krageon··on "Disturbing" new detail emerges about DeepSeek and what it does with your data
You are vastly more likely to be murdered by the US unless you're rich and white.
krageon··on "Disturbing" new detail emerges about DeepSeek and what it does with your data
Propaganda is timeless because it keeps working. You can see it working right here in the comments.
krageon··on DeepSeek gives Europe's tech firms a chance to catch up
They did brexit and started mattering even less than they already did: Not at all.
krageon··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
This is outrage bait you have fallen prey to. Now you're spreading it. You're better than this.
krageon··on Bacteria (and their metabolites) and depression
They could be helping someone who actually needs it. Asking for time you don't need is unethical.
krageon··on DeepSeek's Hidden Bias: How We Cut It by 76% Without Performance Loss
It is not reasonable to assume good faith in cases where it never is. You must assume where it might be, but that is where it stops.
krageon··on DeepSeek's Hidden Bias: How We Cut It by 76% Without Performance Loss
It's a little dogwhistle implying prejudice is good, actually.
krageon··on We tried out DeepSeek. It worked well, until we asked it about Tiananmen Square
Very nearly every LLM has these issues, but if it's chinese it suddenly deserves to be mentioned. It's pretty tiring witnessing unrepentant racism again and again and I wish people would stop.
krageon··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
You can literally see ADHD in a brain scan, especially if you contrast it with after someone has taken the proper medication for it. This isn't some sort of witchcraft, it's a physical thing that's measurable.
krageon··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
It's not that it sucks to have this brought up, it's that the people who do are pretty consistently dismissive and infantilising about it. Naturally, folks that this happens to develop an aversion to people that say the same thing for the millionth time. It's not novel, it's not interesting (in that it never leads anywhere novel either) and it's frequently hostile.
krageon··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
I have had the same issue for about as long and it's been a bear of a time to get anything done with it. Kudo's to you for taking a trip to have a treatment that might work done! It is very hard to take a lot of initiative and keep pushing (at least for me) with long covid.
krageon··on Bacteria (and their metabolites) and depression
It's absorbed through the skin, so that doesn't actually solve the issue of having it in your body.
krageon··on I trusted an LLM, now I'm on day 4 of an afternoon project
It's worthwhile because you cannot do everything and often it is better to have someone far worse than you work on a problem than to just ignore it.
krageon··on Calm tech certification "rewards" less distracting tech
To say you have fallen for a political play is not a personal attack. It is not some sort of personal failing, but a trap set for you. Informing you of that is a nice thing this person has chosen to do for you.
krageon··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
This is really cool, I think this may be the first time I watch one of these threads and be tempted to get something
krageon··on ‘With brain preservation, nobody has to die’
The arguments your making have a hypothesis that isn't supported by your examples. Mostly because they're not falsifiable. They're therefore incredibly uninteresting.
krageon··on Contribution of childhood lead exposure to psychopathology in the US
We won't find out "one day", we've long since found out. It just doesn't change shit because barely half of all humans can read with any comprehension (and this study implies the US achieves 80% reading with comprehension, so the bar is very low). Of the part that can read with any sort of skill, a significant fraction don't give a shit. The net result is that you're going to be poisoned, regardless of what we know.
krageon··on Contribution of childhood lead exposure to psychopathology in the US
So execute them. Problem solved.
krageon··on Nearly half of teenagers globally cannot read with comprehension
Belgium isn't exactly a bastion of solid infrastructure, nor is it incredibly well-known for the quality of it's education. Why is that country specifically so surprising for you?
krageon··on DuckDuckGo donates $25k to the Perl and Raku Foundation
Were you a contractor or did you have an actual employment contract?
krageon··on AI poetry is indistinguishable from human poetry and is rated more favorably
In a culinary conversation nobody is trying to make the case that the chicken mcnugget is objectively superior to fresh pasta in a handmade pesto sauce. So you don't need to tell people "please just go away with this mcnugget nonsense". You wouldn't be expected to explain why one is better than the other. Most people that taste food understand immediately what you mean.
krageon··on AI poetry is indistinguishable from human poetry and is rated more favorably
Sheer manpower doesn't make it good. You should have just made a point about entertainment, which it definitely does provide. A case can be made that this was the only thing they were going for. You would have had a good point. Implying that just because a lot of people did a thing together that means it has merit is kind of a strange thing to say. It's definitely not self-evident and you make no attempt to elaborate on it.
krageon··on DuckDuckGo donates $25k to the Perl and Raku Foundation
You weren't all that explicit, and GP responded to your comment as written. There really is no call for being this rude just because you think you were misunderstood.
krageon··on DuckDuckGo donates $25k to the Perl and Raku Foundation
They don't pay very well. I can't imagine the median in amsterdam is very good if that really was 50% higher
krageon··on Blizzard's pulling of Warcraft I and II tests GOG's new Preservation Program
starcraft 2 was really cool when it came out, but it is not good now. And you can't play an old patch because it's always online
krageon··on Breaking the 4Chan CAPTCHA
If you spend any time at all at a cloud hosting provider, you'll quickly learn there are only a few bad countries. It's not really Russia IME, it is mostly India and China. If you block those two, you're going to eliminate 99% of your abuse.
krageon··on Noise-canceling single-layer woven silk and cotton fabric
I spent years implementing natural language processing papers and I learned to my incredible dismay most of them are incredibly simple and do their level best to hide this by writing the most impenetrable prose you can find. Sometimes I sincerely miss being a child and believing most people are doing their best and aren't fundamentally kind of shit.
krageon··on Only buy a magnetic keyboard for gaming
If you can't be detected then it can't be illegal. That makes the discussion of whether or not it's cheating immaterial.

What you're describing in your second paragraph is how good anticheat works. It is inevitable and unfortunate (from the perspective of GP) that it must be tuned to near-olympic performance as the cap (or you risk punishing people who are just good, which is a really bad idea).

edit: Of course, once you go down this rabbithole you start realising that olympic level performance is a freak accident of genetics, which is like having your own little biological "cheat". It makes you categorically better than other people at specific things. We return to the statement that figuring out whether that's cheating is immaterial. To my mind it's also a waste of time.

krageon··on How Japanese black companies oppress workers (2014)
This would read significantly less like empty trolling or virtue signalling if you added why you think it is culturally the case that the "black" in "black companies" is somehow related to skin colour (and not, say, the inherent danger of an unlit environment - such as at night).

This would have a nice side-effect of you almost certainly realising you are wrong - as the connotation as far as I'm aware doesn't have racist overtones. In this way you'd be doing yourself a service because you'd need to be angry over less things and you'd be doing everyone else a service because they wouldn't read something so clearly born from a US-centric world view. A case could be made that having one of those and not bothering to learn about other cultures is itself fairly xenophobic.

krageon··on Social media ban for children under 16 is introduced in Australia's Parliament
Nobody should get the news, it's shit and 99% of it doesn't even matter. The remainder is so local or so not really news that you don't need a usual outlet anyway.
