kraig··on Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic
I get why Verizon is selling it, but I don't get why Automattic buying it is news.

kraig··on Camera and microphone require HTTPS in Firefox 68
FWIW I had one of these on my laptop and the screen now has a crack that started right where this was.
kraig··on Terraform 0.12
IMO both of you guys should take a look at Pulumi. You could still use a makefile but using their TS clients to access the APIs is much more intuitive and easier to diagnose than shell scripts.
kraig··on Terraform 0.12
IMO they should have dumped HCL once they caught a whiff of what Pulumi is up to, much rather go with actual languages that when you learn them, you pick up some valued knowledge. You can also do a whole lot more with Typescript than you can with HCL 2.
kraig··on Epic’s Stunning RTX-Powered Ray-Tracing Demo Wows GDC
This looks great.

In a few short years I'll be able to get a VR headset and install a computer inside of one of these games so I can work remote from basically any virtual world. Then i'll only need to unplug and face reality to get the Postmates.

kraig··on U.S. to ground Boeing 737 Max 8
"Fehrm said Boeing must have added this system on the MAX because when the angle of attack is high this model is less stable compared to prior 737 variants. That’s because the MAX has bigger, heavier engines that are also cantilevered further forward on the wing to provide more ground clearance. That changes the center of gravity."

kraig··on British Museum realises 'vase' is in fact an ancient mace-head upside down
considering how some museums seem like they are 75% ancient vases and cups, it makes you wonder what else is out there
kraig··on Sears has another chance to avoid closing down
I think amazon got to play by different rules though, it would be a very different thing for an established company like Sears to reinvest all of its profits into growing its digital platform in the 90s, 00s, or even now. There is no way investors would have stayed on for that ride.
kraig··on What’s the rush? The power of a slow morning
What reasons? It takes some discipline but I get to bed by 10pm pretty regularly because I wake up at 6am and at the gym daily at 7:20. If I am not asleep by 10:30pm my morning suffers, so I make sure I stop myself to get the sleep I need. In general that means starting to wind down after 9pm (usually 9:30) and then doing some light reading.
kraig··on No Tuition, but You Pay a Percentage of Your Income if You Find a Job
IMO a great idea and could flip the table on ivy league schools and other institutions that favor political connections over an individuals potential.
kraig··on [dead]
+1, post strikes me as a bit paranoid
kraig··on Meat-free 'Impossible Burger 2.0' tastes even closer to the real deal
I think a lot of the satiated feeling is a mental thing, as I noticed this a lot when I first went vegan, I would eat a lot of fake meats and veganized meals of things I was used to. After time your can adjust away from that and you can feel like you ate a filling meal even if was just a large salad or a decent sandwich.
kraig··on Meat-free 'Impossible Burger 2.0' tastes even closer to the real deal
I think this type of thing is more important to get non-vegan people to eat less animals than to provide options to vegans. Anyone who has been eating vegan or vegetarian for some time is already going to appreciate the nuances in foods, while a great meat substitute is important for the meat eaters who think they can't have a meal without some "protein" on the plate.
kraig··on Meat-free 'Impossible Burger 2.0' tastes even closer to the real deal
at what point is it good enough to change to an alternative consistently? for the most part we enjoy foods that we are used to eating, if you change your habits to a non-bone based stew in a matter of time you will begin to favor those flavors instead.

kraig··on MoviePass Slashes Offering to Three Films a Month
most of the theaters around here are AMC and they offer 3/week for 20 bucks now. without the limitations+additions on crappy screens, busy night fees, etc.

i wonder if the new terms will be profitable enough for them to stay in business for the long haul.

kraig··on The Decline of the MacBook Pro
i've been typing for more than 20 years and i do not get the fuss over keyboards, i can type on any of them with very little adjustments. i haven't had a problem with dust on the latest MBP either, and i treat mine pretty poorly.
kraig··on Four years after its release, Kubernetes has come a long way
sometimes i wonder how openstack would have done if it was written in go
kraig··on Four years after its release, Kubernetes has come a long way
the distributed systems knowledge that you would pick up by learning can be valuable in designing your saas in a way that will scale if your business grows.

i may be generalizing, but it comes down to balancing your software architecture in a way that is quick for you to iterate on now vs scaling out to support an expanding business. there is a comment further up about a monolithic deployment -- great for right now but if his business grows 100x it will be difficult/expensive to scale without significant changes.

starting with the seeds in place can remove a lot of pain later, so things like containers may not be a huge win to you today, you should consider what value they may bring down the road

kraig··on Amazon EKS – Now Generally Available

kraig··on African elephants are migrating to safety, telling each other how to get there
Elephants are known to knock down trees and vegetation to make it easier to get to the things they want. If you have ever been on a safari you will see how easy it is to spot if there are elephants near by, they destroy just about everything in their path. AFAIK the only animal that regularly does this.

I don't know if modifying the environment for your purposes is consideration for being a person, but as humans we are often poor at understanding intelligence, comprehension, and empathy when something doesn't speak our native tongue.
