kreelman··on Doomgeneric: Make porting Doom easier
This is a great idea. It would be even better if there was a Makefile for the Linux/BSD folk. Might be able to open the .sln in VS Code though? Thanks for putting this together. I like the comment lower down

Doom is the new 'Hello World!!'
kreelman··on Emulating win32
Good luck with this. Looks interesting.
kreelman··on Datasette is my data hammer
Your preaching to the choir Simon.

...But the tenor ...whose pitch is a little off... up the back, Is listening even though he's heard it before :-)

I think the ability to so quickly create and consume an SQLite DB is one of the big advantages here. I need to use bigger DBs like PostGres and MSSQL (in previous roles) for bigger tasks, but SQLite is down there with fopen in terms of time to create a DB.

I find myself imagining schemas for problems that I'd like to put into SQLite and possibly DataSette.

Thanks for making DataSette Simon.

I think "Practical Common Lisp" is pretty good. The wikipedia for it is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practical_Common_Lisp

A direct link to the PDF is here too. https://github.com/ccceye/computer-book/blob/master/Practica...

Another interesting one is "Land of Lisp", https://www.amazon.com/Land-Lisp-Learn-Program-Game/dp/15932...

It's more theoretical, but kind of fun. It's a touch more academic (IMHO) than Practical Common Lisp, but pretty good.

kreelman··on Common Lisp and Music Composition
Interesting article. Thanks.

Noticed a lot of use of setq... Wondering if this is simply the author's muscle memory or if there is a speed or reduced complexity advantage compared to using setf.

I think this kind of demonstrates the amazing plasticity of Lispy environments. There are multiple ways of doing something as relatively straightforward as assignment, all within the one version of the environment (I know, other langs can do this too, but still neat).

I'm gradually getting my head around Emacs lisp. Lots of setq there.

kreelman··on Casio-F-91W die-shot
Have a look at this. Joey built a whole swathe of sensors to plug in to a f-91W like circuit. https://hackaday.com/2022/02/24/remoticon-2021-joey-castillo...
kreelman··on A circuit simulator that doesn't look like it was made in 2003
Very cool. I threw on a 9 volt power supply and attached a wire across both terminals and clicked "simulate".......

Smoke starts coming out of the battery. I wondered what it would do, nice it does that.

kreelman··on The persistent and pervasive impact of bullying in childhood and adolescence
Great that this has made it to the front page of Hacker News.

So sad that this happens. I changed schools 5 times and only 2 of them had no bullying. It's true that it changes you. There are some good resilience changes that happen, but there are bad changes too.

...Unfortunately I think it is the human condition to want to have power over others. It would be awesome if there was some way to fix this, but we are all a bit broken I think.

kreelman··on A tiny C header-only RISC-V emulator
Far out. This is amazing. The links included... Linux in a pixel shader ?!?! What? Very cool.
kreelman··on Demystifying Fourier analysis
Great that you've tried to learn by teaching this. I'm going to read it in depth later on. Thanks and well done so far (based on the bits I've read).
kreelman··on Reverse Engineer’s Perspective on the Boeing 787 ‘51 days’ Directive
This is a really good analysis of the issue from the just the verbage from FAA. Well done.
kreelman··on In Utah, researchers are trying to make geothermal energy a reality
This is a pretty good video on the same thing. This is the "Undecided with Matt Ferrell" channel on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8sjdOjNxIE

There are the usual adds, but nothing unusual in that respect. Seems like a pretty good summary.

kreelman··on Introducing PyScript (summary of PyCon keynote)
That seems reasonably fast on my machine. Thanks for the demo (and the bonus for those interested in that kind of stuff).
kreelman··on Redbean 2.0 turned into more than a hobby project
Hi Jart, From powershell, via .\redbean.com -v

Program 'redbean.com' failed to run: Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software At line:1 char:1 + .\redbean.com -v + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. At line:1 char:1 + .\redbean.com -v + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : ResourceUnavailable: (:) [], ApplicationFailedException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : NativeCommandFailed

From cmd.exe I get

The system cannot execute the specified program.
I'll see if I can get it "unblacklisted", Perhaps my anti-virus got to it first?
kreelman··on Redbean 2.0 turned into more than a hobby project
Downloaded redbean by doing curl https://redbean.dev/redbean-latest.com >redbean.com in powershell

Tried to run it IN CMD.EXE with

redbean.com -v

I get this error (in a dialog).

Hmmmm, didn't know. But of a shame, but wasn't intentional. Perhaps they should call it Methuselah?
kreelman··on Interactively edit individual DCT blocks in any JPEG image in the browser
Yep, this is a great little demo. I love these little bite-sized pieces of instruction. Well done.
kreelman··on Lorinda Cherry, author of dc, bc, eqn has died
Many thanks Lorinda for bc. A super useful tool. Rest in peace.
kreelman··on Show HN: I made a little digital circuit simulator that operates on PNGs
This is great. Well done. Thanks for posting it.
kreelman··on The Great Siberian Thaw
I'm kind of surprised there isn't more interest in this article.

Any big change like this would seem to me to hint at some large effects later on. In Russia alone, the changes have the potential to be huge.

I guess it is still kind of "New Year" and people are hunkered down with COVID all over the world.

kreelman··on Darling – Run Mac apps on Linux
In case no one knows what zig is.... https://ziglang.org/

From the link.... "Zig is a general-purpose programming language and toolchain for maintaining robust, optimal, and reusable software."

kreelman··on Show HN: I rebuilt the Flash app “Scale of the Universe” in WebGL
This is fairly spectacular and a great deal of fun. Puts your daily problems in perspective.....

:-)

kreelman··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
..I understand this desire to not have a boss, but I think running a business might not provide the "no boss!" situation that's desired.

I've heard it said that when you're employed by a company you have (usually) one boss, but when you have your own business, you have many bosses (demanding customers who threaten to leave and not pay if you don't do things the way/speed they want them... sounds similar to a boss).

Perhaps part of the solution is getting staff to be more confidently able to say "No", or at least have a conversation/disagreement around a given issue.

Not everyone wants to start a business or be a contractor.

I think it's the human condition that power will be misused.. We live in a broken world unfortunately.

kreelman··on Clog – The Common Lisp Omnificent GUI
Wow, I think this is quite amazing. I'm a Delphi dev by day (I know, not many of them left). On first glance this lib looks and feels vaguely similar to Delphi, in terms of windows, events and such.

The difference though is the possibilities enabled by having it all running in Common Lisp. Dynamism, speed.. enjoyment :)

Hoping this goes well.

kreelman··on Fortification, Part I: The Besieger’s Playbook
Interesting to also look at how US troops finally got the upper hand in urban Iraq, with large amounts of concrete walls of varying sizes. In the film "American Sniper" you can see the walls getting put up under fire from an expert Iraqi sniper. Not sure about the accuracy of the film, but I believe the walls were pivotal in the success.
kreelman··on Arm China Has Gone Rogue
Could tech and manufacturing combine to become automated high-end tech?

Could robotics and aggressive automation of production lines make this shift? ...Or is it in fact more complex than it seems and the lead times for setting up these kinds of businesses too large to have a useful effect in the short/medium term?

kreelman··on Arm China Has Gone Rogue
"Skills follow activity, they do not lead activity. You learn by doing."

Nicely put. Thanks for pointing that out. That really resonates for me as I think about my career and skillset. I'm where I am now because of building things with somewhat inferior skills (risky) at the start and growing my skills . I need to repeat that with new tools/processes now. It all seems obvious looking back.

...Perhaps another skill is having the foresight to see what will be needed in the next phase. I did it then, hopefully I'll be able to do it again. A bit like running a small company of one person. Where is the next investment made?

China - the populace - seem to be pretty good at this.

kreelman··on Arm China Has Gone Rogue
I'm guessing "rouge" should be "rogue"?

Somewhere in this conversation I think someone made a typo and it's gained its own life in the comments, thinking it's the correct term?

However, in this case Softbank must be "rouge" (embarrassed) for their mistake... So perhaps it's kind of okay :)

kreelman··on The protocol designed to heal the ozone layer may also have fended off warming
Perhaps what you say is part of the problem, though usually MPG improves with newer vehichle versions?

Change it over to "Cheap EV for clunkers", the government could/should cover most of the financials and it's a win for the car owner and the environment.

I think it could be argued that it's the government's job to fund things like this. Vision is all that's required!

kreelman··on Mac: A Just-So Story (Lisp)
Common Lisp Macros are so neat. So good for writing nice little domain specific languages.

This part of "Practical Common Lisp" is a nice intro to them.
