korroziya··on Future Fords could repossess themselves and drive away if you miss payments
This but unironically.
korroziya··on Rare insect found at Arkansas Walmart
I assure you, entomologists have done more to help insect welfare than you ever will.
korroziya··on AI Tool Reveals How Celebrities’ Faces Have Been Photoshopped
This might come as a shock to you but women overwhelmingly outnumber men in using photoshop to augment their faces/bodies.
korroziya··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
>“Shockingly tiny” fraction of our planet’s mammal mass is wild species

How is this shocking? It should be obvious. Who is shocked, the scientists or us uneducated peons?

It's bad enough when journalists inject marketing-level emotional words into news stories, now peer-reviewed academic journals have to stoop to this?

korroziya··on The history of writing tech
Sure but it looks like we're headed the other direction. There was already that HN thread about the AI chatbot used to paraphrase a letter following a university shooting: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34896009
korroziya··on The Camera-Shy Hoodie
It's still a very specific scenario.
korroziya··on Research: The Transformative Power of Sabbaticals
"Our 50 interviewees worked in a variety of private, public, and non-profit organizations from diverse sectors including consulting, design, finance, medicine, education, and technology..."

Honestly, Blue collar workers need a sabbatical just as badly and you will NEVER see this occur outside of some exceptional anectdote which I'm sure will be mentioned in a reply to this post.

korroziya··on Research: The Transformative Power of Sabbaticals
Try opening it in Brave. Works for me.
korroziya··on The gap between how old you are and how old you think you are
I figured this was going to be more about the Zoomers in their twenties who act like perpetual high school students. Did not expect to see the discrepancy between people with and without kids.
korroziya··on Games should have “optimise for streaming” option
>Magic: The Gathering Arena is a free-to-play digital collectible card game developed and published by Wizards of the Coast

More like "Free to play" if you're ok with getting creamed by people shoving cash into the game for packs and drafts. MTGA is as rigged as every other game is these days: power for money.

korroziya··on Ask Dang: What tools do you use for moderating HN?
[flagged]
korroziya··on You’re Not a Girlboss – You’re Just Trapped in an MLM Scheme (2020)
Criticizing the "girlboss" fad even a year ago would have been a bona-fide way to end up jobless and blacklisted. Glad to see a few people are finally using the term for what it deserves: a joke.
korroziya··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
Fuck you too buddy.
korroziya··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
If you study renewables at all, you’ll find that it’s not going to be a silver bullet.
korroziya··on Stanford faculty say anonymous student bias reports threaten free speech
I understand how Stanford is a proper univeristy, but given how the college industry as a whole has done nothing but abuse students with predatory tactics aimed to squeeze every last drop of money out of them, I'm hard-pressed to shed a tear for professors. Not their fault per se, but still.
korroziya··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
>That seems self contradictory as you're telling us this via a social network

HN does not equal TikTok. You don't have an actual argument, you're just buttmad because you don't like the fact that I'm correct.

korroziya··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
I love how as soon as a technology appears which will allow us to keep using a cheap, dense, portable, reliable form of energy, the left-wing zealots come out of the woodwork to bitch and moan because it goes against their narrative and special interests.
korroziya··on Conversational AI will be used to Manipulate Us in real-time
As bad as the later seasons of Westworld are, the one part where Aaron Paul's character gets a rejection phonecall from a job "recruiter" was a real prime example warning of this sort of thing.

He asked the recruiter if there was anything he could do to be a better fit for the job. But the AI recruiter was designed to let him down easy about being not good enough. Not to help him improve. "Just tell me, are you a real person?"

korroziya··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
Fossil fuels provide us with cheap energy and the drawback (C02 emmissions) can be dealt with via carbon sequestration.

Social media is alcohol for narcissists. It provides very little utility or value, and the drawbacks (depression, FOMO, etc) far outweigh any "benefit".

Don't compare apples and oranges.

korroziya··on Humans Could Go the Way of the Dinosaur
Backtracking? Because the reply was 100% innacurate? Get lost.
korroziya··on What I did not learn about writing in school
Paraphrasing is hardly a literary crime but yes.
korroziya··on What I did not learn about writing in school
I agree with most of the points but I will say (as someone who writes for a living) that it is "easy" once you've learned how to do it. Writing is hard as hell if you don't know the rules past high-school level requirements.

Case-in-point: several of my non-work friends are ESL and some of them are taking technical writing courses. I've seen their assignments and have given them copyediting help. They're shocked that I can carve out the assignment in five minutes. Usually their problem is the first rule from Strunk and White: use less words.

korroziya··on Humans Could Go the Way of the Dinosaur
That's not the original post's argument and was not my response. Sanctimonious criticizing of the environmental effects of industrialization via sarcasm is absolutely a left-wing progressive thing. It's not clever, it's not cute, and it's not effective at arguing in favor of conservation.
korroziya··on Humans Could Go the Way of the Dinosaur
More progressive propaganda thinly packaged as journalism. Humans are animals, and nature has selected us to survive again and again. For crying outloud, we've made it to outer space, one of the most hostile environments for life forms, and we're pushing to go further.

The spread of the "humans suck, we're so awful" rhetoric in the left-wing media really puts a bad taste in my mouth.

korroziya··on Humans Could Go the Way of the Dinosaur
This but unironically. Spare me your left-wing progressive snark. Humans thrive despite our propensity for self-harm. Something to celebrate, not criticize.
korroziya··on Whistleblowers take note: don’t trust cropping tools
Another reason why MS Paint is king.
korroziya··on The art of the shadow: How painters have gotten it wrong for centuries
Slightly misleading title, seeing as how a lot of them were getting it wrong on purpose.
korroziya··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
Sometimes I think that's the case, and sometimes I think the wrong crowd is rapidly becoming the only crowd.

It's legitimately everywhere. The spread of baseless conspiracy theories, belief in magic and the occult, flat earthers, etc. has measurably gotten worse, I want to recall a few HN articles about the topic.

korroziya··on Health concerns grow in East Palestine, Ohio, after train derailment
Train derailments are the latest conspiracy theory for tinfoil hats right now. I guess food processing plant fires fell out of vogue.

"nO oNe iS rEpOrTiNg aBoUt tHiS" cries the conspiracy theorist reporting about the incident using screencaps from news reports.

korroziya··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
I get fatigued when people at bars or parties try to preach at me about how alien life is obviously behind the UFOs and if I don't believe them I'm a "sheep". Same goes for the wave of girls who think they're witches because they bought Tarot cards off Amazon.

It's depressing how uneducated, gullible people think they're clever for having "super secret" info no one else has.
