pro and an equivalently old Dell Latitude running Ubuntu 20.04. The mac has only an i5 dual core processor with 8GB RAM while the Dell has an i7 quad core processor with 16 GB RAM. I hardly find any performance difference with IntelliJ on both the machines.
krisgenre··on Jetbrains founders turn billionaires without VC help
I guess AppCode and Rider aren't included. As a Linux user I completely forgot they existed :).
krisgenre··on Facebook's Hypocrisy on Apple's New iOS 14 Privacy Feature
If pay to use is the only model, lots of developers would only target developed countries.
krisgenre··on Jetbrains founders turn billionaires without VC help
.. and IntelliJ Ultimate has plugins that brings all the features of all of their IDEs(PHP, GO, Android, RUST, JS...) except CLion.
krisgenre··on Jetbrains founders turn billionaires without VC help
I didn't even apply for a license from my company because I use it on my personal laptop too. Jetbrains is so good that I actually feel happy paying for it. Its quite ironical that I started my career as an Eclipse RCP developer and up until 2016 I considered it the best IDE in the world.
krisgenre··on Dear Google: Search Competition should be 1 Click Away so why 15+ on Android?
https://publicpolicy.googleblog.com/2009/02/browsers-powered... was posted by Sundar Pichai himself!
krisgenre··on Why an Apple search engine has a real shot at competing with Google
If Apple releases a search engine that was even half decent, DDG would be in big trouble. Most of DDG users would jus move to Apple because they have a better 'privacy' brand.
krisgenre··on Java is better than C++ for high speed trading systems
"We only use the constructs that are fast and efficient, and we avoid all the garbage."

Is there any open source project that one can study to understand how to code like this?

krisgenre··on Billion Dollar Startup Ideas [video]
Haven't watched the full video yet but the saying that one shouldn't build what everyone else is building doesn't seem like good advise.

Yahoo was hugely popular when Google launched. Orkut and MySpace were very popular when Facebook launched. There were many popular messaging services when Whatsapp launched.

In fact I think just digging out something from the Google graveyard would be a good idea. 4-5 million users might be a pittance for Google but most of us would be more than happy to have even half of that customer base.

krisgenre··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
I initially thought this was about the site strawpoll.me. On a side note why does the caption above the chart says 'Advertisement' ?
krisgenre··on How does the event loop work in JavaScript? [video]

krisgenre··on Technical debt as a lack of understanding
Been thinking of explaining technical debt using a book library as an example...

Say you want to start a lending library, you hire one person and stock 25 books. The stock is small and one person can easily remember all of them so the employee just piles them up in a corner. If a customer wants fiction or literature or whatever, the employee could easily look up the pile and pull it out.

Over time the books grows from 25 to 50, the stocks still small and there's just one employee so they are all just added to the pile.

50 grows to 150, you hire one more. The old guy feels that since there are two of them one can lookup the first 75 while the other can search the next 75 and organizing would a waste of time and space.

When you hit 500 books the debt starts to kick in but again you try to solve it by hiring more people. Some of the new hires want to categorize the books into proper racks but that would mean shutting shop for few days and not adding any new books. This is unacceptable to a non technical manager so things continue to be the old way.

By the time you hit 1000 books some of the employees are fed up with the time consuming work and quit, the replacements have no clue what is where. Most of the customers were served purely based on the muscle memory of the old employees and now that they have gone the business starts to crumble.

krisgenre··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application
Yes, I meant the GUI.
krisgenre··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application
A sting of nostalgia and coincidence perhaps, was thinking about Java and HFT only a few days ago.

I worked as an offshore employee for E*Trade back in 2010 - 2012. Their desktop app for HFT was written in Java Swing and their web client too was running on the JVM but the 'services' layer the one that interacted with the database was written in C++.

Four years ago heard that they were re-writing the desktop app in JavaFX.

krisgenre··on iPhone 12 Pro so costly in India, you can fly to Dubai to buy it and save money
How much is the tax for software in the US?

A $149 IntelliJ licence costs $176 including taxes + there is a 3.5% processing and currency conversion charges imposed by by credit card. Converting to INR I may have to shell out Rs. 3.5k to 4k extra which has dissuaded me going for an All Products Pack and settle for the Ultimate license.

krisgenre··on Wifi Dabba (YC W17) – Own a Piece of the Internet in India
Way back in 2009 there was a company in Chennai that tried something like this https://www.equitybulls.com/admin/news2006/news_det.asp?id=5....

And AFAIK Hathway (another ISP in India) too tried something like this but didn't succeed and they went back to traditional fibre.

I don't know anything about the tech but it seems like it is not so easy and I do hope Wifi Dabba succeeds.

krisgenre··on Yahoo Groups is closing down
Oh yes Yahoo Games! I used to play Pool and Chess for long hours. Didn't mention it because I mostly played from within Messenger.
krisgenre··on Yahoo Groups is closing down
I spent a good amount of my teenage using Yahoo services - Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Groups, Geocities, Yahoo Mail and of course Yahoo search. It's really sad to see them fade into oblivion.

I wonder what will happen to Google and Facebook in the next twenty years.
