kossTKR··on Sidekick: Local-first native macOS LLM app
Just checked some Genmojis created on reddit, wow, i don't know how that got approved. I'm all for creativity and freedom but it's 100% not apples brand.

And they just postponed AI-Siri to 2026 after promising it for iPhone 16. I seriously don't get how it can be that hard. Small model trained on various app API's, a checker model that double checks, an approve this action button. Not that hard.

kossTKR··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
One of the craziest ones are basic search in osx has been broken for 10 years now - it might work for a while but for power users it almost always gets weird then stops working.

Another wild one is syncing photos between iphone and mac meant ‘this photo will sync at random point in the next 5 days’ - it’s just recently been fixed after like 8 years of not working.

And don’t even try to use their stupidly simple proprietary apps like Numbers where basic spreadsheet functionality is bizarre or missing.

Mac is still my favourite but i don’t get why a trillion dollar company can’t fix their software for what’s ‘pennies’ for them.

kossTKR··on GPT-4.5: "Not a frontier model"?
And OpenAI based their tech on a Google paper again building on years of public academic research so what's the point exactly here?

OpenAI was just first out of the gates, there'll always be some company that's first, essence is how they handle their leadership, and they've sadly been absolutely terrible and scummy.

Actually i think Google was a pretty good example of the exact opposite, decades of "actually not being evil", while openAI switched up 1 second after launch.

kossTKR··on GPT-4.5
Totally agree, i think the gargantuan hidden pre prompts, censorship through reinforcement learning and whatever has killed most creativity.

The newer models are incredible, but the tone is just soul sucking even when it tries to be "looser" in the later iterations.

kossTKR··on Johnny.Decimal – A system to organise your life
Exactly. Intricate systems are pure noise for me, a simple MD file opened in a texteditor like Sublime is enough, or as you say just a simple taggable system or really just a bunch of files in folder - as long as you have great search you'll find stuff in no time and forget most as you should.

I personnaly just have a huge file with various notes, text, todos or whatever for each year divided into days, then i can just scroll up through days, or search to find out what i did and what day - some days have nothing, some have lots. Some topics / projects get their own file.

kossTKR··on DOGE employees ordered to stop using Slack
"He's one of the most honest and truthful people in the world, and has been for years."

You know what this is simply getting to idiotic now. Why are comments this daft and childish allowed here now? I know it's a "way of speaking" among certain trolling Trump/Musk supporters but it's so unfathomably shameless and idolising i'm not sure what's going on exactly.

If people like you are over 20 years old, then wow. "He's the most honest person in the world", literally come on now even if you believe in his way of doing things.

kossTKR··on [dead]
As a european i find the scapegoating of yet another "foreign evil country" laughable after watching the Sackler family documentary.

You guys created this mess yourselves, through deregulation and extreme predatory capitalism pushing pills to everyone and their mother.

It's the chinese, it's a middle eastern man with a beard, it's a russian, it's a communist from cuba, it's the japanese, it's the italian, it's the irish, and the list goes on forever. It's definitely never the american oligarchs.

kossTKR··on They stole my voice with AI
Yep, im sure lots of people have written a lot of random stuff on a lot of forums that should absolutely stay anonymous from gossip to family secrets to honesty about career/workplace and what not.

If stylometric analysis runs on all comments on the internet then yeah.

Bad things will happen, very very bad.

I honestly think it should be at least illegal to do this kind of analysis because it'll be a treasure trove for the commercial sector to mine this data correlated to real people not to think of the destruction in millions of people with personal anonymous blogs etc.

Actually thinking about it further you could also easily group people political affiliations, and all kinds of other thoughts, dark, dark stuff!

kossTKR··on What happened to the Japanese PC platforms?
There was also the Sony Vaio Laptop line that i remember as being quite a good product?

But yeah they all seemed to die out.

kossTKR··on Developing a Modern Full-Stack Application: Choosing the Right Tech Stack
What kind of application are you talking about? I agree to a degree but we haven't run into performance issues with say 100k users, what traffic did you handle, what was the business case?

Again sounds like you are running some complex math heavy operation like say a weather service, national taxi service with lots of pathfinding, a global gaming platform etc?

Curious to know what exactly you are talking about here? Because normally you just outsource the "heavy stuff" to some remote API, service, etc. you can write in a hyper efficient language anyway.

kossTKR··on Developing a Modern Full-Stack Application: Choosing the Right Tech Stack
This sounds weird to me. What kind of scale / traffic did you have? Must be incredible read write heavy with millions of users?

I'm saying this because i myself have, and lots i know, have launched production sites with 100s of thousands of users on ready-made stacks like, Laravel, Rails, Flask (Php, Ruby, Python). But it's my impression that these fall short on millions of users and enormous concurrent traffic, but then you're already at huge evaluation, years into your project, or have 200+ positions, ie. you've already refactored your project multiple times.

kossTKR··on LLMs use a surprisingly simple mechanism to retrieve some stored knowledge
Interesting. Reminds me of a sci-fi short i read years ago where AI's "went insane" when they had too much knowledge because they'd spent too much time looking through data and get a buffer overflow.

I know some of the smaller models like PHI-2 are training for reasoning specifically before by training on question answer sets, though this seems like the opposite to me.

kossTKR··on Never forget that utterly ridiculous Pepsi logo design document (2023)
Not to pedestalize tech workers, but in my view we are still closer to say a carpenter, we accomplish things, make things, and the great ones also have an ethos, an aesthetic etc. as a bonus. Just like a great carpenter can also built a beautiful home.

The problem is the huge amount of people educated or nepo babied into positions with no actual foundation of "work", only fluffy business PDF's, design docs, leadership philosophy and endless workshop with no connection to the actual product, the actual user or the market, instead they float around in high society and write talk in endless streams of consciousness and do performance arts and rituals essentially.

kossTKR··on Never forget that utterly ridiculous Pepsi logo design document (2023)
Exactly, i actually thought they'd changed it back but no, still overweight man belly: https://ogden_images.s3.amazonaws.com/www.utne.com/images/20...

One of the worst logo's in a long time, the font is also garbage.

kossTKR··on My Apple Vision Pro Nightmare
The point is not the motion sickness but the eventual solipsism, isolation and panopticon of a world where everyone will "not even see you", maybe even block you visually and auditorially, and everything you see or do i scanned by "the machine".

I still want one but i see a very lonely future if this becomes widespread, especially coupled with AI agents.

kossTKR··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
It seems traffic has stopped in the last moments before the hit?

Also looks like it's emergency vehicles in standstill that are falling, i can't discern any moving cars at collapse?

kossTKR··on Canva has acquired Affinity in an effort to compete with Adobe
Even worse many apps now push "Monthly payments (payed yearly)", like some scammy car salesman.

You can try for 7 days, then don't worry we'll charge for 12 months.

Ridiculous for solo devs, full stack, creatives with lots of apps etc.

I use several apps a bit here and there throughout the year but that's seemingly not a usecase for these companies, you're either "in" 365 or won't be able to use the app.

kossTKR··on Real-time map of every Starlink satellite in orbit
Why did many telecom companies put their offices in the City of London?

Taxes, US regulation, military shenanigans?

kossTKR··on GPT-4, without specialized training, beat a GPT-3.5 class model that cost $10M
How narrow is the dataset to be outperforming greatly?

Just curious about what the usecase is for a 7b model in a business context - ie. what does it do?

kossTKR··on Game of Life, simulating itself, infinitely zoomable
Seems most likely, but why is there anything at all to begin with?

.. a feeling deep in the pit of my stomach.

Does anyone else sometimes get these "intuitive flashes of insight" - like your brain configures itself in a pattern that "lifts the veil".

I've been thinking of starting meditating to stabilise or cultivate this state if possible because i've feel like i've been losing this slightly psychedelic ability since i was a kid.

Most often i get it in the hypno/hypopompic phases, sudden flashes of eureka that disappears just as fast, like a loud echo of "wow this is existance", "time is unbelievably deep", "demensions and perspective are bizarre in essence", "is this just a fraction of a shared dream" etc.

kossTKR··on Study puts fermented foods, not fire, as pivotal moment in human brain growth
It's not just as simple as "probably just meat". Of course meat is important but i'd say in light of recent research fermentation and gut flora related concepts would be a better guess.

Cutting edge research into the Gut Biome shows its overlooked significance, connected to pre and probiotics and food, but also mental health, even going as far as questioning how much of "us" are really the gut biome.

People can heal various ailments even mental disease by getting transplants, it's a completely new and wild field of study, and holds much more weight than say eating or not eating meat.

kossTKR··on Thoughts on the Future of Software Development
Interesting, i also like the "scheming" phase, but also very much the optimisation phase.

I completely agree that tooling, dependencies and syntax / framework github issue labyrinths have become too much and GPT-4 already alleviates some of that but i wonder if the scheming phase will get eaten too very soon from just a few sentences of business proposal - who knows.

kossTKR··on Thoughts on the Future of Software Development
If you dislike writing code were you pushed into this field by family, education or because of money?

Because not liking code and being a dev is absolutely bizarre to me.

One of the most amazing things about being able to "develop" in my view is exactly in those rare moments where you just code away, time flies, you fix things, iterate, organise your project completely in the zone - just like when i design, paint or play music, do sports uninterrupted, it's that flow state.

In principle i like the social aspects but often they are the shitty part because of business politics, hierarchy games or bureaucracy.

What part of the job do you like then?

kossTKR··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
But that just makes it a bigger success right? Adjusting for the crazy price it's even more impressive if it sells almost 1/8 in the first year.

My impression is that it's going to fall in price in the next iterations though i agree with you right now it's not even targeted for the masses.

kossTKR··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
Interesting. Macrumors reports 200.000 sold vision pro's a few month's ago. So maybe 300.000 today?

It's a type of gadget that hasn't become widely adopted yet and the usecases and killer features are almost non existent compared to the iPhones phonecalls + web browsing, music, videos, notes and many others.

Really hard to gauge what success means here, but if we say that in a year it will sell 500.000 units, that's 1/8 of the original iPhone, seems ok, or maybe not?

kossTKR··on Snapdragon X Elite Multi-Core Superiority Claims over Apple's M3 Were Right
Does Windows run natively on ARM + most of its software?

Do they have their own translation layers as fast as Rosetta 2?

Just curious as to how it works.

kossTKR··on A generalist AI agent for 3D virtual environments
I think you're right. But in my view it's an incredibly sad future. Imagine a class of kids where no one's best friends with eachother but their AI's, no ones gaming together, no one as connected or have to time for their human peers, instead spending all of their time with hyper ultra addictive and friendly AI's.

Extreme solipsism and loneliness in reality, maybe not experienced but in reality.

No one will have time for the chaotic and very human traits that is the essence of actual human existence instead craving the super engineered dopamine machines AI will become.

kossTKR··on Speedometer 3.0: A shared browser benchmark for web application responsiveness
Hopefully at some point actual click latency will be fixed in general after some dark decades.

Still incredible that a gameboy or an 80's computer with a CRT feels more responsive than most devices these days.

Bring back tactility. I'm convinced the choppiness and weird waits are actually psychologically stressing us out. That's why good keyboards + old low latency OS'es or typewriters are so soothing to use.

kossTKR··on Meta outage
Cloudflare also having issues as of 1 hour ago:

https://www.cloudflarestatus.com

I wonder if it's connected to this. Seems like most large players are having issues now.

kossTKR··on Meta outage
What are the chances this is GPT-5 that has escaped and gone rogue?

Jest aside, i wonder when/if stuff like that will actually happen.
