krickle··on [dead]
So it's more like NY lawmakers take two steps backward, one step fore.
krickle··on Black and Whitey: How the feds disable criminal defense
Thoughtcrime is definitely the wrong term for this class of unjust punishment.
krickle··on Enhancing digital certificate security (Fake *.Google.com cert issued)
If the CA issues certs like that they actually are compromised.
krickle··on Patent trolls want $1,000 per employee for using scanners
And note that C is only an option if you are being sued as an individual, if you are being sued as a corporate entity you cannot defend your company pro se, you must retain a licensed attorney.
krickle··on Patent trolls want $1,000 per employee for using scanners
Yes! I love this. If we can reduce the cost of defending these we would eliminate them without needing anything else.
krickle··on Patent trolls want $1,000 per employee for using scanners
You know, escrow sounds like a great idea if it can reduce applications by the same amount it increases prior art submissions. It would make it harder for individuals, though.
krickle··on Patent trolls want $1,000 per employee for using scanners
Or we could take the money those pills cost, give it directly to researchers, and open source the results. Lower costs, same results, money left over for plenty of other things. I mean you do know the US has the worst cost/lifespan ratio of the western world, right?
krickle··on YoungLispers tell how they got into lisp
I got interested in lisp because of hn and pg, actually. Now I am writing toy one and reading through the kernel paper (because why shouldn't macros be first-class language objecs?). It's a sickness.
krickle··on How and why I run my own DNS servers
I was thinking giving any hacking attempt some sort of fake shell access would be a great learning experience, how awesome is it that other people had that thought and made it.
krickle··on I don't want to download your app
I certainly hope it won't last! But there isn't a large downside to angering the few of us that were just passing by.

My dream is having some AdBlock-style filters for misbehaving websites, run by tens of thousands of people. Then we could nip these practices in the bud.

krickle··on I don't want to download your app
They want to have push/local notifications. It's like getting ahold of an email, but moreso. I've turned off Javascript to avoid them asking, now I constantly get "turn on your javascript" black overlays from Wordpress sites. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
krickle··on Dangling by a Trivial Feature
My perspective is that you are using that person's processor time, so it's okay to have anonymous opt-out if they know what is happening, otherwise I don't think it's appropriate.
krickle··on Congress, at Last Minute, Drops Requirement to Obtain Warrant to Monitor Email
The terrorists did get a lot of what they claimed they wanted, though.
krickle··on Dangling by a Trivial Feature
This is hugely important. Any analytics had better be opt-in from a very visible and honest request dialog. Otherwise, quite frankly, it's unethical.
krickle··on Apple kills a Kickstarter project
I completely agree. You cannot put your own software on it and if you have one you're forced to take an extra set of cables when you vacation, and you need to baby those cables because adding protective sleeves to the ends "isn't the right design" but a new one is priced like they are made from gold.
krickle··on Wil Wheaton on Instagram's new ad policy
Revokable addresses are going to become a necessity in the not-so-far future.
krickle··on An office with "library rules"
I think it seems like a rude question? I have coworkers that keep asking me trivial development questions and I don't really know how to say, "I'm going to need your first reaction to a problem to be Googling it".
krickle··on Apple releases iTunes 11
I wish they would release us from iTunes or at least let me use the damned thing with my work and home computer.
krickle··on In Silicon Valley, Technology Talent Gap Threatens G.O.P. Campaigns
Both choices are crap, but I think most technical people would still rather have the restrictive patents over policies drafted with the expectation of Jesus's return.
krickle··on The Troubling Dean-to-Professor Ratio
Dripping nourishing soap water on the thinning surface of the higher education bubble.
krickle··on Facebook Pages: Why I don’t like Nest thermostat or anything else anymore
You know we are a highly technical audience and YC companies can advertise jobs, etc. here, right? I think that post is right, and things like cable TV or Hulu are just squeezing some money out of their product before they pass it on.
krickle··on Brian Harvey: Why SICP matters
I love the story where the creators defined a Lisp interpreter in Lisp, and then one said, "you know, we don't have a Lisp compiler, but I could compile this source by hand." It's quite an elegant concept when you accidentally create a fully-functional interpreter overnight.
krickle··on Time Warner Cable Modem Fee Is "Hi-Tech Consumer Fraud," Lawsuits Allege
Are you kidding? I would never expect important information of any sort to come in the form of a postcard.
krickle··on Time Warner Cable Modem Fee Is "Hi-Tech Consumer Fraud," Lawsuits Allege
Those workers are not paid enough to pay attention. I wish we could remove the Rapiscan machines and use that money to train and pay TSA staff. Then we might get security instead of just the theater.
krickle··on Algorithms [pdf]
I always vote up posters that de-scribd pdfs in the comments.
krickle··on Large Scale Distributed Deep Networks (by Jeff Dean et al)
Something I have been curious about for a bit; how do you include textual data as input into a NN?
krickle··on Petraeus case shows FBI's authority to read email
Presumably the Fifth Amendment, which still protects one from disclosing their password unless the prosecutors have a witness who has seen illegal material on your device.
krickle··on Rampant Abuse of Push Notifications Is Ruining Them For All Developers
I gave a one-star review to an app just for spamming me with "like us on Facebook" requests in the app. But the number of reviews it had was well into the hundreds by the time I got to it, so my effect was miniscule. I agree with you completely, but as long as we are dreaming of an ideal world we may as well assume all apps behave in the first place :/
krickle··on Rampant Abuse of Push Notifications Is Ruining Them For All Developers
This is the number one reason I find my iPhone irritating (in practice) -- apps keep abusing even local notifications and those should be off by default unless I allow it.
krickle··on Smuggling USB Sticks
Wow that would fit right in the middle of Catch-22.
