korm··on Udemy to pay $4M to settle a case alleging it advertised fake discounts
Oh did I misunderstand? I read both the tweet and the complaint in the court case.
korm··on Udemy to pay $4M to settle a case alleging it advertised fake discounts
> Go to website > see 80% off > sign in to buy > no longer 80% off

That's a bait and switch, also illegal. This lawsuit however was for fake reference pricing. Clearly a scam and there's a good reason it's banned in much of the developed world, just like false advertising.

korm··on Lex Fridman Podcast #367 – Sam Altman
That link is fake, whoever downloads from there better compare checksums, because God knows what they may put in that APK.

The real website is vancedapp.com but the project is discontinued. Revanced on GitHub (only) is continuing development.

korm··on Routine vaccinations drop among U.S. kindergartners for the third year in a row
In this case it's not disagreement with one expert, or even a few. The vaccination schedule is based on a consensus of experts. Not only across organizations, like the CDC, AAP, FDA, but across nations too, more or less.

It's truly bizarre to _radically_ disagree, especially as a layperson.

korm··on Walmart, CVS face trial for homeopathic products next to real meds
I know it does, and that has been cited countless times by homeopathic studies. The problem is that you still need magic for it to have a biological effect.

They dismiss this criticism as undiscovered science, in much the same way fairies and leprechauns are undiscovered animals. They'll often cite quantum mechanics and even cosmology, the more esoteric the better, to try to shoehorn science into their beliefs.

korm··on Walmart, CVS face trial for homeopathic products next to real meds
That is a meta analysis conducted by homeopathic doctors, on studies done by some "homeopathic institutes" and other such associations.

It's curious how positive results only come from associates in an industry profiting from trying to convince you that their water, chemically indistinguishable from regular water, has magical healing properties through its memory of past events.

korm··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
It's one theory among many. The flip side is that autoimmune diseases are often triggered by pathogens (MS from EBV, diabetes from HEV, and more). Air travel and urbanization help pathogens spread. My understanding is that it's not yet clear which are beneficial and which are harmful, but there's ongoing research.
korm··on Ask HN: Why are there so few artificial sunlight or artificial window products?
Winter at high latitudes can be very depressing. I've built such light fixtures for my home in the UK because it can be gray for weeks on end, without a 15-minute window of sunlight.
korm··on Ask HN: Why are there so few artificial sunlight or artificial window products?
Very true, color rendering, or god forbid flicker, are the main culprits to me.

Over the last few years a ton of players have entered the film lighting space, with many offerings exceeding Arri's color rendering for far cheaper. Yuji LEDs or iFootage for example make some of the most accurate lights at 98+ cri.

The film industry will still go for Arris for other reasons, but at home we have lots of options nowadays.

Amazon listings will always claim ridiculous cri numbers, try to find a 3rd party measurement. https://indiecinemaacademy.com/complete-led-color-database-c....

korm··on Show HN: I built a fun video meeting app with 2D physics and proximity chat
Very creative. Is this HRTF-like spatial audio or are you just modulating volume based on proximity/walls?
korm··on Risk of myocarditis after the Covid-19 mRNA vaccination in the USA cohort study
This study is written by biased authors [1], and they're simply measuring the emergency calls for cardiovascular events in different age groups over time. They literally don't know if the affected individuals were even vaccinated or if they had covid.

We really can't infer that the risk from vaccination is higher from this study.

korm··on Why is front-end development so unstable? (2018)
Yes to both, and I can't say many projects followed a radically different approach, at least without good reason. Webpack and Redux for example are many times more common than something like Parcel or Jotai, so it's rare to encounter many of these alternatives in one project.
korm··on Why is front-end development so unstable? (2018)
I've used the same React tech as the basis for most projects for 6 years now. Webpack, Redux, Yarn, React Router, all still popular and maintained. We even used hooks for functional components since then, through the "recompose" library, so there wasn't a big paradigm shift for us.

Anyone who feels compelled to jump from one unproven state management library or bundler to another, in serious projects, is just not doing their due diligence.

korm··on The curious history of NovaMin toothpaste (2018)
Acids such as citric acid are also very safe, but definitely not in the context of brushing teeth as they dissolve enamel. There simply isn't enough safety data _in that context_ for dentists to start recommending EDTA vs regular fluoride toothpaste. In one in vitro study I found, EDTA is shown to cause erosion https://www.medigraphic.com/pdfs/odon/uo-2012/uoi121b.pdf so I'd say more studies are required.
korm··on The curious history of NovaMin toothpaste (2018)
I'll wait for more and longer term studies before I try it. Maybe it slowly erodes teeth, or destroys amalgam fillings since it's EDTA.
korm··on Vue.js 3
Which benchmarks? In the js-framework-benchmark Svelte is slower than Inferno or Ivi and only slightly faster than Preact or Vue. https://krausest.github.io/js-framework-benchmark/2020/table...

You may be aware but it's also important to note that everyone is trying to cheat these benchmarks so they don't mean much. The implementations aren't data driven and don't look much like how we'd write real world code. See the discussions here including the linked issues and PRs https://github.com/krausest/js-framework-benchmark/issues/77...

korm··on Firefox 75.0
This thread reminds me of a CTO that forced us to restructure our frontend to allow user friendly navigation from the address bar. The UX guy protested this but the CTO got his way.

We ran user test after user test and no matter how he tried to structure the test, no user touched the address bar. It was a total waste of time. The only good that came from this was doing user tests earlier in the process.

korm··on Disk Prices on Amazon
Just to add one more data point, I received a fake i7-8700k from Amazon UK, in addition to a couple other fake items over the years. Amazon is my last choice nowadays.

In case anyone's wondering, the fake i7 was some sort of Celeron with an i7 sticker on top - the real one is engraved/printed and has a different shape.

korm··on Effects of short-term fasting on cancer treatment
You are correct. HN is strangely disappointing when it comes to health and nutrition. Somehow science and evidence isn't as important as anecdotes and guru-talk. Here's a link backing up your claims, including how metabolism and the thyroid affects weight gain in the Related Links

korm··on Rust GUI ecosystem overview
Isn't the browser more bloated than Electron?
korm··on Motion smoothing is ruining cinema
MPEG does motion compensation for compression AFAIK, which is different to motion interpolation, which is what is being discussed.
korm··on Motion smoothing is ruining cinema
That's why I specifically referred to rotoscoping and compositing, not rendering. The artist has to edit frame by frame.
korm··on Motion smoothing is ruining cinema
What TV manufacturers are doing is unacceptable. It introduces strange artifacts and the motion looks very artificial compared to a native 60fps video. So it really doesn't solve anything.

The argument that it's the filmmakers' fault for using 24fps is flawed. What about animation? What about stop motion? Those may never be produced at a higher framerate. Movies with high VFX budgets will be much more expensive due to the additional frames when rotoscoping and compositing.

So if it is inferior and only makes sense for a subset of productions, why is it the default?

korm··on What’s New in ES2019
Can you imagine a modern SoundCloud, Spotify, Facebook, Airbnb or Slack without a build pipeline? There's nothing appealing about that.

It's nice and simple for small projects but let's not act like putting a script tag in HTML is some divine wisdom that newbies don't understand.

korm··on Quiet Hacker News (2017)
In the parent's example the reddit post blew up so presumably the people making and upvoting puns came from /r/all, not /r/space. This is why some subreddits have opted to exclude themselves from /r/all (which comes with other downsides).
korm··on Brave Improves Its Ad-Blocker Performance with New Engine in Rust

korm··on Refurbishing the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine
My Europicolla is almost 20 years old and going strong. Maintenance or replacing parts is simple, you can kit it out with all sorts of upgrades, and its espresso is comparable to that of super expensive pressure profiling machines. It's my favorite thing I've ever bought.
korm··on The State of CSS 2019
The comment you replied to points out that "main" can be inside a div according to the spec.

Also, React doesn't require the wrappers.

korm··on You probably don’t need ReCAPTCHA
