krige··on Emily Wilson to retranslate the Odyssey from scratch
> but at what point does it become an interpretation instead of a translation.

As someone with a degree in translation, all proper translations are interpretations. Even similar languages usually have enough differences that a by-the-word translation pushed by some as the only true translation sounds wrong and/or broken to the native ear.

Consider a simple statement: "I am bored." In french they "literally" say "I am boring myself." instead. And English in many respects is french-pidgin. It gets worse when the lingusitic distance widens as many languages store various information across different words and constructs.

We do not do literal. Never did literal. That's why you learn whole languages, not just the words.

krige··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
That guitar stays with you. I haven't played DF in forever but I can still conjure up lengthy chunks of it from memory.
krige··on Amiga-Inspired AROS Goes Bare Metal on Raspberry Pi
> There’s no actual data, but if we had to guess the least-favourite Disney movie of former Amiga owners would have to be Frozen, because none of them will ever be able to “Let it Go”.

Hey!

I resemble that remark.

I haven't tried AROS in a while because I still treat it as a bit of a novelty and it's always a bit of a chore to set up a system for it. Raspi3 is cheap and easy to set up, might see what's the deal with it these days after all.

krige··on I dream of quieter computing
To sellers, yes. The drop of visual quality when the top-down LCD push began was staggering.
krige··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
At least some reviews for Worms mentioned Scorched Earth (in superlatives too). It was big enough that systems that didn't have it, wish they had it.
krige··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
Nitpick: not Gorilla.bas; it was the actual OG, Artillery. Prototypes, which used sprites ripped from Lemmings, were even named "Lemartillery".

And the creative bankrupcy of T17 is a whole another topic. I would rather suggest that they lucked into Worms when Davidson approached them by happenstance, and would not survive otherwise.

krige··on Japan tried to build an operating system for the world, the US intervened
> Amiga couldn't over come the PC.

For reasons that had nothing to do with OS. Swap Steve Jobs with Irving Gould and Apple would be dead in under a decade too.

krige··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
Well yeah. Look no further than the "brevity is the soul of wit" quote. It's taken at literal value when, in context, you know it's a joke, a potshot at the expense of the character saying it, who's anything but brief in speech.
krige··on Where Human Sleep Went Wrong
> People already live in different altitudes, ie with vastly different amounts of rock between themselves and the bits of the earth that produce her magnetic field.

It's not really the same thing. Construction and especially the high content of charged metal (whether it's power conduits or plain old frame) may make a considerable difference.

krige··on On AI regulation and messaging
As usual with LLM era craze, finding candidates was never the bottleneck. And, so far, it failed to actually provide any tangible results. [0]

krige··on Research papers using "kidney disappointment" instead of "kidney failure"
I've seen it make very LLM mistakes, esp. "hiccups" and palilalia this month.
krige··on SIMD in the 90s: Programming Intel's Pentium MMX
IME Q2 also ran much slower on comparable hardware despite looking worse. The first rig I played them on was an unaccelerated P200MX with a paltry 32 megs of RAM and Q2 struggled at 320x240 while Unreal was slightly choppy but acceptable at 400x300.

Good lord, 400x300.

krige··on Bluesky Protocol Services
Twitter seemed to have no issue growing so that doesn't seem right.
krige··on Tim King, AmigaDOS developer, has died
Yeah, I'd concur - the DOS-like parts of early AOS are really not pleasant to use and feature lacking, but if it's that or nothing, I'll take that.
krige··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane_emissions

fossil fuels contribute 33% farm animals contribute 30%

Not astronomically; marginally. Anyone who's been around herbivore farm animals will tell you they fart. A lot.

Then again, farm plants are a further 18%.

krige··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
The answers it gives are often trash though, even more so the whatever lobotimized model they slap on top of google search.
krige··on Nobel Disease
> Scientific and political beliefs often do not stand the test of time, but is it fair to blame the people of past eras for their misjudgements using the values of today?

the problem with this reasoning is that it assumes or tries to imply that people "back then" all held such backwards beliefs, which far too often is not the case. For instance, see how Morse's diatribes on slavery and racism are presented - but the state he was born and operated in already abolished slavery about a decade before his birth.

krige··on The sale of Electronic Arts has been finalized
EA lost FIFA a few years ago. The games are now "FC". They still sell though.
krige··on The sale of Electronic Arts has been finalized
If they sold games and were well monetized (not to be confused with heavily monetized), they wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.
krige··on The sale of Electronic Arts has been finalized
I meant in the videogame industry.
krige··on The sale of Electronic Arts has been finalized
Because the Saudis leveraged this buyout via a massive loan from JP Morgan, EA's debt is now 10 times higher than it was when it was a publicly traded company: $2.2b to $22b.

Turns out the notion that they wouldn’t need humans to make games and they would use AI for most things was a pipe dream and firing staff to be profitable with the huge loan didn't work.

Now they are fucked.

Every company that spends money to buy up companies died and goes defunct because they keep failing to realize that they have to keep spending loads of money to make money and it doesn’t just roll in after acquiring IPs. Not even mobile slop or live service can save them anymore.

krige··on Shipping Godot VR and Porting to PSVR2: A Partial Post Mortem
Godot has the Compositor. https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/rendering/c...

Unity has little advantage over Godot these days, unless you're familiar with one and want to spend absolutely zero time familiarizing yourself with the other.

krige··on User Interfaces of the Demo Scene
A nice, somewhat nostalgic read. I had X-Copy and D-Copy both, although I'm more familiar with the later X-Copy editions that were quite purple [0] [1]. It was also my first contact with the concept of disk defrag.

krige··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
Also one of the most controversial translations, if memory serves.
krige··on Amiga 1000: Ten years ahead of its time
This is actually wrong because most of the A1000s were bundled with an RGB monitor and an optional composite out. The system wouldn't be really connected to a shitty TV until the budget models were released well after OS 1.X color scheme was established.

As far as I can tell the blue/orange scheme was instead aimed at monochromatic monitors.

krige··on Amiga 1000: Ten years ahead of its time
I'm not seeing it. Sure, the window bgs are gray, but so was 90% the OSes at the time. Everything else is different and even the only things those two have in common, the pseudo-3D on buttons, is applied in different ways, creating different divisions and accents.
krige··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
That's a whole separate argument you've invented here. And if the capability exists today, why did you talk about some nebulous future?
krige··on Amiga 1000: Ten years ahead of its time
10 years ahead, but for Irving motherf- Gould wasting it all out of pure greed, even after Rattigan managed to turn things around. AmigaOS 2.X is still a fantastic UI and design language though, especially compared to the ugly mess of 1.X
krige··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
If you're trying to say that Microsoft implemented a method of delivering specifically malware executables to every PC, I've got a bridge to sell to you.

Let's not diminish LG's part in all this.
