I've taken to calling them heisenbugs.
krazydad··on ChucK: Strongly-timed, Concurrent, and On-the-fly Music Programming Language
I've been working on building a set of basic music patches simultaneously in ChucK, PureData, SuperCollider and Pyo. The idea is to produce patches which produce the identical sound, to illustrate the differences between the music languages.

I have a long background as a C programmer. Because ChucK is C-like, I have had the least trouble learning it, of the 4 languages mentioned above. The simple stuff I implement in ChucK tends to work the first time. However, my musician friends who are not C programmers tend to find visual patching languages (like PureData and Max) far more intuitive.

Performance-wise, ChucK seems to me to be the least performant of the 4 mentioned above, however, for my needs it works fine, and I look forward to doing more work with it.

And Alanis Morissette trumps Irony. Isn't it, though?

So much simpler if you simply remove 4 people from the 5-person team.
krazydad··on Build Your Own Lockitron With Twilio, Arduino, and Node.js
Cool project. I recently did a similar project that involved controlling an Arduino from Node.JS. A friend suggested I use Firmata, which is a standard protocol for talking to Arduinos via the serial port.

http://firmata.org/wiki/Main_Page

Very painless to use, and the script for the Arduino is included on the Aruidino SDK examples menu. You can get up and running in Node.JS in just a few lines of code.

For what it's worth, my project involved playing the brass bells on a christmas ornament from a game of 2048.

krazydad··on It Is Time For Basic Income
I am not at all an economist, but I wonder: if everyone had the same amount of fixed income (in addition to whatever else they made from their jobs), wouldn't there be continual inflation, rendering that money worthless? Wouldn't the fixed income become the new zero income?

Also: How does Macdonalds work in this situation, if the fixed income "replaces" minimum wage. Does Macdonalds pay on top of this wage? Do they double it? Do they pay zero? If they pay zero, what incentives workers to work at Macdonalds?

krazydad··on Flappy 2048
I think you're overstating this, any number of simple games have been reproduced and virally spread. Tetris comes to mind. When that came out in the 80s, I was one of many who quickly produced a playable version and posted it to local bulletin boards. Similarly, many of the games discussed in Martin Gardner's and A.K. Dewdney's columns in Scientific American got pretty wide play (Conway's Life and CoreWar come to mind).

The scale and spread of these particular memes is larger and faster due to easier-to-use tools for cloning previous efforts (such as git/github), and more pervasive social media.

They are a few months late from meeting Moore's law. Their 64GB microSD card came out on Sep 18th, 2011.

Beginning Python 2.x users are going to be confused by slide 2, which says that division produces floats. Not in my Python they don't!
krazydad··on Project Euler
Even though I know python fairly decently, I found working on Project Euler problems improved my Python skills a lot - in particular, I had not had much awareness, nor need for the 'yield' command, but I ended up using it a lot on PE problems.
krazydad··on Quietnet: Chat client that works over near-ultrasonic sound
Make sure you are in a quiet room (with the AC off). It worked for me on a Macbook retina, but started to fail when the AC turned on.
krazydad··on Quietnet: Chat client that works over near-ultrasonic sound
Agreed. This particular app starts to fail badly when the AC is on my current room. Airplanes are much, much, worse.
krazydad··on 'Carmack Lines': Playing with Javascript
I've been making these for a long time. One of my favorites is (x XOR y) MOD 3 != 0

((x ^ y) % 3) != 0

Other primes like 5 and 7 look interesting as well.

However, the "original" PNG image linked in the article does not contain the plain-text described in the article (at least, not visible in my hex editor). The pixels do contain some artifacts in the lower bits, though.

Cool service, but the pricing is insanely high. My piddly website gets 100k uniques a month, which would cost $600 to track. Kraaaazy.
