kreek··on Ask HN: I have a day job, one kid and one on the way, how can I get things done?
I can say from experience that staying up late works for a while, but you'll eventually hit a wall and hate life. Now, if I have a side gig, I go to sleep almost as soon as my son is in bed (I say almost because you need to have some non-parent time). Then I wake up early, like 4am early. The benefit is you're fresh and hopefully have 2-3 hours before your oldest wakes up.

Of course when the baby arrives you can forget side gigs for about three months because it'll be madness. However it's only three months or so of crazyness, and they're only that small once so enjoy it! :)

Or if your tests are slow from loading Rails each time you can use Spork:

kreek··on Scribd says: Beat our programmers at a coding challenge
Wouldn't be so quick to down-vote his comment. I don't think scribd is stealing code or that submissions will be directly applicable, but there's some cross-over between a game like this and searching/crawling a db/docs/network. It's a great way for them to find devs with skills they need.
kreek··on Objectify: A Better Way to Build Rails Applications
Isn't this the command pattern, except instead of 'execute' you use 'call'?

Update: not saying that's a bad thing I used to be a Flex developer and all the frameworks used MVCS (Robotlegs being my favorite). Controllers are all commands and Services are used to retrieve data.

kreek··on Please don't let gaming consume your life
Some have questioned whether it was gaming that killed him, obviously playing video games won't give you a heart attack. However sitting in one place for hours on end could give you one (or a stroke). Playing games, coding, flying, in all those cases you should be getting up every now and then.
kreek··on Leap: A new gesture based interface for devices
Interfaces like this look cool in movies but your hands aren't 'designed' to be above your heart for an extended period of time. Now if you had something like a drafting table with a touch screen I'd be first in line.
kreek··on The Bastards Book of Ruby
Perfect timing for me, I'm helping a friend learn to program (in Ruby) with the goal of using his new found knowledge for data collection/analysis. It's like you wrote the book just for us. :)
kreek··on Show HN: I love Essential Mixes. So I made this.
Wow, looks (and sounds) great, listening to the Four Tet one as we speak :) It looks like all the sounds are hosted on SoundCloud, is this in your own pro+ account? I'm guessing this was the most economical way to host the files?
kreek··on I'm a former Miso engineer and the founders screwed me out of 10k
I agree, yes public shaming is free but he also just told the world he blew up a production database. That said I'll paraphrase Tom Watson when an employee of his made a $100,000 mistake "Are you kidding? We just spent $100,000 on your training".
kreek··on The Next SoundCloud
I was hoping for news on reducing comment spam. Repost looks cool but I fear "plz repost me" will be the new "hey, I love (but didn't actually listen to) your track, plz follow me and like me on facebook".
kreek··on Gmvault: gmail backup. Liberate your emails
The main issue, for me, is that "Gmvault Gmail Backup" and the logo are unbalanced. The logo is too big, and its colors could be more sophisticated. If those things were cleaned up it would look fine (unless you're allergic to boostrap).
kreek··on Free MIT Online Class teaches CS fundamentals using Python
Nice to see Shaw, Zed A. 'Learn Python the Hard Way' in the recommended textbooks :)
kreek··on Paul Graham has lost the plot
I would say it's because of consequence and anonymity, people do it because they won't be fined or arrested and no one knows about it.

People will do all sorts of crazy things if the system allows them to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment

kreek··on Inception Explained: a really cool scrolling animation of the plot
The first illustrated version of Inception is here http://disneycomics.free.fr/Ducks/Rosa/show.php?num=1&lo...
kreek··on Paul Graham has lost the plot
Not sure in the US but I remember hearing around £200 for day-time airplay (more listeners) to £40 at late-night is what an artist can expect to earn from a play on the BBC.
kreek··on Step by Step UI Design
Had the same issue, pressed esc to get out but that's not very intuitive.

Looks like he believes in copyright :)

kreek··on Send Them Your Money: A Campaign to Send The RIAA/MPAA Billions
To paraphrase James Taylor being a musician is a blue collar job, but at least blue collar jobs pay minimum wage. If the attitude conveyed in this site keeps up independent content creators are just going to say it's not worth it and all you'll be left with is the manufactured pablum the music industry serves up.
kreek··on A Brief Beginner's Guide To Clojure
Nice to see chapter 4 on setting up a dev environment early on, many clojure tutorials (and even a book I have) leave this out, or until the end. Working within a project is how you'll write real-world code so you might as well start with it.
kreek··on [dead]
This is pretty cool, with this app (and a lot of other HTML5 apps) I often have an issue where it acts as if I'm trying to select text as if I was going to copy and paste. The result is the entire app gets the 'text-selected' blue overlay. Anyone know of way to prevent this? I'm not sure that e.preventDefaut() stops it.
kreek··on Ira Glass on the secret of success
In my free time I produce electronic music. I was just browsing DJ Lucky Date's YouTube channel and thinking "man he has put in a lot time". In the last six months or so he has blown up, but the work is there for all to see.

Edit: the link for those interested http://www.youtube.com/user/luckydatevideos

kreek··on Dead for 32,000 Years, an Arctic Plant Is Revived
Only half-joking, isn't this how disaster movies start?
kreek··on Waking up at 5am to code
That's what I do, well not always 5am... but I try! Any way ever since exercise became a habit I no longer need caffeine after lunch. The bonus is if you're super busy then you can skip the workout and do some extra work.
kreek··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
Speaking of soccer in terms of entertainment it is almost as bad as Hollywood and in some areas worse. Like Hollywood all online deals are careful not on step on established players toes (DirectTV, TimeWarner, et al). You can pay $15/month to watch games live online, but any game involving marquee teams is delayed.

The FA in England takes it a step further and doesn't even allow unauthorized publication of fixtures and statistics. Fan blogs can't post upcoming matches unless they pay a annual fee. A license to display statistics in any media starts at 5,000 pounds ($7,770).

A few years back they sued every blog that listed upcoming matches. Suing your biggest fans! It's madness.

kreek··on ClojureDocs: Community-Powered Clojure Documentation and Examples
This is great. Docs, for me, are so much better with examples. I'm not the biggest PHP fan but their community powered docs never left me wondering how to use, and alternative uses for, a function.
kreek··on 63% Prefer a Dark Themed Text Editor
I use both, I think it came out of not being able to edit eclipse's themes easily. So static languages I code in light themes and dynamic I go to the dark side. I've converting to one or the other but I think it helps with the mental mode switching, light theme ok I'm in static land.
kreek··on Desingineer – the mythical person every startup is looking for
They exist, but engineering pays so much more, while still filling the need to create so 'Desingineers' choose development over design.

kreek··on Massive Ruby speed boost with JRuby and Java 7.
Slightly off topic but does anyone know if Java 7 would allow fork to work in JRuby?
