krilly··on BusKill: A kill cord for your laptop
Er, why not just attach the laptop itself to your body? Low tech > high tech
krilly··on Show HN: Simple 2D car physics with JavaScript
Can we all stop using imgur now? It's been like an hour, one of those images has been flagged as adult content and the other is 404ing. postimages.org is good
krilly··on The Joys of Unix Keyboards
I rather like the position of \ and / in the ISO layout. \ is on the right of lshift and / is on the left of rshift. It feels nice and consistent.
krilly··on Ask HN: Which project does not have any good open-source alternatives?
I'm not sure how similar it is, but TortoiseHg is the best version control GUI I've used
krilly··on Ask HN: Which project does not have any good open-source alternatives?
Godot is what you are talking about. It seems to be doing very well. It's MIT licensed, and has official support for C#, C++ and their own Lua-like scripting language.
krilly··on Ask HN: Which project does not have any good open-source alternatives?
Here are two projects which are doable, I think:

- Paint.net: freeware windows mspaint replacement. Lightweight and simple UI, but powerful features and extensions system. I hate having to boot up GIMP just for editing a screenshot or something, but no other decent libre paint alternative exists

- SketchUp: this is to blender what paint.net is to GIMP. Super easy and intuitive to create simple models. A joy to use.

Yikes. I get not supporting mobile for now, but what about people who like to use little browser windows like me? Doesn't seem to be responsive at all.

krilly··on Invisible Arch Linux
>While you could deniably encrypt any system the mid-2014 Mac is special because it had a battery recall. The recall repair work gave owners the perfect excuse to shred their devices using crypto-randomness prior to service.

Do people really expect this stuff to hold up in court? Especially when you've written an entire public blog post on how to deniably encrypt one

krilly··on Apple's products are getting harder to use, ignore principles of design (2015)
I absolutely disagree.

Nova Launcher is an example of a pretty good piece of software that fulfills all 3 requirements in my mind (it's a 3rd party launcher, or desktop, for Android). It's what I use personally so it fits my power user and ricing needs, but it's also what I set up for less computer literate relatives.

It has every option one could want, but they are organised sanely and are kept separate from the basic interface. I don't see why this is difficult.

As a power user you could easily set up your click and hold labels with KWGT or KLWP. Having this option available doesn't make the phone worse to use for normal users. All hail the android ecosystem!

krilly··on Visual Studio Code repository is open again
Right? Clearly riffing on the 'happy holidays' message. I think it's a pretty funny post, and it's even more funny that it was taken seriously.

Someone could go stalk their account to check, I can't be bothered with that right now.

krilly··on Show HN: HNTerm – Browse Hacker News in the Terminal
You could trick it into using different colours like so:

krilly··on America’s First Amphetamine Epidemic 1929–1971 (2008)
Believe me when I say lithium isn't particularly enjoyable
krilly··on Tuv sees black for Tesla: Cybertruck would not get approval in Europe
Is this article computer translated from the German source? It seems like it's barely even been proof read.
krilly··on “My Car does not start when I buy Vanilla Ice Cream” (2015)
There is a GitHub repo which lists loads of interesting bugs (vanilla ice cream car, 500 mile email, etc.) with better quality writeups than this. I think it's been posted to HN before. Anyone?
krilly··on Animal painting found in cave is 44k years old
Some of the oldest depictions of hunans (e.g. the Löwenmensch figurine) are, err, furries. Anthropologists have attempted to make all sorts of conclusions from this.
krilly··on Making Games with Kotlin
Why not unity? (It's an obligatory question at this point)
krilly··on Notepad++ v7.8.2: Free Uyghur
Seems like plain old nationalism to me. I've been seeing a lot of Indian nationalism online as well, particularly on videos about the Indian space program or Indian mathematicians
krilly··on Don't pay off Ryuk ransomware, warn infoseccers: Its creators borked decryptor
Was this accidental or intentional? Russia has recently been distributing fake ransomware in Ukraine which is intended to cause economic damage rather that generate profit.
krilly··on Welsh Password Generator
This is funny but is the opposite of the idea espoused in the correcthorsebatterystaple xkcd. Welsh words are hard for (most) humans to remember, but easy for machines to check (since wordlists are publicly available)
krilly··on An open-source browser extension to auto-skip sponsored segments on YouTube
AFAIK I know demonetized videos (which are 'unsuitable' for YouTube ads) generate zero revenue, so I think that's a no. It would go to creators who create exclusive series for YouTube premium, though.
krilly··on Ask HN: What tech choices make “new” Reddit so unbearably slow?
Even worse, now comment chains can't be expanded without logging in.
krilly··on The rise and fall of the PlayStation supercomputers
I would expect this to be more viable than ever, now that the cost of console hardware is so heavily subsidised by online subscription services.
krilly··on Google management shuffle points to retreat from Alphabet experiment
The share button is right there... How do people always miss it when copying links?
krilly··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
I have always connected this problem with automatic cars. I haven't looked at statistical evidence, but I think this is a much bigger problem in the US than the UK and I think it's because it's much easier to drive an auto with one hand.

I often see established vloggers and public figures recording themselves with a smartphone while driving and they always seem to be American.

I believe there has been some adjacent research done into the safety of manual cars which has found that they can be safer since they demand more concentration to drive.

krilly··on Clear backpacks, monitored emails: U.S. students under constant surveillance
Which bit of this are you upset with specifically? Monitoring internet access on school devices? That's been standard in every single school and workplace for decades.

The clear backpacks are silly I'll admit, and also pointless. I agree that kids getting conditioned to be okay with surveillance is bad, but this is all coming from the private sector right now.

In China, you now have to submit your face to be scanned into a database to get a new phone. This has already been normalized by all the face swapping apps, like Zao. Kids in the west wouldn't think twice about accepting the Ts and C's for Snapchat or IG or anything else that includes face scanning tech.

krilly··on New South Wales rolls out mobile phone detection cameras
There was a political scandal in the UK when a politicians wife took points on her license for him, to prevent him getting a driving ban. The camera that clocked him only checked numberplates. She grassed on him a decade later and went to jail for her trouble.

krilly··on Belarus’s Soviet Economy
I am positive that vegetables from across the world have much less environmental impact that even locally sourced beef.
krilly··on Foreign Accent Syndrome
There are many Scottish accents, and Braveheart isn't one of them.

To me it sounds very much like Inverness, or maybe a native Gaelic speaker from the outer Hebrides. They have an interesting accent which sounds somewhat foreign, despite debatably being more native than English

krilly··on Many elementary teachers don’t understand math, and it makes them anxious
I was never told this, and I'm sure the reason why is because my teacher didn't have a clue either
krilly··on Recreation.gov
What with all the talk about bot abuse in this thread, an API may not be a good idea
