kopo··on Ask HN: What would you work on without internet access?
You can find versions that are 50GB if you dig around the kiwix download page! The entire stackoverflow dump is around the same size.
kopo··on The high-return activity of raising others' aspirations
We don't really need a lot of the leadership positions we currently have. Hierarchies are possible/required when networks aren't fully connected up. As an extreme example to convey the point, Genghis Khan and Napolean play a huge role when the world is disconnected. But today the world is hyperconnected, so what does society do with its Genghis Khan characters? These people are busy trying to assert their innate Genghis-ness (see Mark Zuckerberg) but the network is so much more massive it will steamroll them sooner or later. Whats important in hyperconnected networks is consensus on direction. We are going through a transition from hierarchy to a fully connected network and we still have too many self deluding/self important characters trying to resist that.
kopo··on Ask HN: What would you work on without internet access?
Check out kiwix or zeal. Allows reading entire archives of wikipedia/stackoverflow/ted talks etc etc offline. Plus search. Throw in elasticsearch and you get really powerful customizable search. You can also create your own archive of web content. Given the size of modern harddrives people have no idea how much quality content can happily live on your local machine. No internet required.
kopo··on Silicon Valley is awash with Saudi Arabian money
Yeah...but maybe in the ideal world the addiction gets kicked and the drug dealer get rehabilitated. Isolation will probably create its own consequences.
kopo··on Saudi government reportedly punished dissidents after McKinsey identified them
Just glad to see someone within McKinsey has a conscience.
kopo··on Silicon Valley is awash with Saudi Arabian money
Well...all that Saudi oil money has to go somewhere and isn't it just better most of it flows into the US instead of China or Russia or wherever?

Wielding soft power doesn't have to be tightly coupled to it.

kopo··on Silicon Valley is awash with Saudi Arabian money
It doesn't make much sense. There are other journos who have died in custody or are still rotting away in custody.
kopo··on Not exercising worse than smoking, diabetes and heart disease study finds
Ya right. I work with politicians day to day. You have no idea how much society would benefit if they all died in their 60s.
kopo··on Not exercising worse than smoking, diabetes and heart disease study finds
The only problem I see with this kind of pitch is these days hospitals, docs and the pharma industry keep physically inactive people alive decades past their expiry date.
kopo··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
Also note, most adults are little kids.
kopo··on Bezos defends big tech co-operation with US military
What's missing is a Bezos level character on the other side of this debate laying out a vision where drone strikes and mass surveillance are not the only option for defense.
kopo··on Jeff Hawkins Is Finally Ready to Explain His Brain Research
Doesn't matter. What matters is whether the idea has engineering utility.

Jeff Hawkins is not a Biologist or a Neuroscientist (though he would probably qualify) trying to explain how the brain works. He is an Engineer using whatever bits he sees as potentially useful.

kopo··on A Map of Every Building in America
Interesting. Just wondering whats the size of the entire dataset download?
kopo··on Mathematicians confirm the possibility of data transfer via gravitational waves
What does "close to DC" mean?

And "end facets of the optical filter"? What is being thrown around?

kopo··on The Magic Leap Con
Also practical things like live conversation speech to text for deaf people. Pretty sure it will be cheaper than what gets spent on hearing aids.
kopo··on Are influencers overrated? New Study questions effectiveness of targeting “hubs”
Cool study. Ant hills don't have influencers. They are still able to run billion individual colonies. The more connected we get the more we resemble an ant hill imho in terms of info dispersion.

Feels like its also why news/journalist hubs aren't required as they once were. Other than for attention mining which seems like a unsustainable temporary glitch in the system.

kopo··on WhatsApp founder: I sold out, but I walked away from $850M when I quit FB
Just pointlessly trying to exist way past its date of expiry.

Facebook reminds me of Edison pushing his DC power distribution model on everyone. Telling the world nothing else will work. Trying to get them to build an Edison Power station every second block. Coasting on momentum built and wasting everyone's time. Spending huge resources buying out/maligning/litigating the competition. But it all fails. Few people ever needed DC power distribution. At the end of that story Edison says after a series of humilations in public and finally loosing control of his company "I have come to the conclusion that I never did know anything about Electricity".

That moment for Mr.Zuckerberg is fast approaching.

kopo··on Oil droplets guided by pilot waves do not give rise to double-slit interference
Do you know what the "basic math" said about electricity and magnetism before Faraday's experiments?
kopo··on After Journalist’s Alleged Murder, Tech Execs Distance Themselves from Saudis
With all that oil money do you really want them to be propping up the Russian or Chinese mil complex?
kopo··on Anti-social Punishment
I think communicating your do-gooder status in a hyper connected society is highly over rated. Its like trying to figure out who is the best ant in the ant-hill. Not because there is some value to it to the ant hill, but because the data allows us to count and rank things.

We have all this data pouring in and so have ant rankings. But if Bill Gates gets hit by a bus tomorrow world history isn't going to change much. Wasn't the case in a less connected world in the past.

kopo··on Delete Your Account Now: A Conversation with Jaron Lanier
I like Signal. They don't store much of anything. Code is open. A friend got me onto it by one day going cold turkey off all his other messaging apps. It works. I Have tried that on some of my family.

The number of weaknesses we have are huge. Anyone you see at the top of any hierarchy has usually mastered taking advantage of some of them.

Population wide effects MLK dreamed about too. Reality is a different story. I think the whole end goal is misguided and is going to lead to a whole lot of frustration and disappointment and divisiveness.

Helping individuals to overcome biology is much simpler than doing it at population scale.

kopo··on Building a speech recognition system for amateur radio communication
I have been reading a Micheal Faraday bio. It's such a great story. This guy had zero mathematical knowledge and just loved tinkering. And purely through hundreds and hundreds of experiments developed such an astounding intuition of how so many things worked. I am quite sure he would upvote your comment.
kopo··on Solving Tech Addiction Is an Underappreciated Market Opportunity
Good points. It feels like we are in some kind of "learning" phase, developing our ideas of what is useful and what is not. Who knows whether it will take 2 more years or 20 before the final verdict is delivered.
kopo··on Solving Tech Addiction Is an Underappreciated Market Opportunity
Buddhist thinking does give people narratives/rituals/methods to detach, that are without doubt of great value in today's hyperconnected world. And hyper connection does make us all vulnerable indeed.

But on the other end of the spectrum, Sugata Mitra, the educator, likes to say humanity has just uncovered the ability to murmurate like starlings, thanks to the hyperconnectivity the internet enable. It's still early days and pretty chaotic and mad, but just like a crowd has some magical self organizing ability to synchronize their clapping, who knows whether this hyper connectivity is on the verge of producing the same. I'd like to think we will get there, and are just going through a temporary bumping into each other phase. The talk for anyone interested - https://youtu.be/upg8LlJZtas?t=3567

kopo··on Leaked Transcript Contradicts Google’s Official Story on China
You need to use some imagination here.

They are clearly giving Google a list or a process to follow. Make them own it. Publish the rules and regulations and let the world and Chinese people see it. Let people also see what Microsoft or whoever else is happy to accept.

They aren't pulling these censored words and processes out of their ass. They have methods to decide what causes "social instability" or whatever. Just as pressure is mounting on Facebook Twitter and YouTube framing similar rules in an ivory tower, the pressure has mount on the Chinese too. Their own people will increasingly have things to say about it.

Everyone benefits if the process is pushed to be transparent esp now since the unintended consequences of big tech on society are becoming more and more clearer.
