krautburglar··on X offices raided in France as UK opens fresh investigation into Grok
Raid all of them. Raid Google. Raid Facebook. Raid Apple. Raid Microsoft. Big tech has gotten away with everything from fraud[0] to murder[1] for decades. Black outfits. Rappel lines. Automatics. Touch that server Prakesh, and you won't live to touch another.

krautburglar··on Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support
From your perspective, what would be an "OS done right"? I have a running list of things I would change in Unix, but replacing sysvinit with systemd's one-ring-to-rule-them-all would not be on it.
krautburglar··on Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support
The UNIX way is still doing fine on OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, Alpine, Gentoo... Poetteringware only won on the distros selling support contracts. "Fixing" what wasn't broken is great for those businesses.
krautburglar··on Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support
But that book is a waste. It is just MIT dunning-krugerites who were salty that LISP machines never took off. When it comes to real life, the bell labs approach won, and for several good reasons. Not "worse is better" (another dunning-krugerite cope), but "less is more."
krautburglar··on Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support
Compared to plan9, past its sell-by date. Compared to redhat poetteringware, I will continue to attend services.
krautburglar··on Starlink updates privacy policy to allow consumer data to train
We need another young Kary, but using shrapnel instead of frogs.

krautburglar··on Did a celebrated researcher obscure a baby's poisoning?
Tylenol 3 is an old & inexpensive medication. One has to wonder if one of Koren's undisclosed revenue sources was a manufacturer of pricier on-patent opioids (like Sackler).
krautburglar··on Celebrities say they are being censored by TikTok after speaking out against ICE
That a handful of private companies (of which, Ellison has big investments in several) have cornered the market on NAND and DRAM -- with some sources saying that these reservations extend into 2029 -- should be far more concerning. They're sprinting toward super-intelligence, while potential competitors can't even buy equipment. Both pro-immigrant and anti-immigrant arguments will seem fatuous when we are all slaves.
krautburglar··on Show HN: Sparrow-1 – Audio-native model for human-level turn-taking without ASR
Such things were doing a good-enough job scamming the elderly as it is--even with the silence-based delays.
krautburglar··on Everything you never wanted to know about file locking (2010)
It would be nice to have a unix for the new millenium--one that discards everything the greybeards deem a mistake. The window of opportunity is closing. We won't have them much longer.
krautburglar··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
The hole-one visa... how fitting.
krautburglar··on Designing an IPv6-native P2P transport – lessons from building I6P
Easy & reliable p2p would upset so many apple carts. I get the feeling that if something really started taking root in that space, the big boys would push for a new obstruction--i.e. NATv6 or some such thing--to put the genie back in the bottle. And since so many people "fake it 'til they make it", they will swallow those worms like eager baby birds. Anyone who rejects the worms will be branded a heretic.
krautburglar··on Don't fall into the anti-AI hype
"democratizing" as in "I steal everybody's shit, make most content creators go bankrupt, then put it all in an LLM behind a paywall." Privatization of all human knowledge--past, present, & future. They own both parties, so it's not like anyone is going to vote their way out of this one--unless one considers guillotines a form of voting.
krautburglar··on Poison Fountain
Don Hopkins is the archetype of this industry. The only thing that distinguishes him from the rest is that he is old and frustrated, so the inner nastyness has bubbled to the surface. We all have a little Don Hopkins inside of us. That is why we are here. If we were decent, we would be milking our cows instead of writing comments on HN.
krautburglar··on Poison Fountain
Google has the internet by the balls. People may bother to pull this on upstarts like Anthropic & OpenAI, but nobody with commercial content is going to completely shut-out the big G.
krautburglar··on A battle over Canada’s mystery brain disease
Anyone have a link to the JAMA paper?
krautburglar··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
This person is a living caricature. If Ford wanted to sell more F350s, their best advertisers could do no better than this (man's?) mastodon.
krautburglar··on Iran vows regime will "not back down" as web blackout continues
Of course they were the best educated. Their parents could afford the best educations money can buy after selling their country out to western corporations. The Shah was a puppet. His entourage, puppets.
krautburglar··on Iran vows regime will "not back down" as web blackout continues
> it is a nasty group of medieval characters,

Still better than having western corporations loot the hell out of your country, like they did to Russia in the 90s, or what AICO did after it got Mossadegh out of the way.

> robotic zombies who will, upon a command of the CIA, go into the streets...

Money goes a long way, even in countries that aren't poor. For a country as heavily sanctioned as Iran, the CIA could buy out all of their politicians and all of their journalists several times over. We already saw this with "arab spring" in Egypt. Five-eyes and company con terminally online city kids into thinking the country is behind them, city kids protest and weaken the government, the peasants take notice and realize, "Hey, if these spoiled kids can topple the government, just imagine what we can do!", so instead of getting gay rights and feminism, they get the Muslim Brotherhood.

krautburglar··on I program without syntax highlighting
The nice thing about syntax highlighting is that it acts as a lightweight validator. I know I have a syntax error as soon as the colors go crazy in vim, and I can find it where the colors break.
krautburglar··on How did TVs get so cheap?
TV is a mind-control system. Even if they were expensive to make, they would still be given to the proles at minimal cost.
krautburglar··on Why the trans flag emoji is the 5-codepoint sequence it is
I could give a shit about codepoints. Multilingual text is hard enough as it is. The icons-with-combiners were an unnecessary complication. The site we are commenting on rejects them, and rightly so.
krautburglar··on Why the trans flag emoji is the 5-codepoint sequence it is
I wish they stuck to languages only, instead of branching out into modern hieroglyphics. There are enough forces hacking away at literacy as it is. Flags are particularly wasteful, given that nations and movements can be highly ephemeral.
krautburglar··on The PGP problem (2019)
Looking at the revenues and the salaries, nonprofit doesn't mean much these days.
krautburglar··on Windows 11 Outperforming Linux on an Intel Arrow Lake H Laptop
Wonder if it has something to do with licensed features:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46002989

(i.e. no license, have to fallback to unaccelerated software-only implementation)

krautburglar··on On privacy and control
After doing this for 25 years, I have come to the conclusion that one should stick to lightweight tools as much as possible. Complex ones are far more vulnerable to supply chain attacks--be they illegal ones from hackers, or legal ones from business. I have had so many great tools (open source and proprietary) rug-pulled from beneath me. Dev sells out, then the product is either retired or enshittified. What if someone tried to enshittify awk? Good luck with that. There are dozens to choose from. Even with LLMs, they can't enshittify them all.

The future is suckless philosophy.

krautburglar··on Ask HN: Payload in Amazon "Shipped" Emails
Turns out it is some marketing bullshit to force what some mail clients show in the preview. They use a large pad of joiners / combiners / soft punctuation / etc. to prevent the mail client from choosing text after the pad for the content preview.
krautburglar··on Ask HN: Payload in Amazon "Shipped" Emails
The LLM was looping. :-)
krautburglar··on The Ultimate Windows Utility (2022)
In 2025, we have so many OSes to choose from that don’t have to be de-bulked of tumors. Linux, BSD, Redox, OSX… nowhere to go but up from win11.
krautburglar··on The Ultimate Windows Utility (2022)
This genre is for those who would rather cope with abuse than confront it.
