kossTKR··on Falcon 40B LLM (which beats Llama) now Apache 2.0
The comments seem to conclude that it was actually nerfed just not the API.
kossTKR··on Targeted attack on our management with the Triangulation Trojan
Adjacent topic but i have a friend who told me buying a refurbished iPhone from a local shop was a bad idea from a security perspective.

Is this true? I thought a hard reset and secure enclave etc. was enough? Can you put "stuff" in it that survives to a new user?

kossTKR··on Falcon 40B LLM (which beats Llama) now Apache 2.0
Very cool but how does this compare to GPT-4 (before it was nerfed)?

I feel like the best benchmark atm is the orig gpt-4 version.

kossTKR··on Examples using Photoshop’s new “Generative Fill” feature
No, these are just bad examples. For much more impressive examples with no crops, check out: https://twitter.com/mrgreen/status/1663107572902027265
kossTKR··on Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
So true. And don’t forget that these agencies answer to an elite group of people that benefit from specific world orders that promote various industrial complexes transnationally.

And people that get too specific get daphnied, lombardied, assanged or jfk’ed.

Or maybe not, but you won't find out because all media above a certain threshold is in a spotlight, and has been since before CIA bragged about its all encompassing media operations 50+ years ago.

I remember this info being somewhat widespread when the internet was still new, but wikis, forums and blogs are slowly being disappeared from search or drowned in noise while clownish conspiracies have conveniently smoke-screened all attempts to create an alternative to the status quo.

kossTKR··on Mastering Monero: The future of private transactions [pdf] (2019)
Monero is not private. I remember reading about this in 2018. Extremely dishonest to ignore this. There's even comments here spelling it out. Besides that it's marketingspeak through and through in that post.

kossTKR··on Mastering Monero: The future of private transactions [pdf] (2019)
Yes stopping crypto shilling spam that that lies to users is the same as banning books, got it.
kossTKR··on Mastering Monero: The future of private transactions [pdf] (2019)
I don't think you're bursting his bubble. The post is 100% sinister marketing especially when it's a huge lie, and has been for 4+ years.
kossTKR··on Agent GPT – Assemble, configure, and deploy autonomous AI Agents in the browser
Interesting. So this combined with the fact that other comment say this is an incredibly thin wrapper on GPT-4 makes this some kind of investment bait?

I wonder how profitable selling of non-products is with marketing like this.

kossTKR··on Agent GPT – Assemble, configure, and deploy autonomous AI Agents in the browser
Almost 23k stars!? Isn't that kind of crazy for a new niche project like this you've never heard of?
kossTKR··on Update on Sharing
This seems like a weirdly public rollout.

I've always had the intuition that bigcorps with relaxed anti piracy enforcement were better off because of networks effects and goodwill.

This honestly makes me want to cancel my subscription.

Why not just silently do this? What's the actual deal here?

kossTKR··on We will be shutting down neeva.com
Never heard of Neeva either.

Sometimes i wonder how much "business" is about getting gov. subsidies, grants or scamming the masses, then distributing wealth to friends and family horizontally to elite peers.

Amounts that seem absurd to billions of working class people disappear on the daily apparently with zero value ever created - i've seen this happen enough times IRL to realise that most business is part performance, part deception around very little actual core value, - businesstheater almost.

kossTKR··on Social network ad targeting can “listen into” conversations using “live photos”
Wait isn't the magic here that you do exactly that; choose your still photo from the video - thats what you do with the timeline picker in ios?

In other words the video is exactly the same quality as the photo in each frame so you can pick a moment a second later for example if you film something fast moving.

Does anyone know how it works and isn't gigabytes in size?

kossTKR··on User Driven UI
I've always found it weird that a "function search" hasn't become more mainstream.

It's easy to implement without AI. Just make a big list of your functions, describe them verbosely, and give them a link - now let the user search for what they want to do and send them there.

I remember Rhino3d having this 10 years ago and it was amazing while all kinds of daws, editing programs, desks etc. would be a jungle to navigate or just have a "docs" or "help pdfs" - such a waste of time to look through.

In general this kind of navigation has been overlooked for decades.

kossTKR··on Google Analytics 4 was frustrating, so we built our own analytics service
The GA4 interface along with Ads and some of the Cloud interfaces are so bizarrely complex it's comical.

I wonder what went wrong, but i'm so happy to not trapped in that hellscape anymore.

I remember it could take my team a week to even find the page something was on, or figure out the grotesquely convoluted methodology or naming scheme they had come up with for some simple task from 100 versions of their docs.

kossTKR··on GitHub Incident
Is this because of Microsoft? If so, why? Are they bad at cloud?
kossTKR··on AI-generated beer commercial contains joyful monstrosities, goes viral
"GPT-4 was used for the script, which sounds plenty plausible to me considering that it’s gibberish."

Since when is GPT-4 gibberish?

It can produce a coherent synopsis for a whole movie in perfect style and language and it will per default.

You really have to go out of your way to make it produce anything resembling bizarre or absurd like this.

That said i get why it's a fun aesthetic but the bullshit is annoying.

kossTKR··on Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical
I agree but the alternative is the the end of HN + the end of the rest of the open internet in a year or five.

When you soon will only meet bots that are trying to manipulate you or sell you something - the value for everyone goes to zero pretty quickly.

I'm not sure how this will be solved besides most people ditching the open internet and 100% engaging in tiny groups of people they already know the mental capacities of.

Christ, this really is the end of the "social internet" where you could find inspiration and new perspectives isn't it?

kossTKR··on MIT 6.S191: Recurrent Neural Networks, Transformers, and Attention [video]
Exactly. Unfortunately hackernews these days is huge fans of the military and the richest classes without much question.

Psyops don't exist, research journalism is tinfoilhattery and all science is awesome science.

Question one state and you're apparently fan of another, it's become the perfect setup for the status quo.

In reality the US intelligentsia is tiny and unfathomably powerful, an octopus with its arms deep in everything "academia" and technology, this is apparently mind boggling even after a myriad of leaks over the last 30 years, and no one dares to do even the simplest network analysis because of an enormous amount of media controlled shitcoating.

There's absolutely nothing "hacker" in hackernews anymore.

kossTKR··on NASA validates revolutionary propulsion design for deep space missions
25% sounds super disappointing from a laymans perspective and not very "revolutionary" in the grand scheme of time and space.

Can't wait until AI will be able to iterate advanced engineering designs in simulation space at incredible speed.

kossTKR··on Llama.cpp 30B runs with only 6GB of RAM now
Interesting, i wonder how it scales.
kossTKR··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
I've pretty much ignored all of the superficial political theatre but noticed the actual algo worsening over the last 6 months.

I get way to much random crap now, promoted tweets, "thing that might interest me", users that seem to never get on my feed etc.

Twitter seems to go in the direction of all other social media, feeds that are 100% digital crack with no way to control your media diet.

kossTKR··on Llama.cpp 30B runs with only 6GB of RAM now
Does this mean that we can also run the 60B model on a 16GB ram computer now?

I have the M2 air and can't wait until further optimisation with the Neural Engine / multicore gpu + shared ram etc.

I find it absolutely mind boggling that GPT-3.5(4?) level quality may be within reach locally on my $1500 laptop / $800 m2 mini.

kossTKR··on AI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projects
GPT-4 is absolutely incredible but the usage-cap at the moment makes it annoying to work with.

8 questions per hour (25 per 3 hours), is not a lot to work with for paying users - it started being like 10x higher and they've announced it may go down even further.

I wonder if Azure can scale with the insane adoption rate and if it's profitable at the moment?

kossTKR··on What we still don’t know about how A.I. is trained
I agree, and the world is dynamic, it's just not as dynamic as especially american collective consciousness would have you believe.

There is very little social mobility, wealth transfers very solidly between generations at the absolute top and organisation around PR and Politics is tightly integrated in this class.

Off course you can always fall from grace, but that does not in any way diminish the collective power of this class. That's why it's called a class and not a "person" or one singular family or group of people that clownish conspiracy theories would have you believe.

A good primer to the historical context could be this new book from Cambridge: "The Power of Ritual in Prehistory: Secret Societies and Origins of Social Complexity".

Elites have always formed tightly knit clubs that most couldn't get into.

This is not a reductive theory, it's based on solid academic research on wealth transfer and academic books like the one above.

It's a almost like a biological or physical property of advanced civilizations - like social patterns seen emerging in larger groups of monkeys, or a precursor to the labour divisions seen in ant hives - there's clear distinctions set fourth for an individual at birth or because of location or family, and no amount of ideology is able to change this unless very, very lucky - this is mirrored in the social mobility data.

kossTKR··on What we still don’t know about how A.I. is trained
From a european perspective even asking the question "why should be scared of these so called elites" is so bizarre it's almost frightening, i'm sorry.

It's a testament to the absurd amount of philanthropic whitewashing, PR and media control these billionaries hold.

"Elites" have conspired to exploit the masses throughout 5000 years of civilisation, it's simply a fact of history.

It's almost physically impossible to comprehend the power a group of billionaires has to pull and push issues, narratives, law, war and discourse in general, especially when the masses have zero organisation as a counterweight, and when numbers like "trillion" just doesn't register in any meaningful way in regular people.

kossTKR··on What we still don’t know about how A.I. is trained
The Dawn of PR is just a good starting point. You can read Machiavelli or study the politics of the roman empire - all hierarchical societies tend to function like this, it's a like a mathematical distribution.

The New Deal along with social democracy in europe was a bargaining deal against the revolutionary forces existing at the time. After this was stamped out the Gini coefficient started to rise when the masses had no alternatives and global trade and outsourcing increasingly obscurred the falling realwages.

kossTKR··on What we still don’t know about how A.I. is trained
Yes, this is the real dark future right here.

It will be a continuation though.

The uppermost echelons of society have waged information warfare since the dawn of modern PR in the beginning of the 20'th century. Lots of theory on this have apparently been memoryholed, but it's easy to just start with the genealogy around Edward Bernais and the plutocracy and robber baron families still existing in the interwar period.

The masses don't really think about or realise that manufactured circus and foreverwars have been going on for a hundred years while a microscopic elite that controls the media and various organs in the state have been siphoning most wealth towards themselves in a increasingly dense cloud of smoke, while promoting rebranded ideologies for the genpop and systems of control that has become advanced cybernetic systems that steer the flow of information 100% from top to bottom.

The sad thing is that you could deduce this in the noise if you visited the last remnants of actual research journalism on the internet, but that will end now.

So where is one going to get to know the powerstructures of the world? Old physical libraries only, some dude on the corner, some "crazy guy" with a harddisk from before AI took over.

kossTKR··on Tell HN: Reddit Has Disabled i.reddit.com
I still find it fascinating how bad the "new reddit" was and still is.

It is so badly coded there was an entire subreddit dedicated to finding bugs for a year or two that they simply shut down after a megathread analysed the amateurish spaghetti code that made up the frontend; race conditions, code duplication and library hell was everywhere.

It's still super sluggish and the pop-over functionality is still so laughably brittle that it's a mystery to me how this was coded by a professional team.

kossTKR··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
Scaling + ease of use.

Compare:

1) Use lots of time to find person who can impersonate specific other person. Unless you give them a lot of money or threats to shut up you can't use them to real time decieve someone.

2) Clone 1 million voices from tiktok in 1 minute. Contact 10 million relatives with a synth voice that is intelligent enough to answer questions.

We will have billions of AI's, containers, programs, agents running around trying to deceive absolutely everyone and their grandmother 24/7 soon.
