kop316··on Libre Silicon – Free semiconductors for everyone
It looks neat, but the process node is 1 um with 3 metal layers.

The open Skywater PDK is 130 nm : https://github.com/google/skywater-pdk (though I don't know how reliable the PDK is?)

kop316··on The Paperweight Dilemma
The problem is up-streaming kernel patches shouldn't be a Mobian thing or a pmOS thing, it should be an entire community working together for it (and IMHO, Pine64 should be leading the part to making a healthy community and contributing to it). For at least the OG Pinephone, that community has more or less dried up. Many of the original folks that wanted to help moved on to other devices (or just left the community as a whole. The situation for upstreaming kernel patches hasn't changed in years, and I honestly don't see that situation changing as is.

I would recommend reading for some background:

https://drewdevault.com/2022/01/18/Pine64s-weird-priorities....

https://drewdevault.com/2022/08/18/PINE64-let-us-down.html

https://blog.brixit.nl/why-i-left-pine64/ (Pine64's response: https://www.pine64.org/2022/08/18/a-response-to-martijns-blo... )

Also, frankly, when we get a response like this: https://mastodon.social/@CounterPillow/110589778080526844 from a Pine64 developer when we worked to port over the PineTab2 to Mobian, it really doesn't make me want to work with them.

kop316··on Organic Maps: An open-source maps app that doesn't suck
I am assuming this is talking about Android, but for Mobile Linux, Pure Maps has been awesome: https://rinigus.github.io/pure-maps/

I have been successfully using it for over four months now for both car an bike navigation.

kop316··on Microsoft to kill off third-party printer drivers in Windows
For the record, printers have been so bad with firmware/software that it literally inspired RMS to make GNU: https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/201cthe-printer-story201...
kop316··on Covid is back on the rise across America
Purely anecdotal story, but I will share:

This week was the first time I have gotten COVID, and it hit me pretty hard. Admittedly I have not been especially careful in trying to prevent myself from getting it, so for a while I wondered if I only got it asymptomatically or if the vaccines (I got the OG one plus two boosters) were enough to not get a serious infection.

I sort of wonder if there was a mutation that has evaded the vaccines, and that is what is going around?

kop316··on Sorry, but Google Meet Is Better Than Zoom
Heh, I use Google Meet on a Weekly Basis in Firefox in Debian Stable. No issues here?
kop316··on [dead]
Since this is on the front page: "There won't be any further M1 packages on the 7.0 branch"

"If you want to run the developer preview for VBox on M1 you can check out the latest testbuilds which has a lot of fixes and enhancements for M1 "

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds

kop316··on Llama2.c: Inference llama 2 in one file of pure C
Yep! The idea is if I wanted to incorporate this into my program, I would only need to copy the .c/.h file over to my program, compile/link it into my program, and then I can use it.
kop316··on California wants to create a driver’s license for electric bikes
"The move is in response to many young electric bike riders who often take to the streets without having tested for or received a typical driver’s license for a standard car."

It sounds like the license would be required for anyone without a drivers license. Which, assuming the e-bike is operating on the road, is not that unreasonable.

kop316··on PinePhone Modem SDK
Nothing really. I think you have to do something to make sure USB audio is routed right (I think its in their wiki). Other than that, it would work just fine!
kop316··on Penguin T4 GNU/Linux Laptop
I do agree that thinkpenguin seems to want to have their cake and eat it too.

However, I think the claim that they can go after a website even if that website does not do business in Europe is entirely unreasonable.

kop316··on Penguin T4 GNU/Linux Laptop
FYI: https://gdpr.eu/companies-outside-of-europe/

> The GDPR does apply outside Europe

> Suppose you run a golf course in Manitoba focused exclusively on your local area, but sometimes people in France stumble across your site. Would you find yourself in the crosshairs of European regulators? It’s not likely. But technically you could be held accountable for tracking these data.

kop316··on Manjaro is a free and open source Linux operating system that emphasizes privacy
Yep: https://twitter.com/ManjaroLinux/status/1635741158700642304
kop316··on “Clickless” iOS exploits infect Kaspersky iPhones with never-before-seen malware
There's an entire section in the article titled: "Russia accuses Apple of colluding with the NSA". I would assume if the FSB isn't just blowing smoke, then your question is answered.
kop316··on ManyCam dishonored my lifetime license
Same here. I purchased it in 2013.
kop316··on Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default
Please do not use Manjaro. They are known to ship half baked WIP patches that cause massive breakages in their distro. Here is one of their latest instances: https://fosstodon.org/@alyssa@treehouse.systems/110049699665...

I personally have had them ship out WIP patches not meant for production, which has wasted a lot of my (volunteer) time chasing down phantom bugs in software I maintain. This has personally happened to me on at least four different occasions. A lot of other FOSS maintainers I know have similar stories.

More info: https://manjarno.snorlax.sh/

kop316··on MNT Pocket Reform open for orders
Economies of scale. It looks like they are targeting ~150 of them to ship ($135,000/$900 = 135). If I assume their non-recurring engineering costs is %50 of the price, that means the budget for designing/tooling/etc. is $67,500, which is actually much, much lower than I actually expected.

A Macbook on the other hand is targeting millions of devices. If we assume, let's say, a Macbooks budget for the same thing was $500M, selling only 10M puts the individual NRE cost to be $50.

kop316··on Hardware microphone disconnect (2021)
> situations where the mic isn’t on but the user doesn’t know why.

When I disable the Mic/Camera on my Librem 5, I have a notification on the screen that shows they are disabled. Same with my laptop. When I disable wifi, if I go to the notification area, it says "Disabled by hardware switch". So....there are ways to do this.

kop316··on Writing an OS in Rust to run on RISC-V
Xous, the OS that runs on the precursor, may be of interest to look at too:

https://github.com/betrusted-io/xous-core

It is written in Rust and is targeted for a RISC-V

kop316··on Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab
Agreed. @dang , does it make sense to change the link to: https://twitter.com/szeloof/status/1628528978884718592 ? The title is editorialized
kop316··on Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab
Ahh, thanks! This makes a bunch more sense.
kop316··on Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab
Thanks!
kop316··on Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab
> Atomic Semi's Twitter account follows only two people: Sam and Jim

I would hope that there is more concrete evidence (especially if that is the Headline!)

> retweeted this post from Sam: https://twitter.com/szeloof/status/1628528981430657026

Yeah I made mention of that. So it alludes to Sam being involved with it.

kop316··on Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab
From what I see, there is no mention of either Sam or Jim on the actual page: https://atomicsemi.com/

This tweet alludes to Sam being associated with Atomic Semi https://twitter.com/szeloof/status/1628528981430657026

And this twitter thread mentioned in the comments makes no mention of it: https://mobile.twitter.com/szeloof/status/154993704406717235... (Ctrl + F "Jim" or "Atomic" gets me zero hits)

Maybe I am dense, but where is Atomic Semi saying that it is being started by Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller, especially if the title is saying that (which I thought titles weren't supposed to be editorialized)?

kop316··on The Samsung Galaxy S23’s bloated Android build somehow uses 60GB of storage
> Their appliances (washer/dryer/etc) are notoriously unreliable

Yep. I am in a house that is all Sanmsung appliances. The Dishwasher's intake valve started leaking, the Oven's LCD panel broke and only showed garbled information, and the dryer's heating source broke. These were all appliances bought in 2019.

Thankfully, I was able to get replacement parts for the first two and fix easily enough, but there was no way to easily fix the dryer (I ended up getting a new dryer).

There is no way I would buy a Samsung Appliance again, and it frankly makes me question the quality of anything they make.

kop316··on Matrix.org homeserver: Severely degraded performance due to database issues
> most people didn't notice it

I am on a fair amount of channels on matrix.org and can confirm, if it wasn't for this news article I would have never known.

On a sidenote, thank you for the work you all do!

kop316··on Use of ChatGPT generated text for posts on Stack Overflow is temporarily banned
The way I read it, ChatGPT acts as a force multiplier: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force_multiplication

Yes, there are terrible and incorrect answers, but adding ChatGPT allows this to happen at a much higher rate than previously. And it allows folks to put together coherent or correct sounding answers without knowing anything about the subject.

kop316··on Back to Android for the time being

kop316··on Back to Android for the time being
I really wish OP would try a distro other than Manjaro. But since they are, frankly, I am not at all surprised at stability issues. I do not think I have seen any of these issues on a non-Manjaro distro. For some more context:

https://drewdevault.com/2022/01/18/Pine64s-weird-priorities.... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32495274

Manjaro consistently applies incomplete and WIP patches into their builds, causing that sort of instability. Every time I have had a strange issue filed in a program I maintain, it has been traced back to Manjaro doing something like that.

kop316··on Ask HN: Why do people come to HN for Stripe resolutions?
So I looked into that, and their Discord explicitly says not to use it for support. So I am confused?
